Bull’S-Eye On Borrelia: A Commensal And Consequential Pathogen, Alan L. Gillen
Bull’S-Eye On Borrelia: A Commensal And Consequential Pathogen, Alan L. Gillen

If Lyme disease causes such urgent and chronic disease issues, where do Borrelia bacteria and ticks fit into a very good creation (Genesis 1)? How did bacteria and ticks change to rely on different hosts and blood for survival? And how are these adaptations informing today’s research in bacteriology, immunology, entomology, and disease ecology? The purposeful placement of Borrelia (Fig. 1) is most likely in the gut of wild mice (Fig. 2), not domesticated mice nor man. The bacteria are communalistic in wild mice, where they may be probiotic for mutual good (Fig. 2)—the Creator made it for good at …

CcTET (Coprinopsis cinerea ten-eleven translocation) is a non-heme Fe(II)/2-oxoglutarate (2OG)-dependent oxygenase that catalyzes the oxidative demethylation of both N6-methyladenine (6mA) and 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in double-stranded DNA, distinguishing it from other TET enzymes that act exclusively on 5mC. Despite this bifunctional activity, the molecular origins of its substrate selectivity and catalytic mechanism remain poorly understood. Here, we employed a multiscale computational approach combining classical molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations to characterize the conformational dynamics and reaction pathways of CcTET. Our results show that CcTET follows the canonical Fe(IV)=O-mediated mechanism, in which hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child physical abuse often co-occur, but the frequency and risk factors for abusive injuries in IPV-exposed children remain unknown. Our objectives were to (1) determine frequency of skeletal surveys (SSs) and neuroimaging use because of IPV and their diagnostic value in children aged less than 24 months evaluated by a child abuse pediatrics specialist (CAP) and (2) identify factors associated with performance of and findings on SS and neuroimaging.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of children aged less than 24 months undergoing CAP consultations because of IPV exposure from February 2021 …

Protein glycosylation is the most prevalent post-translational modification and is known to undergo profound alterations in disease. While serum N-glycosylation has been extensively studied, interstitial fluid is gaining prominence as a minimally invasive biomarker source, underscored by the widespread clinical adoption of wearable glucose monitors in diabetic patients. However, the glycomic landscape of interstitial fluid remains largely unexplored. Here, we have performed a comparative analysis of the N-glycome from interstitial fluid and matched plasma from five healthy volunteers using liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and exoglycosidase digestions. Strikingly, the interstitial fluid N-glycome closely shows overlapping profiles with the plasma of each …

Understanding Structural Risk: Seismic Demand For Low-Fill Slender Fuel Tanks, David Yang, Sam Anderson
Understanding Structural Risk: Seismic Demand For Low-Fill Slender Fuel Tanks, David Yang, Sam Anderson
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Older fuel storage tanks, such as those in Oregon's CEI Hub, present significant seismic vulnerabilities, prompting proposals to limit storage capacity as a transitional risk mitigation measure before more permanent retrofitting actions. However, a critical knowledge gap exists regarding the applicability of standard analysis methods, like API 650, to low-fill conditions. This study utilizes the Veletsos-Yang iterative fluid-tank interaction procedure to evaluate the seismic demand of low-fill slender tanks. The analysis reveals that low-fill slender tanks exhibit slightly longer impulsive periods compared to fully-filled tanks with identical fill-height to radius ratios. Furthermore, the fixed roof mass of a low-fill tank …

BACKGROUND: The GM2 gangliosidoses (GM2) are ultra-rare neurodegenerative disorders caused by deficient hexosaminidase A and/or B activity, leading to lysosomal GM2 ganglioside accumulation. Disease onset ranges from infancy to adulthood, with earlier onset associated with more rapid progression. Neurofilament light chain (NfL), a sensitive marker of axonal injury, has been extensively investigated as a biomarker for neurodegenerative disorders, including GM2.
METHODS: To evaluate its clinical utility as a biomarker for GM2, NfL was measured in patients with GM2 enrolled in a Phase 2b, multinational, rater-blinded study of levacetylleucine [NCT03759665], and in its open-label Extension Phase (EP).
RESULTS: Nineteen participants had …

The Irrepressible/Irresponsible Trap: Justifying Migrant Deaths At The México-U.S. Border From “Prevention Through Deterrence” To “Operation Lone Star”, Álvaro José Corral, Melissa Adams Corral
School of Political Science, Public Affairs, Legal and Security Studies Faculty Publications
Operation Lone Star (OLS), a state-level effort to fortify the México-U.S. border in Texas, marked an escalation in the U.S. “Prevention Through Deterrence” (PTD) policy. How have politicians and government officials justified the escalation of immigration enforcement tactics despite the futility and lethality of these tools? Our theoretical approach relies on Beltrán’s (2020) critical exploration of migrant cruelty to understand how migrant deaths are embedded in practices of Latinx racialization and the productive quality of punishment (Valdez, 2016). This study offers a critical analysis of government documents, news coverage, and official statements concerning migrant deaths to trace the evolution of …

Do Voters Understand The Benefits Of Taxes?, Benjamin Carter, Alessandro Del Ponte, Peter Discioli
Political Science Faculty Articles and Research
We use economic experiments to study a fundamental question in political economy: Do voters understand the benefits of taxes? Participants play an economic game as members of a virtual society composed of computer players. In each round, the players earn low or high income, see the distribution of income, and then vote for low or high taxes. We test whether participants vote rationally for high taxes when poor and low taxes when rich, following a classic model in political economy, or whether they focus on the burden of taxes more than the benefits. Across three experiments, poor players voted against …

Propagation Of Dirac Spherical Waves In The Expanding Universe, Karen Yagdjian
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The explicit formulas for the spherical solutions of the Dirac equation in the expanding universe are given. The initial value of the solution can be, in particular, a wave function of the hydrogen-like atom or a spherical wave in the Minkowski space, that then propagates in the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker space-time, which is expanding with the de Sitter scale factor.

Background
Immersive technologies such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and point-of-care ultrasound are increasingly used in medical education, yet most studies evaluate these tools in isolation. As a result, the relationships among immersive experience, cognitive workload, technical performance, and downstream diagnostic assessment remain poorly understood. This exploratory secondary analysis applied the Immersive Learning Engagement-Performance (ILEP) conceptual framework to a staged multimodal dataset to examine whether selected immersive psychological variables were associated with downstream Extension Proficiency Composite and exploratory distal diagnostic performance.
Methods
This theory-informed secondary analysis used participant-level data from a prospective staged protocol involving VR, AR, and …

Background The optimal performance of doctors is critical to delivering high-quality, safe healthcare. However, 6–12% of doctors may experience challenges that impact their work performance. In many countries, including the UK, there is variation in the practice and quality of professional support services between different types of organisations. The aims of our study were (1) to identify why, how, in what contexts and for whom professional support works, (2) to develop a guide for healthcare organisations to use to optimise professional support. Methods We carried out a realist evaluation consistent with Realist And Meta-narrative Evidence Syntheses: Evolving Standards (RAMESES) II standards. …

This chapter presents a practice-as-research approach to developing an improvisational choreorobotic performance. Our performance process motivated the creation of new human–robot interaction and live choreography technologies. These technologies were tested during the performance and evaluated by the audience through feedback on their perceptions about the coexistence of humans and machines in a shared space. Examining these results through both autonomous robotics and performance studies ontologies, we formulated a new analytical process in which choreographic practice informs design and robots inform performance.

Landlord commenced a nuisance holdover proceeding against a rent-stabilized tenant in a supportive housing building. Tenant moved to dismiss on the ground that the notice of petition used non-standard language substituting 'fair use and occupancy' for the prescribed money judgment language. The court granted the motion, holding the deviation from the mandatory form was not de minimis and rendered the notice of petition fatally defective and unamendable.

Debugging consumes a substantial portion of the software development lifecycle, yet researchers do not yet understand well the effectiveness of Large Language Models (LLMs) in this task. Competitive programming offers a rich benchmark for such evaluation, given its diverse problem domains and strict efficiency requirements. We present an empirical study of LLM-based debugging on competitive programming problems and introduce DePro, a test-case-driven approach that assists programmers by correcting existing code rather than generating new solutions. DePro combines brute-force reference generation, stress testing, and iterative LLM-guided refinement to efficiently identify and resolve errors. Experiments on 13 faulty user submissions from Codeforces …

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly embedded in open-source software (OSS) ecosystems, creating complex interactions among natural language prompts, probabilistic model outputs, and execution-capable components. However, it remains unclear whether traditional vulnerability disclosure frameworks adequately capture these model-mediated risks. To investigate this, we analyze 295 GitHub Security Advisories published between January 2025 and January 2026 that reference LLM-related components, and we manually annotate a sample of 100 advisories using the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications 2025.We find no evidence of new implementation-level weakness classes specific to LLM systems. Most advisories map to established CWEs, particularly injection and deserialization weaknesses. …

Organic electrosynthesis has emerged as a powerful strategy for leveraging electricity in organic synthesis. Despite its growing popularity, the fundamental molecular interactions governing electrochemical systems remain poorly understood. Many electrosynthetic reactions show strong dependence on the identity of the allegedly inert supporting electrolyte, which can significantly impact yields and selectivity, yet the physical origins of these effects are largely unexplored. A mechanistic understanding of electrolyte effects would enable more rational reaction design for applications. Here, we use cyclic voltammetry to investigate cobalt-based metal–carbon bond homolysis and elucidate how common supporting electrolytes influence reaction rates. Bulk electrolysis experiments further reveal how …
