Enhanced Mobilenet With Multi-Scale Feature Fusion For Automated Breast Cancer Histopathology Classification, Amany M. Abdo Prof.

Information Systems

Accurate and efficient diagnosis of breast cancer from histopathological images remains a major challenge in clinical practice due to subjective interpretation, inter-observer variability, and labor-intensive manual examination. To address these limitations, this work introduces a transfer learning–based framework for automated breast cancer classification using the Breast Cancer Histology Images (BACH) dataset. Several pre-trained deep architectures—including MobileNet, ResNet variants, EfficientNet, and Vision Transformers—were evaluated and extended with a Multi-Scale Feature Fusion (MSFF) module to capture morphological heterogeneity across spatial resolutions. Among these, the Enhanced MobileNet (E‑MobileNet) with MSFF outperforming recent state‑of‑the‑art models and achieving a classification accuracy of 95%, precision of …

Abstract: We investigated the prophylactic effects of exercise before and during cancer cachexia (CC) using a model designed to mimic endurance and resistance (i.e., concurrent) adaptations. Male and female Balb/c mice were randomly assigned to exercise or control groups whereby exercise groups were subjected to an 8-week voluntary progressive weighted wheel running (PoWeR) programme of habitual loading-mediated physical activity beginning at 8 weeks of age. At 16 weeks of age, mice were injected bilaterally with colon-26 adenocarcinoma (C26) cells or phosphate-buffered saline, and exercise training was maintained throughout disease progression. Twenty-five days post-tumour induction, we assessed whole-body and muscle phenotype, …

Climate Change, Governance Failure, And Violent Insurgency In Cabo Delgado, Hala Thabet Jul 2026

Climate Change, Governance Failure, And Violent Insurgency In Cabo Delgado, Hala Thabet

All Works

Contemporary literature increasingly links rising levels of armed violence in several African countries to the repercussions of climate change, particularly long-term environmental stresses such as the deterioration of agricultural livelihoods, resource scarcity, and recurrent climate shocks. However, this study argues that the relationship between climate change and violence is not an inevitable causal one, but can be understood as the result of the intersection of the failure of the post-independence nation-building project and the impacts of climate change on livelihoods and economic security. In Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, repeated climate shocks and the resulting deterioration of coastal agriculture and …

BACKGROUNDSepsis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in critically ill children, yet heterogeneous immune responses complicate the development of targeted therapies and the host immune factors driving sepsis pathobiology remain unclear.METHODSWe integrated deep immune phenotyping, plasma proteomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and phosphoflow cytometry in a prospective cohort of 88 critically ill children to elucidate the mechanisms underlying immune heterogeneity.RESULTSUnsupervised clustering of plasma cytokines identified 3 immunologic subgroups, including a high-severity group ("Group C") characterized by hypercytokinemia driven by IL-6 and IFN-γ. Group C exhibited distinct alterations in immune cell frequency and activation, with a strong association between hyperinflammatory cytokine …

The Tagmatized Echinoderm, Richard L. Turner Jul 2026

The Tagmatized Echinoderm, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Synopsis Tagmosis is a derived condition of metamerism in annelids, arthropods, and chordates in which groups of adjacent segments are modified to perform specific functions. Examples are the clitellum of earthworms, the carapace of lobsters, and the sacrum of tetrapods, to mention a few. The argument is advanced here that examples of tagmosis are not hard to find among echinoderms, a fourth major group of metameric animals; but the degree of tagmosis is weak in most cases. The first few segments of the axial skeleton are often conjoined as a perioral tagma (e.g., the jaws and other parts of the …

Bar-And-Hinge Model For Elasto-Plastic Origami Analysis, Yansong Tang, Yeqi Chu, Yue Mei, Yi Zhu, Ke Liu

Michigan Tech Publications

Origami-inspired structures are attracting considerable attention in engineering owing to their ability to facilitate intricate deformations and deployable configurations. However, accurately simulating their mechanical behaviour under realistic conditions involving permanent deformations and energy dissipation remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present an elasto-plastic formulation based on the nonlinear bar-and-hinge model for non-rigid origami simulation. We integrate rate-independent elasto-plastic constitutive models for both the hinges and the bars, enabling tunable representation of both elastic and plastic deformations in origami structures. The formulation employs a return mapping algorithm to ensure consistency with yield conditions checked at each incremental time step, …

Tau Seeds Induce Neurofibrillary Tangle Formation Across Brain Regions Via Individual-Specific Connectivity, Audrey J Weber, Bernard Ng, Kelsey M Greathouse, David A Bennett, Shinya Tasaki, Chris Gaiteri, Jeremy H Herskowitz

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The spread of tau pathology across the cerebral cortex is closely tied to cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD). To investigate mechanisms underlying tau spread, we measured bioactivity of tau seeds from inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) and superior frontal gyrus (SFG) synaptosomes in 128 individuals and demonstrated that tau seed bioactivity associates with tau phosphorylation, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and cognitive impairment. Incorporating genotype data from the same individuals within a Mendelian randomization framework showed that tau seeds in ITG induce NFTs locally as well as drive tau seeds and NFTs in SFG. Integrating antemortem functional magnetic resonance imaging data from …

Navigating Queer Identities In Rural Communities: The Role Of Social Support In Shaping Lgbq+ Adolescents’ Identity Development, Michaela Elaine Pierson Jul 2026

Navigating Queer Identities In Rural Communities: The Role Of Social Support In Shaping Lgbq+ Adolescents’ Identity Development, Michaela Elaine Pierson

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ+) develop their identities within complex social contexts. In rural settings, limited access to affirming resources and greater exposure to stigma may further shape identity development. Guided by social ecological and minority stress theories, this study examined whether perceived family and friend support predict identity affirmation and internalized homonegativity among rural LGBQ+ adolescents. Participants included 53 adolescents ages 13 to 18 drawn from a larger dataset. Group differences across demographic variables were examined, and regression analyses were used to evaluate the predictive role of family and friend support. No significant group …

The Data Drill: A Useful Crisis-Response Tool, Dan Ferris, Jenrose Fitzgerald, Hilary Sedovic, Ally Terhaar

Center for Social Development Research

Social sector organizations are often on the front lines of crisis response. Whether the crisis is a natural disaster or a result of human decisions, agencies must act quickly to minimize negative impact on the community. Doing this effectively requires significant planning and data coordination. A data drill is a planning tool developed by Amen Ra Mashariki. Much like a fire drill prepares an organization for the worst-case scenario, a data drill can prepare leaders to utilize data to make clear, informed decisions in a crisis. This case study highlights a data drill designed to address a funding crisis facing …

Design And Development Of A Novel Lxrβ/Pparδ Dual Agonist For Memory Impairment And Pathology In 3xtg-Ad Animal Model Of Alzheimer's Disease, Meenakshi Singh, Ian Steinke, Vishnu Suppiramaniam

Faculty Articles

The rising prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) underscores an urgent need for neuroprotective strategies that modulate cholesterol metabolism, neuroinflammation, improve pathology, and cognitive function. While Liver X receptors (LXRs) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are validated targets for enhancing amyloid-β and tau clearance, clinical translation of first-generation LXR agonists has been hindered by LXRα-mediated hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia. Here, we report the structure-based design of AU403, a potent, isoform-selective LXRβ/PPARδ dual agonist designed to bypass LXRα-driven hepatotoxicity. Molecular modeling indicates that AU403 achieves LXRβ selectivity by engaging residues Phe329 and Leu330 while avoiding the corresponding LXRα residues Arg305 and Leu316. …

Food systems are a major contributor to exceeding planetary boundaries1,2,3 and poor quality diets are a key mortality risk globally4. Projected population and income growth could exacerbate these challenges5. In response, there are calls for transformation towards healthy and sustainable food systems6,7,8. However, the scale and distribution of the impacts of this transformation on agriculture are underexplored. Here we show that, by 2050, the transformation of food systems towards healthy diets (adoption of the EAT–Lancet reference diet), improved productivity and halving of food waste results in a fundamental restructuring of global agriculture, aspects of which break with historical trends. Scenario …

Anoxia Tolerant Dna Replication Is Supported By Atr Kinase In The Annual Killifish Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Riley Roth-Carter, Erin Helms, Joshua C. Saldivar, Jason Podrabsky

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Hypoxia and anoxia suppress cell proliferation due to an increase in replication stress and activation of DNA damage checkpoints. Embryos of the annual killifish Austrofundulus limnaeus tolerate prolonged anoxia, indicating improved genomic stability under oxygen starvation. We investigated the cell cycle regulation of the anoxia tolerant killifish embryonic cell line PSU-AL-WS40NE during anoxia. Live-cell imaging confirms continued proliferation of WS40NE cells for the first 24 h of anoxia with minimal cell death. Fluorescence imaging shows that cells accumulate in G1 after the first day in anoxia with a rapid entry into S phase upon reoxygenation. Pharmacological inhibition shows a reliance …
