Lost Spirits: An Interactive Encounter With A Fractured Soul, Angela Wu
Lost Spirits: An Interactive Encounter With A Fractured Soul, Angela Wu
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Lost Spirits is a game prototype developed in the Godot engine, utilizing Gemini Pro, a Large Language Model (LLM) for rapid code generation and a local Small Language Model (SLM), Gemma 3 4B, to power AI-driven NPCs (non-player characters). The study investigates whether LLMs can democratize game development for non-technical artists and if real-time AI-driven character interaction can sustain a meaningful narrative arc without traditional branching scripts. Preliminary results suggest that AI significantly accelerates the technical pipeline—enabling the development of a functional 3D prototype within a two-month window—and facilitates rich, responsive character interactions.

Depth-Dependent Characterization Of Vertical Cracks In Concrete Using Lamb Wave Active Sensing, Nontawat Srisapan, Theo Asumah, Roohollah Askari
Michigan Tech Publications
Vertical cracks in concrete present a major challenge for many conventional nondestructive testing methods (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) methods. Elastic wave-based approaches offer strong interaction with crack faces and depth sensitivity; however, their effectiveness is often limited by the lack of repeatable and tunable excitation sources. Repeatability is critical because scattered and attenuated signals require stacking to achieve adequate signal-to-noise ratios, while tunability is essential because key crack attributes are frequency-dependent and must be probed at appropriate wavelengths. In this study, we develop an active sensing system utilizing a linear impact actuator as a repeatable and tunable mechanical …

Nobody has ever accused me of being pollyannish. In fact, one former colleague once told me “there’s no silver lining you can’t find a cloud around.”
That may mean that in addition to being a faculty member at a Christian university, I’m also perhaps the target audience for a book that the Guardian describes as “sparklingly sardonic and hilariously angry” on the back cover. I read Peter Fleming’s 2021 Dark Academia: How Universities Die while at the lake this summer.

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
Retinal diseases pose a significant global health challenge due to their potential to cause severe visual impairment and blindness. This study aimed to develop a robust deep learning ensemble framework for the automated detection and classification of retinal diseases from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. This study used OCT images from WATBORG Eye Services in Ghana, including glaucoma, macular edema, posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), and healthy eyes. The data preprocessing steps included augmentation, resizing, and one-hot encoding. The dataset was divided into training (56%), validation (14%), and testing (30%) sets using stratified sampling. Six convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, Visual …

Ni2-Imido Bispincer Platforms: Cooperative Reactivity Enabled Through Substrate Addition Across A Ni2n Unit, David De Los Santos, Kritika Gour, Manar M. Shoshani
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Transition metal imido complexes are renowned for their capacity to undertake challenging 1,2 additions owing to the high basicity of the imido moiety. Access to transition metal imidos is often limited to the addition of organic azides to metal precursors, hindering the design of molecular constructs incorporating imido units. Bimetallic bispincer complexes, 1 and 2, are presented, which are anchored by a central imido moiety supported by pyridyl imine donors, forming highly planarized Ni2N-aryl cores. Complex 2, which also features a Ni─Ni σ-bond, is able to engage in cooperative substrate cleavage of main group hydrides via a formal 1,2 addition …

Refractory inclusions caused by the degradation of materials used in the handling, filtration, flow control, and processing of molten metals, especially aluminum, are a persistent challenge that conventional analytical techniques struggle to trace. Refractory inclusions are a non-metallic particle or fragment that originates from the degradation or erosion of refractory materials used to line and contain molten metals, which subsequently becomes entrained in metal products and can lead to defects or compromised material properties. Refractory applications may be used in a range of processing and fluid-handling systems, including using grid plates in the bottom of deep bed filters that act …

Hold-Down Device For Retaining A Two-Pole Plug-On Circuit Breaker In A Load Center, Hayden Robert
Defensive Publications Series
A device and method are disclosed for retaining a two-pole plug-on ("back-fed") circuit breaker in a load center interior so that the breaker cannot be withdrawn from the bus without first removing the device, hereinafter the hold-down-bar, using a tool. The hold-down-bar is a fixed member anchored to a fixture common with the load center interior. Some examples of such fixtures include: the enclosure, load center interior itself, load center interior plastic, load center interior metal, bracket, or other suitable means of anchoring. The hold-down-bar passes into the gap between the two poles of the breaker, at the height of …

Optimum lubrication in various operating conditions is crucial for achieving high efficiency and reliable performance in electric powertrains. The existing solution of having a single cooling circuit for motor and gearbox and using a coolant pump poses challenges in proper oil draining of the oil back to the gearbox oil sump especially in tilting conditions. The proposed innovative solution uses rotor itself as pump with an inlet suction placed at the bottom of the non-drive end of the electric motor oil sump.

Fuel Cell Architecture Without Humidifier And Water Separator
Defensive Publications Series
Fuel cell electric vehicles are rapidly expanding, especially in heavy-duty transport and long-haul logistics, where they offer faster refueling times and longer ranges than traditional battery-electric vehicles. Fuel cell systems frequently integrate a turbocharger-like setup that includes a compressor, turbine, an expander and need an expensive humidifier and a water separator. The proposed solution discloses a novel fuel cell architecture that eliminates the need of a separate humidifier and water separator.

Dynamic Cascades In Hyper-Connected Geopolitical Systems: Quantifying Attrition Wave Mechanics And Resonance Stabilization Paths Toward Type 1 Civilizational Metrics, Christopher L. Eckes

Modern global security architectures behave not as isolated friction points, but as a fluid, hyper-connected ecosystem. When a high-friction decision or structural error occurs within a single systemic node, it generates a kinetic wave that propagates throughout the entire network, building destructive momentum as it strikes secondary institutional vulnerabilities. This paper introduces a rigorous, quantitative framework for mapping these interconnected crises.
By defining an 18-Month Continuous Friction Engine and deploying object-oriented system dynamics modeling, we evaluate how global stability degrades when states systematically trade technical and operational merit for ideological compliance. We anchor our wave mechanics calculations in empirical, real-world …
