We investigated the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with mortality in patients with breast and prostate cancer. Breast and prostate cancer cohorts were created retrospectively using the SEER-Medicare database. Patients with first primary breast or prostate cancer diagnosed in 2008-2019 were identified using ICD-O-3 site and histology codes. Among those, patients with MetS were identified using ICD-9/10-CM codes, CPT/HCPCS codes, and prescription drug use from Medicare claims files. We defined continuous enrollment from 12 months before through 12 months after diagnosis, exposure during the first 12 months after diagnosis, and survival follow-up starting 12 months after diagnosis. We used multivariable …

Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia may harbor dysplasia or progress to oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), yet visual inspection alone is unreliable for risk assessment. Cytology offers a minimally invasive adjunct, but conventional approaches depend on manual feature extraction and subjective review. Herein we report a deep learning (DL) object detection model that directly classifies four cell phenotypes: differentiated squamous epithelial (DSE) cells, small round (SR) cells, leukocytes, and lone nuclei. The DL model produced cytology-derived parameters that correlated strongly with histopathologic diagnoses across 692 subjects with OPMDs, OSCC, and healthy controls, including declining DSE …

Climate change is reshaping coastal ecosystems through gradual warming and increasingly frequent extreme heat events, potentially affecting native and introduced species differently. We experimentally compared the native marine snail Littorina obtusata, a habitat and dietary specialist, to the introduced generalist Littorina littorea under sustained warming and short-term extreme heat. We measured survival and performance metrics, including grazing, growth, and attachment strength, under short- and long-term thermal stress in air and water. L. littorea consistently outperformed L. obtusata, maintaining or increasing function under warming and exhibiting greater survival during simulated heatwaves. Conversely, L. obtusata showed performance declines and higher …

An Automated Surrogate-Assisted Optimization Framework For Rapid Microfluidic Channel Design Of Point-Of-Care Diagnostic Devices, Ronald Jose, Yunjian Qiu, Lin Jiang, Yun Wang
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Saliva-based point-of-care diagnostic devices provide accessible, non-invasive health monitoring but face engineering challenges in ensuring reliable, cost-effective performance outside laboratory settings. Traditional design approaches rely heavily on repeated cycles of simulation, design, and prototyping, creating computational bottlenecks that slow innovation. This work introduces an automated surrogate-assisted optimization framework that integrates multiphysics simulation data, surrogate modeling, and multi-objective optimization to accelerate microchannel design. Synthetic datasets generated through multiphysics simulations are used to train a neural network surrogate model capable of predicting flow performance metrics, including the Dean number and pressure drop. This trained model achieved a mean squared error of 0.000012 …

From Literacy To Behavioral Intention: A Survey Of Soon-To-Graduate Students’ Intention To Use Generative Ai For Job Search Through The Technology Acceptance Model, Huai Yu Chen, Yu Chi
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
This study examines the factors associated with soon-to-graduate college students’ intention to use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the context of job searching, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). An online survey of US undergraduates expected to graduate within 12 months ( N = 300) showed that GenAI literacy significantly predicted perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Findings from PROCESS Model 6 indicated an indirect association between GenAI literacy and intention to use through perceived usefulness. Relative weight analysis revealed creative application as the strongest contributor to intention to use and perceived usefulness, while communication proficiency most strongly …

In this GCEL holdover proceeding, landlord claimed the small landlord exemption under RPL §214(1) and served a 90-day no-grounds termination notice (RPL §231-c). The petition alleged the apartment was not subject to rent control or stabilization. Tenant moved pursuant to CPLR 3211(a)(7) to dismiss for failure to state a cause of action, arguing landlord failed to incorporate the required small landlord ownership information into the GCEL notice accompanying the predicate notice. The court granted dismissal, holding that failure to include small landlord ownership information in the GCEL notice is a fatal defect and that the predicate notice is unamendable. Landlord's …

Court grants respondent-occupant's motion to vacate pro se stipulation of settlement in which he agreed to pay rent arrears and a money judgment he did not owe, as he is not the tenant of record. Court holds stipulation is not enforceable against respondent who was not a tenant and had no obligation to pay rent. Respondent had no obligation to pay rent until a proper lease is executed in his name. Leave granted to interpose amended answer asserting succession claim.

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court declined to strike the tenant's reply papers after the landlord moved to dismiss the petition on only one day's notice. Exercising its discretion under CPLR 2214(b) and CPLR 406, the court allowed the reply papers, finding that limiting litigants to half-arguments would not serve the goal of a just, speedy, and inexpensive determination of proceedings under CPLR 104.

Extending Premerger Notification To Labor Markets, Eric A. Posner, Elena Prager
Extending Premerger Notification To Labor Markets, Eric A. Posner, Elena Prager
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
US antitrust law requires mergers above a certain size to be reported to the federal antitrust agencies for review prior to consummation. For decades, this premerger notification process and subsequent merger review focused nearly exclusively on product markets. In the last few years, the agencies have also begun to challenge mergers on their effects on labor markets. But the agencies’ ability to detect potential labor market harms is hampered by an absence of labor market information at the premerger notification stage. This article proposes specific types of information that the agencies could collect about labor markets in order to put …

De La Asimilación A La Resistencia: Subjetividades Queer En La Cultura Española Contemporánea, Daniel Lino Plata
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation explores the continuum between assimilation and resistance in LGBTQ+ Spanish works of the last two decades. Through the analysis of autobiographical narratives, songs and music videos, novels, and films, I argue that in contemporary Spanish culture, queer and LGBTQ+ subjectivities appear as complex spaces of negotiation between normativity, assimilation, resistance, and transformation. In this sense, the objects of study challenge the idea that LGBTQ+ identities are necessarily or inherently subversive. Instead, they show how queer subjects can both question dominant structures and, at times, reproduce or desire heteronormative models related to gender, sexuality, family, class, respectability, national identity, …

Machine learning has substantially improved consumer credit-risk prediction, yet its deployment in lending decisionsraises persistent concerns regarding demographic fairness, financial exclusion, explainability, and regulatory defensibility. Thisstudy develops and empirically evaluates a Fairness-Aware Credit Intelligence (FACI) framework — a four-layer architectureintegrating predictive modeling, in- and post-processing fairness intervention, explainability and human policy override, andportfolio-level simulation and governance — using loan-level data from 412,683 consumer lending applications spanning 2021–2026. The study compares a traditional credit scorecard, gradient boosting and deep neural network models, two single-constraint fairness-aware models (demographic parity and equal opportunity), and the integrated FACI framework acrosspredictive accuracy (AUC-ROC), approval rates, …

Capturing An Electron In The Virtual State, Alok Nath Singh, Bibek Bhandari, Rafael Sánchez, Andrew N. Jordan
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We address a foundational question in quantum mechanics: can a particle be directly found in a classically-forbidden virtual state? We instantiate this conceptual question by investigating the traversal of electrons through a tunnel barrier, which we define in a triple quantum dot system where the occupation of the central dot is energetically avoided. The motivation behind this setup is to answer whether the central dot is occupied or not during a virtual transition when it is being explicitly monitored. We investigate this problem in two different limits of continuous measurements: the stochastic quantum diffusion and the quantum jump. We find …

Taxing Ai In The Wake Of The Emergence Of Agentic Ai, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Herbert Snitz
Articles
This article addresses taxation measures to regulate AI agents (i.e., AI that is not fully under the control of humans, including both ANI and AGI). In each case, the focus is on what the agent’s capabilities would be, not on how it becomes capable of successfully performing its tasks (though the latter would likely be relevant to important philosophical questions, e.g., might robots achieve sentience or consciousness, and if so, would they have rights?). Regarding mirroring what we human beings can do, the hallmark of AGI is that it will not be task-specific (like ANI), but will possess broad capabilities, …

Gastric cancer remains a major global health burden, ranking fifth worldwide in both incidence and mortality. While Helicobacter pylori is a well-established Group I carcinogen, increasing evidence suggests that non-H. pylori bacteria, including Streptococcus anginosus, may also contribute to gastric carcinogenesis. However, their comparative pathogenic roles and interactions remain poorly defined. In this study, public databases showed stage-dependent abundance changes of H. pylori and S. anginosus but no significant correlation during gastric cancer progression. We further quantified both bacteria in gastric fluid samples collected from 500 individuals using a non-invasive gastric string test and in fecal samples from an independent …

Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is widely acknowledged as essential in software engineering (SE), yet day-to-day integration into teaching remains uncommon due to time pressures, low instructor confidence, and fragmented resources. We present GenEDIt, a purpose-built, LLM-backed chatbot that helps educators weave EDI into SE education artefacts without altering intended learning outcomes. Unlike generic chat interfaces, GenEDIt provides a tailored UI and workflow, and embeds retrieval over a vetted EDI knowledge base. The tool supports five educator-centred modes - (1) methods for integrating EDI into current activities; (2) examples/datasets; (3) EDI-integrated assessments and rubrics; (4) reflective prompts; and (5) rapid …

Gastrointestinal perforation in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is uncommon but potentially fatal, and attribution is clinically consequential because perforation may reflect lupus enteritis with mesenteric vasculitis, infection, diverticular or stercoral disease, malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), medication-related injury, or a combination of mechanisms. Corticosteroid-associated perforation is therefore best treated as a diagnosis of exclusion rather than as an isolated novel observation. We report a 62-year-old woman with SLE who developed sudden severe right-sided abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, leukocytosis, lactic acidosis, and radiographic pneumoperitoneum while tapering prednisone from 60 mg/day to 10 mg/day over three months, with 10 mg/day documented at …

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) rarely presents as cervical lymph node metastasis without an identifiable intrathyroidal primary despite exhaustive imaging and histopathologic evaluation, representing the rarest form of occult thyroid carcinoma and posing distinct diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a 27-year-old man who presented with a cystic lateral neck mass. Fine-needle aspiration confirmed metastatic PTC, yet ultrasonography, computed tomography, and positron emission tomography/computed tomography demonstrated no thyroid abnormality. Total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection revealed metastatic PTC in two of the 21 lymph nodes (pN1b) without extranodal extension, while exhaustive sectioning of the thyroid demonstrated only chronic inflammatory changes …

Nurses’ Knowledge And Practices Regarding Infection Prevention Measures In Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Marwa G. Abouheiba, Maha Adel Salem, Jean Bertin Mudenge
Nursing
Abstract: Background: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remain a major global patient safety challenge, contributing substantially to morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospitalization, antimicrobial resistance, and increased healthcare costs. Patients admitted to cardiac intensive care units (ICUs) are particularly vulnerable because of their critical illness, frequent exposure to invasive devices, and complex cardiovascular interventions. Nurses play a pivotal role in preventing HAIs through the consistent implementation of evidence-based infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. Therefore, assessing both nurses' knowledge and their observed clinical practices is essential for identifying strengths, potential gaps, and opportunities for quality improvement. Aim: To assess nurses' knowledge and observed practices …
