Long-Term Inactivation Mediated By Different Fgf-A Homologues On Heterologously Expressed Nav1.2 Currents, Yenisleidy Lorenzo-Ceballos, Pedro L Martinez-Espinosa, Xiao-Ming Xia, Christopher J Lingle

2020-Current year OA Pubs

A-isoforms of cytosolic growth factor homologous factors (FGF11-14) mediate long-term inactivation (LTI) of voltage-dependent sodium (NaV) channels. LTI is a rapid onset process that is competitive with the fast inactivation (IF) intrinsic to NaV channels, with little or no interconversion between inactivated states. Since recovery from LTI is orders of magnitude slower than recovery from IF, repetitive depolarizations lead to use-dependent accumulation of NaV channels in slow recovery states, thereby limiting NaV availability during trains of action potentials. Of the two or more N-terminal splice variants of the various FGF homologues, LTI specifically arises only from the A-isoform of each …

Emotionally Coherent Procedural World Generation: Environmental Psychology As A Generative Framework For Automated 3d World Construction, Michael D. Conduit Jul 2026

Emotionally Coherent Procedural World Generation: Environmental Psychology As A Generative Framework For Automated 3d World Construction, Michael D. Conduit

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a method and system for procedurally generating three-dimensional virtual environments whose spatial composition, asset placement, and atmospheric properties are driven by parameters derived from empirical environmental psychology research. The core innovation is the use of multi-dimensional emotional profile vectors — parameterised from validated human perception studies including prospect-refuge theory, vastness-awe research, and spatial density psychology — as the primary control surface for an automated world generation pipeline.

Unlike prior approaches that use aesthetic heuristics, noise-based randomness, or manual artist direction, the system described here encodes psychological research findings directly as generative constraints. The result is environments in …

In-File Stapled Freshness: Hash-Chain Validity Tokens Written Into A Frozen Self-Serialized Document Via A Length-Preserving Neutralized Zone, With Fail-Stale Offline Verification, Michael Benaudis Jul 2026

In-File Stapled Freshness: Hash-Chain Validity Tokens Written Into A Frozen Self-Serialized Document Via A Length-Preserving Neutralized Zone, With Fail-Stale Offline Verification, Michael Benaudis

Defensive Publications Series

Revocation of frozen offline credentials — single-file HTML documents, PDFs, or other self-serialized digital credentials verified without any network, server, or public-key infrastructure — is information-theoretically constrained: a file sealed at issuance cannot learn of a later revocation event unless some information reaches the verification context. This disclosure does not remove that channel; it reduces it to one short, public, unforgeable hash-chain token per validity period, relayable by any untrusted party, and relocates the freshness proof inside the credential file itself. At issuance, a hash-chain tip (Micali NOVOMODO style) and period parameters are embedded in the credential's signed core, attested …

Canonical Multi-Zone Neutralization For Self-Serialized Documents Carrying Heterogeneous Hybrid Signatures, A Self-Referential Integrity Digest, And A Post-Signing Timestamp Anchor, Michael Benaudis Jul 2026

Canonical Multi-Zone Neutralization For Self-Serialized Documents Carrying Heterogeneous Hybrid Signatures, A Self-Referential Integrity Digest, And A Post-Signing Timestamp Anchor, Michael Benaudis

Defensive Publications Series

A self-serialized digital document — a single HTML file, PDF, or archive — sometimes must embed, within its own byte stream, three mutually dependent cryptographic elements: a hybrid digital signature combining a classical algorithm (ECDSA P-256) with a post-quantum algorithm (ML-DSA-65, FIPS 204); a self-referential SHA-256 integrity digest computed over the document's own serialization; and a blockchain timestamp anchor reference (Bitcoin, Ethereum) whose value becomes known only after the document has been hashed and submitted for anchoring. Embedding all three inside one serialized body creates a circular dependency that naive ordering cannot resolve: signatures must cover content that sits next …

Proportional Transmit Power Allocation Based On Channel Quality In Multi‑Antenna Systems, Sangwook Suh, Scott Huang, Ayrton Chen, Guosen Yue, Han Kim, Taeyoon Kim, Cp Chiang, Peng Wu, Insoo Hwang Jul 2026

Proportional Transmit Power Allocation Based On Channel Quality In Multi‑Antenna Systems, Sangwook Suh, Scott Huang, Ayrton Chen, Guosen Yue, Han Kim, Taeyoon Kim, Cp Chiang, Peng Wu, Insoo Hwang

Defensive Publications Series

In cellular networks, a user equipment device utilizing multiple transmit antennas might experience high block error rates when a gain imbalance exists between transmission paths. To handle multi-antenna transmissions, conventional approaches might allocate an equal amount of transmission power across available antennas. However, this equal allocation might expend energy on attenuated channels, lowering an overall signal-to-noise ratio at a receiving station.

A method is disclosed that assigns transmit power proportionally based on an evaluated channel quality for each antenna path. The method evaluates a reference signal received power for individual paths and directs a larger portion of transmission power to …

Persistent Driver Signatures For Software-Defined Vehicles, Sean C. Keys, Karsten Knese

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure describes a system that enables software-defined vehicles (SDVs), smart cars, or connected autonomous vehicles to adjust their advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) based on a persistent driver signature. The driver signature acts as a portable digital identity or user profile representing a driver’s unique physiological and behavioral tendencies, such as typical steering and braking patterns. Instead of storing raw data like video files, the system relies on a cloud database to store a secure mathematical model (a vector or tensor) that represents these individual habits. At the beginning of each trip, the SDV identifies the driver using a …

Automated Context-Aware In-Video Advertising Through Multimodal Generative Models, Lakshmi Venkatesh Kakumani Jul 2026

Automated Context-Aware In-Video Advertising Through Multimodal Generative Models, Lakshmi Venkatesh Kakumani

Defensive Publications Series

The disclosed technology employs an automated pipeline to dynamically insert context-aware digital advertisements into video streams. A vision-language model (VLM) processes decoded video frames to perform spatiotemporal affordance and obstacle detection, identifying semantic regions suitable for ad placement. If an existing object obstructs the placement area, a physics-aware preparation layer performs 3D semantic object translation. This object translation directly  morphs an existing unbranded scene object into a branded alternative while preserving the original scene physics and lighting. The system generates a joint multimodal embedding vector representing the immediate semantic and audio context of the video. This vector guides an image …

A Brief Summary Of Albert Camus’S “The Myth Of Sisyphus”, Irma Mosqueda Perez Jul 2026

A Brief Summary Of Albert Camus’S “The Myth Of Sisyphus”, Irma Mosqueda Perez

Philosophy - All Scholarship

In the first pages of The Myth of Sisyphus, Albert Camus chooses to discuss beliefs and values, before diving deep into his theory on absurdism. His purpose is to set the groundwork for his future ideas on the meaning or rather, the lack of meaning of life. So he begins, piece by piece assembling the big puzzle that ends in his theory of philosophical absurdism and continues with an evaluation of the central question of this book: is suicide a justified approach when facing life? In this essay I plan on doing an exposition of the main points of Camus’s …

Enhancing Construction Simulation Optimization Performance Through Variance Reduction Techniques, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad Jul 2026

Enhancing Construction Simulation Optimization Performance Through Variance Reduction Techniques, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad

College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers

Simulation optimization has been used to analyze construction operations and support planning decisions under uncertainty. It enables the identification of effective planning strategies throughout a project’s lifecycle. However, the use of stochastic simulation to evaluate alternative strategies results in higher computational demands and the generation of inferior solutions within the resulting optimal solutions. This study examines the feasibility of overcoming these issues by implementing variance reduction techniques into a discrete-event simulation optimization framework. Three variance reduction techniques are evaluated in a case study: Common Random Numbers, Antithetic Variates, and a combined application of both. While these techniques are well established …

Latency-Slo-Aware Memory Offloading For Large Language Model Inference, Chenxiang Ma, Hanyu Zhao, Zhisheng Ye, Zehua Yang, Tianhao Fu, Jiaxun Han, Jie Zhang, Yingwei Luo, Xiaolin Wang, Zhenlin Wang, Yong Li, Diyu Zhou

Michigan Tech Publications

Offloading large language models (LLMs) states to host memory during inference promises to reduce operational costs by supporting larger models, longer prompts, and larger batch sizes. However, the design of existing memory offloading mechanisms does not take latency service-level objectives (SLOs) into consideration. As a result, they either lead to frequent SLO violations or underutilize host memory, thereby incurring economic loss and thus defeating the purpose of memory offloading. This paper presents NovaServe, a latency-SLO-aware memory offloading system for LLM serving. A key challenge in designing NovaServe is to reconcile the tension between meeting SLOs and maximizing host memory usage. …

3d Semi-Analytical Thermo-Elasto-Plastic Model For Additive Manufacturing, Tao Liu, Ming C. Leu, Edward C. Kinzel, Chinedum Okwudire Jul 2026

3d Semi-Analytical Thermo-Elasto-Plastic Model For Additive Manufacturing, Tao Liu, Ming C. Leu, Edward C. Kinzel, Chinedum Okwudire

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In additive manufacturing (AM), stress field drives distortion and warping and promotes delamination and cracking. Fast, accurate stress prediction is therefore essential for AM process planning and control, including real-time adaptive control, AM digital twins, data-driven and physics-driven workflows. However, spot-wise thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method (FEM) are often too slow for design iteration or real time use. Existing semi-analytical thermo-elasto-plastic approaches achieve high speed but are largely limited to 2D. In this paper, a full 3D semi-analytical thermo-elasto-plastic model for AM is built. The method uses a spot-wise analytical thermal field as the load and computes displacements and stresses via …

School of Medicine Publications

Behaviors arise from coordinated neural activity across diverse spatial and temporal scales. Prior work has linked better task performance and cognitive functioning to patterns of global network connectivity requiring minimal reconfiguration when switching between task demands. This metric indexing similarity in functional connectivity across task and rest has been termed “neural efficiency.” Here we assess stability of neural efficiency over approximately 3 years in adolescence, specificity across two task-rest combinations and associations with anxiety. At approximately age 16 and/or 19, 95 participants completed a resting state scan alongside a cognitive control and/or threat task. Neural efficiency was quantified as partial …

Dynlp: Parallel Dynamic Batch Update For Label Propagation In Graph-Based Semi-Supervised Learning, S. M. Shovan, Arindam Khanda, S. M. Ferdous, Sajal K. Das, Mahantesh Halappanavar

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Semi-supervised learning aims to infer class labels using only a small fraction of labeled data. In graph-based semi-supervised learning, this is typically achieved through label propagation to predict labels of unlabeled nodes. However, in real-world applications, new data often arrives in batches, and stale data often becomes irrelevant. Each time a new batch appears, reapplying the traditional label propagation algorithm to recompute all labels is redundant, computationally intensive, and inefficient. To address the absence of an efficient label propagation update method, we propose DynLP, a novel GPU-centric Dynamic Batched Parallel Label Propagation algorithm that performs only the necessary updates, propagating …

Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis Jul 2026

Community Ai Resilience: A Five-Pillar Framework For Preparing Communities For An Ai-Transformed World, Robin D. Anderson, Nicholas A. Curtis

Faculty Scholarship

Current artificial intelligence readiness strategies focus almost exclusively on two priorities: expanding access to AI tools and developing a technical workforce. While necessary, these efforts are insufficient. AI seems likely to transform how people work and, with that, to reshape how individuals derive meaning, how families function, and how communities organize. This paper presents the Community AI Resilience Framework, a five-pillar model addressing the human systems dimensions of AI transformation: (1) Economic Resilience and Regulatory Adaptation; (2) Social Cohesion and Belonging Infrastructure; (3) Psychological Resilience and Identity Reconstruction; (4) Civic and Educational Renewal; and (5) Ecological and Leisure Commons Management. …

Recent Advancements In The Characterization Of Archaeological Wood, Amir Ghavidel, Reza Hosseinpourpia, Jianhui Zhou

Michigan Tech Publications

Archeological wood is a vital organic archive, yet its degraded state challenges traditional methods for species identification, provenance resolution, and decay assessment. This review synthesizes state-of-the-art advances—integrating artificial intelligence, isotopic systems, and molecular biology—and proposes a four-tier hierarchical diagnostic framework that moves the field from qualitative description to quantitative, high-resolution analysis. Landmark case studies demonstrate how multi-scalar data fusion provides mechanistic understanding of structural decay inaccessible through conventional approaches.

Beyond Step Counts: Dual Perspectives On Designing Interactive Technologies To Support Outdoor Movement In Older Adults, Fatima Badmos, Emma Murphy, Peterson Jean, Damon Berry

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Outdoor movement supports older adults' health and wellbeing, yet participation is constrained by environmental, physical, and social barriers. Existing technologies often prioritise clinical risk management and quantified functional metrics, and rarely integrate older adults' lived experience alongside physical activity experts' perspectives in early design. We conducted four focus group workshops with 24 urban dwelling older adults (63 to 91 years) and semi structured online interviews with 11 physical activity experts. Data were analysed using thematic analysis and grounded theory coding, then triangulated to identify convergent themes, divergent perspectives, and complementary views. Key tensions concerned risk management versus independence, clinical benchmarks …

Michigan Tech Publications

The engineering of durable small-diameter vascular grafts remains constrained by the challenge of simultaneously achieving mechanical robustness, controlled degradation, and instructive scaffold architecture. Here, we report a programmable dual-crosslinked metallo-elastomer platform, poly(1,3-propylene itaconate-co-2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-dicarboxylate-co-succinate-co-sebacate) (M-PBIS), that integrates dynamic metal–ligand coordination with covalent crosslinking to enable orthogonal control over network mechanics, time-dependent viscoelastic behavior, and processability. PBIS polymers were synthesized by modular step-growth polyesterification, allowing independent tuning of backbone composition, bipyridine ligand density for metal coordination, and alkene (C = C) content for covalent crosslinking. This multidimensional design space allowed systematic tuning of tensile elastic modulus (0.06–3.2 MPa), extensibility (53%–491%), toughness (66–1339 …
