Dnp Final Report: Enhancing Self-Regulated Learning And Metacognition For First-Semester Undergraduate Nursing Students, Carla S. Biondillo
Dnp Final Report: Enhancing Self-Regulated Learning And Metacognition For First-Semester Undergraduate Nursing Students, Carla S. Biondillo
DNP Final Reports
Background. First-year undergraduate nursing students often struggle to adapt their learning strategies to the higher-order thinking and clinical reasoning demands of nursing education. Ineffective study habits, low academic self-efficacy, and limited self-regulated learning (SRL) skills are consistently identified as predictors of attrition, which ranges from 20–50% nationally and internationally.
Purpose. At an academic medical center in rural East Texas, first-semester students report academic overwhelm and inadequate study strategies, consistent with national trends. A structured, evidence-based faculty coaching intervention targeting SRL and metacognition was found to be feasible within the collaborative, student-centered organizational culture.
Methods. A quality improvement (QI) design …

Simulations Of Skyrmions And Merons, Ryan Friesen, Aidan Kirk, Tom Carroll, Xuemei Cheng
Physics and Astronomy Summer Fellows
Skyrmions and merons are particle-like spin structures that are found in specific magnetic materials. Due to their stability and nanoscale size, these quasiparticles have been proposed as promising candidates for qubits in quantum computing applications. Our goal is to design materials that can host and stabilize these quasiparticles. Skyrmions and merons exist only under specific conditions, and the parameter space for these materials is vast. Thus, we use the simulation package MuMax3 to run simulations to test the viability of potential materials to simplify this search. We present on our simulations of these skyrmions and merons. This work was supported …

Dnp Final Report: Community-Based Advance Care Planning Education For Older Adults: A Quality Improvement Project, Teresa Hill
Dnp Final Report: Community-Based Advance Care Planning Education For Older Adults: A Quality Improvement Project, Teresa Hill
DNP Final Reports
Background: Advance care planning (ACP) supports patient autonomy and promotes care aligned with individual values and preferences. Despite these benefits, fewer than half of adults aged 50–80 have completed formal ACP documentation, and community-dwelling older adults rarely engage in ACP before serious illness, representing a persistent gap in early engagement.
Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project evaluated the effectiveness of a community-based ACP educational intervention in improving ACP knowledge, confidence, and engagement among older adults.
Methods: A nurse facilitator trained in the Five Wishes framework delivered a structured, 60-minute ACP workshop at a senior center in North Texas. A pre–post …

Locoregional Therapy Pressure-Enabled Drug Delivery For Liver Cancers, Thomas Eggleston, Bassem Fayek, Jacqueline Kowalke, Mina Makary
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Hepatic malignancies account for a substantial portion of global cancer mortality, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHC), and metastatic liver disease representing the most common diagnoses. While surgical resection and liver transplantation remain curative options for eligible patients, most patients are diagnosed at stages unsuitable for surgery. This has shifted medical management towards locoregional therapies (LRTs) which are often catheter-directed. Of these interventions, the use of conventional end-hole catheters for therapeutic infusion has been a mainstay of treatment, but this method is constrained by retrograde particle escape and elevated tumoral interstitial fluid pressure. Together, these factors limit drug penetration …

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant diversity, consistent with top-down control patterns where predator gains cause herbivore declines, enhancing crop outcomes. In grasslands and forests, increasing plant diversity was associated …

School of Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Background
In response to the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act, a K–12 workforce development initiative was launched to embed microelectronics education across US school districts. To promote sustainability, the initiative employed a district-wide vertical alignment strategy that progressively integrates microelectronics content and engineering-related career experiences from kindergarten through high school. While vertical alignment is often used for curriculum planning, its broader potential as a systems-level strategy remains underexplored.
Purpose
This study investigated how vertical alignment functions within a K–12 engineering workforce development initiative, focusing on enablers/barriers toward expanding and sustaining integration efforts. The research questions addressed stakeholder experiences with the …

An Introduction To The China Land Sales Data Set: The Universe Of Land-Use-Right Transfers In China 2000-2022, Yilin Hou, Lin Li, Qiang Ren
Center for Policy Research
The China Land Sales Data Set (2000-2022) includes the universe of land-use-right sales in China in the first 23 years of the 21st century, a period of the fastest mass urbanization and intense infrastructure construction in China’s history, that accompanied the rapid growth of China’s economy and household income. For this reason, this data set carries substance in many ways for anyone who needs to understand the occurrences in China of that period. The phrase “land sale” refers to the transfer of land-use right from the state as the sole owner of urban land to any individual, firm or entity …

The papers in this Research Topic (RT) extend insights on the roles of social relations, institutional arrangements, Indigenous ways of knowing, local knowledge, and decisionmaking participation in shaping water governance and practice. Despite efforts to predict flows and possible hazards, we continue to observe “unintended consequences” when humans interact with waterscapes. What we often learn, we argue, is that what appears “unintended” often reflects a deliberate architecture of exclusion; one that becomes legible only when social power relations are placed at the center of analysis alongside hydrological variables. Doing so may illuminate where injustice complicates intentions and what difference participatory …

Health disparities arise from unequal power relations shaping resource allocation, governance, and community agency. Community power is a key mechanism for addressing disparities. This study examines how visible, hidden, and invisible power operate within a U.S. county to inform inclusive governance. We conducted seven focus groups with Black and Hispanic residents (n = 68) and sixteen semi-structured interviews with elected officials, government staff, and advocacy leaders in Greenville County, South Carolina. Data were collected between March and December 2024. Transcripts were collaboratively coded in NVivo and analyzed using thematic analysis guided by Heller et al.’s Three Faces of Power …

We report reproducible magnetization anomalies appearing below room temperature in copper-doped apatite materials belonging to the LK-99 family synthesized via hydrothermal methods. These anomalies are observed consistently across samples prepared under comparable conditions. Although the extracted Mydosh parameter lies within the range often associated with vortex-glass behavior in superconductors, a detailed analysis of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, field dependence, and magnetic memory effects demonstrates that the observed phenomena are not related to superconductivity. Instead, the data are consistent with glassy magnetic freezing of interacting clusters. Compositional and structural analysis identifies covellite (CuS), one of the constituent phases in these multiphase …

Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remains a devastating cerebrovascular emergency associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Current guidelines recommend 14-21 days of inpatient monitoring and a 21-day course of nimodipine following aSAH. This retrospective study evaluates early outcomes early discharge (≤14 days post-ictus) and an abbreviated nimodipine course in highly selected patients with good-grade aSAH managed under a standardized institutional protocol. Consecutive patients enrolled in the Vancouver Ruptured Aneurysm Database (VRAD) at Vancouver General Hospital between 2022 and 2025 were included. Inclusion criteria were good-grade aSAH (WFNS Grade I-III) and discharge home within 14 days of ictus. The primary outcome was …

Multimodal Stylefusion: Cross-Attention Learning For Fashion Style Recognition, Dongmei Han, Shao Yu Huang, Jiayi Liang, Mohammad Masum
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Large language models and vision-language models enable new forms of multimodal representation learning, yet recognizing abstract fashion styles remains challenging. Most existing models focus on category-level clothing recognition and rely primarily on visual features, which often fail to capture higher-level stylistic semantics such as casual, chic, or sporty. This work introduces StyleFusion, a multimodal learning framework for fashion style recognition that integrates visual representations with semantic cues derived from LLM-generated descriptions. Image embeddings extracted using CLIP are combined with style-aware textual representations generated through caption prompting and encoded with vanilla BERT. A cross-attention fusion mechanism aligns visual and textual representations …

A Multimodal Approach To The Treatment Of Primary Chronic Pelvic Pain In Adult Women: The Positive Impact Of Shared Decision Making On Health Outcomes, Kylie Freese
Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium
Objective:
The goal of this paper was to assess approaches to management of idiopathic chronic pelvic pain (ICPP) in females to improve health outcomes.
Methods:
A structured literature search was conducted in the MEDLINE and CINAHL databases. Studies were included if they evaluated therapeutic interventions for primary/idiopathic chronic pelvic pain in adult females and reported treatment outcomes. Studies with adolescents, males, non-treatment topics, diagnostics, or unrelated conditions were excluded.
Results:
Myofascial therapy resulted in relief of anxiety and depression (-4.0+/-3.2, p< 0.001; -3.4+/-2.5, p< 0.001) and female sexual function index (FSFI) (7.8+/-6.4, p< 0.001). Psychological approaches had similar results regarding pain improvement, however showed worsening of FSFI (-0.31 [ -0.95, 0.34]; -1.95 [-3.63, -0.28]). Duloxetine and amitriptyline trials displayed improvement in pain, with amitriptyline impacting urinary symptoms and duloxetine resulted in lower pain scores. Cannabidiol improved pain, sleep, and mood disturbances (p≤0.001). Multimodal treatment resulted in greater improvement in pain (-2.19, [-3.17, -1.22], p=0.002) and FSFI (2.47, [1.06,3.88], p=0.030). No study showed statistically significant data displaying improvement/worsening quality of life.
Conclusion:
Each individual treatment resulted in improvements in the measured outcomes. Multimodal treatment approaches result in greatest outcomes when …
