Extrafloral Nectaries In Woody Plants: Toward An Integrated Framework For Ant-Mediated Plant Defense, Fangming Liu, Qifei Cai, Victor Busov, Zhen Liu

Michigan Tech Publications

Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs)-secretory structures that recruit predatory arthropods as indirect defenders against herbivory-have been studied almost exclusively in herbaceous systems, leaving a critical gap in our understanding of plant defense in woody plants. In trees, secondary growth, ontogenetic regulation, and seasonal phenology generate structural and temporal heterogeneity in EFN expression poorly captured by existing frameworks. We synthesize evidence across structural, chemical, and functional dimensions of EFN biology to develop an integrated framework for perennial trees. Our analysis suggests that methodological limitations in EFN detection likely bias the current chemical record of woody EFNs, while incomplete chemical characterization constrains the evaluation …

In this non-primary residence holdover proceeding involving a rent-stabilized unit, landlord moved for discovery of records relevant to tenants' primary residence and succession claims. The court granted the motion in part, applying the presumption of liberal disclosure in housing court proceedings and finding that the requested discovery was relevant to the pending non-primary residence and succession issues.

SARS-CoV-2 transmission has declined, yet ongoing viral evolution continues to pose public health challenges. This study conducted long-term (2020-2024) genomic surveillance within a large and globally diverse university community. Viral genomes obtained from clinical (n = 1,786) and surveillance (n = 888) testing samples were classified under clade, lineage, and variant systems, and compared with global genomic data sets. Local patterns broadly paralleled global evolutionary trends, including the phased emergence of major variants, episodic introductions of new lineages, and shifts in dominant clades. Lineage diversity peaked during fall semesters and was highest among undergraduate-aged individuals, with similar distributions …

Coherent Two-Photon Backscattering And Induced Angular Quantum Correlations In Multiple-Scattered Two-Photon States Of The Light, Nooshin M. Estakhri, Theodore B. Norris

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

We present the emergence of coherent two-photon backscattering, a manifestation of weak localization, in multiple scattering of maximally entangled pure and fully mixed two-photon states and examine the effect of entanglement and classical correlations. Quantum correlations in backscattering are investigated for finite three-dimensional disordered structures in the weak localization regime, as well as systems of a small number of scatterers with specified spatial arrangements. No assumptions are made about the statistical behavior of the scattering matrix elements. Furthermore, we study the interplay between quantum correlations induced by multiple scattering and the correlations that may be present in the illumination fields, …

BACKGROUND: Fetal and neonatal outcomes and factors increasing mortality risk in fetal truncus arteriosus are not well characterized. We aimed to examine the prenatally encountered cardiac spectrum, define extracardiac and genetic associations, explore clinical outcomes and identify prenatal factors associated with worse outcomes in a contemporary large cohort.

METHODS: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted via the Fetal Heart Society Research Collaborative including fetal truncus arteriosus cases encountered between January 1, 2010, and September 1, 2021, within 22 North American cardiac centers. Demographic, clinical, anatomic, and functional fetal echocardiographic variables were analyzed for associations with presurgical death (fetal death/neonatal …

Women Refugees & Immigrants: What Utahns Need To Know, Susan R. Madsen, Deborah Lin Jul 2026

Women Refugees & Immigrants: What Utahns Need To Know, Susan R. Madsen, Deborah Lin

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Refugee and immigrant women are an integral part of Utah’s communities, contributing as neighbors, workers, entrepreneurs, caregivers, and advocates. They enrich our state through their diverse perspectives, experiences, and talents. Utah has a long tradition of welcoming newcomers, and our communities are stronger when everyone has the opportunity to belong and contribute. At the same time, research shows that many of the challenges facing Utah women and girls disproportionately affect refugee and immigrant women. Understanding the experiences, needs, and contributions of these women is essential to fostering welcoming, supportive communities so that all Utah women and girls can thrive.

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Estimating the number of insect species on Earth is a daunting challenge. The current consensus estimate—about six million species—is likely far too low, as we will show. Our estimate of the global number of insect species rests on a sample of more than 1,600,000 DNA-barcoded insect specimens representing 53,945 species from 15 “core” Malaise traps deployed in dry forest, cloud forest, and rainforest ecosystems of the Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) in Costa Rica. Even this massive sample fails to reveal the full extent of ACG insect species richness. To estimate total ACG insect richness, we adjust the observed count …

Serial Drilling Technique For Sequential Subtrochanteric Femur Fracture Fixation In Pediatric Osteopetrosis: A Technical Report., Adam Mansour, Josiah J Wolf, Ivan Slyepkan, Morgan Turnow, Michael Anderson, Anthony Wing, Jack Iandoli, Craig Goubeaux, Craig Smith, Allen Kadado

Surgery Articles

Pediatric osteopetrosis presents a significant technical challenge for fracture fixation due to the bone's dense yet brittle nature and frequently absent medullary canal. Traditional drilling methods risk excessive torque, drill-bit breakage, and iatrogenic fractures. Here, we describe a serial drilling technique for plate-and-screw fixation in a 5-year-old child with osteopetrosis who sustained sequential subtrochanteric femur fractures 8 months apart. By creating a small pilot hole, sequentially enlarging it with intermediate bits under copious irrigation, and inserting locking screws manually, we achieved stable fixation with no observed instrument failure or intraoperative complications. This method may provide a practical technical strategy for …

OhioHealth Research Institute Articles

BACKGROUND: Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is recognized as a key intervention in reducing morbidity among patients with multiple displaced rib fractures or flail chest. Early SSRF, typically within 72 hours of admission, has been associated with improved outcomes. The factors contributing to delayed stabilization, defined as 72 hours or greater following admission, remain unclear.

METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed, evaluating 492 trauma patients who underwent SSRF at a level II trauma center. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and associated injuries were analyzed to identify factors associated with delayed SSRF. Groups were defined as early (≤72 hours) and …

Project Renewal, Inc. V. Blake

All Decisions

In this licensee holdover involving an OMH-regulated supportive housing community residence, landlord served a Notice to Quit based on tenant's discharge from the program, then subsequently executed a new Occupancy Fee Agreement with tenant. The court dismissed because landlord's execution of a new agreement after service of the predicate notice vitiated the Notice to Quit, rendering it a nullity. A landlord who renews an occupancy agreement after service of a termination notice cannot thereafter rely upon the prior notice as the basis for a summary proceeding.

The onset of epilepsy in adulthood occurs most commonly after 55 years of age. Given the ageing global population, this disorder represents an increasing burden on healthcare and society. The bidirectional link between epilepsy and dementia is a focus of intense research with underlying tau pathology highlighted as a potential mechanistic link. In this review, we examine the evidence for tau-related neurodegenerative processes in epilepsy beginning with how changes in biochemical and structural properties of the tau protein can lead to abnormal phosphorylation and pathological aggregation. We consider the role of tau in seizure occurrence and cognitive difficulties in experimental …
