Background: Externalizing and internalizing disorders are common in youth but are often studied separately, preventing researchers from identifying shared (i.e., transdiagnostic) alterations in brain structure. Using data from the ENIGMA (Enhancing NeuroImaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis) Consortium, we conducted a mega-analysis to identify shared and distinct cortical and subcortical brain alterations across internalizing (anxiety disorders and depression) and externalizing (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] and conduct disorder [CD]) disorders in youth.

Methods: 3D T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data from youths (age range 4-21 years) with anxiety disorders (n = 1044), depression (n = 504), ADHD (n = 1317), and CD (n = 1172) …

Admixed populations comprise a large portion of the human population worldwide, but are often excluded from genome-wide association studies (GWASs) due to analytic challenges. Our group developed Tractor, a local-ancestry-informed GWAS tool designed for admixed samples that produces accurate ancestry-specific effect sizes and boosts the discovery power to identify ancestry-enriched loci. However, Tractor operates under an assumption of unrelated samples. Here, to address this gap, we propose Tractor-Mix, which allows for well-calibrated association studies in datasets containing admixed samples with relatedness. Extensive simulations show that this method is competitive with other state-of-the-art approaches that do not produce ancestry-specific results. Empirical …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Objective: To identify proteomic signatures underlying 3-year progression from impaired fasting glucose (IFG) to diabetes.

Research design and methods: We examined IFG progression in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study from visit 2 (1990-1992) to visit 3 (1993-1995). We tested associations of 4,955 plasma proteins (SomaScan version 4.0) with ∼3-year progression from IFG (FG 100-125 mg/dL without diabetes) to diabetes (diagnosis, medication, or FG ≥126 mg/dL) using logistic regression models adjusted for demographics, cardiometabolic risk factors, and baseline glucose with Bonferroni correction (P < 10-5). We explored biological pathways enriched among the top proteins and calculated improvements in prediction (ΔAUC and net reclassification using 3-year risk thresholds of 6% and 15% in 80% training and 20% internal validation subsamples). We validated results in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort.

Results: There were 3,786 ARIC participants with IFG (mean [SD] age 57 [6] years, 52% female, …

Isolated Lesser Trochanter Fractures In Adults: A Systematic Review Of Malignant, Infectious, And Benign Etiologies, Max Deneroff, Ethan J. Sack, Austin Khau, Zubair Mohammed, Chadi Ellaham, Jared W. Nichols

Student Publications

Isolated lesser trochanter (LT) fractures are uncommon in adults and may be the first clue to an underlying pathologic process. In contrast to adolescent apophyseal avulsions, the same finding in a skeletally mature patient has been linked to metastatic disease, primary bone tumors, hematologic malignancy, infection, and, less often, benign traumatic, stress-related, osteoporotic, or metabolic causes. This review examined the malignant, infectious, and benign etiologies, diagnostic pathways, treatments, and outcomes that have been reported in adults aged 18 years or older presenting with a radiographically isolated LT fracture or avulsion fracture. PubMed, Embase, and Scopus were searched for English-language case …

Daily Consumer Expenditures And Income: New Evidence From A Payment Diary, Shaun Gilyard, Scott Schuh

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper demonstrates that unique daily consumption and income transactions data derived from the Diary of Consumer Payment Choice (DCPC) produced unplanned benefits: they cover high percentages of U.S. data, forecast well in real time, offer new insights to payday and pay-cycle effects, and suggest selection effects in convenience samples of transactions data. Relative to other transactions data, DCPC data are more representative, publicly available, and offers other advantages. Daily data more clearly exhibit three explicit features largely absent from lower frequencies: 1) discrepancy between consumption and expenditures; 2) discrete expenditures and income; and 3) asynchronous consumer expenditures (daily) and …

Review: Mechanics Of Mycelium Materials, Md Anwar Sadat Anik, Ehsanul Azim, Gerardo I. Zapata, Mohammad R. Islam

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The biological growth of fungal root structure, called mycelium, can be engineered to develop innovative fibrous and biocomposite materials. Mycelium materials have potential as sustainable alternatives to petroleum-derived materials for load-bearing applications. To realize this potential, there is an increasing effort dedicated to understanding the mechanics of mycelium materials. This work presents a systematic review of our current understanding of the mechanics of mycelium materials with a specific focus on structure–property relationships. The review first explores how the mycelium’s fiber network structure varies depending on whether it is grown as a two-dimensional (2D) membrane, a cellular foam, or as a …

From Personal To Personalized Goals: How Goal Nudges Improve Production, Joaquín Gómez-Miñambres, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hernán González

ESI Working Papers

We study how workers’ non-binding self-set goals affect their production and whether goal nudges (ability-calibrated goal hints) make goal setting more effective. In a real-effort task, participants first complete an ability pretest and are then assigned to one of three treatments: a no-goal baseline, a personal goal treatment with no external hint, or a personalized goal nudge that participants may accept or modify. We document a positive link between goals and production. However, merely asking workers to set goals is ineffective: when left unguided, workers anchor on conservative goals well below those induced by goal nudges, leading to underperformance. In …

Socially-Minded Investors And Corporate Behavior, Merritt B. Fox, Menesh S. Patel Aug 2026

Socially-Minded Investors And Corporate Behavior, Merritt B. Fox, Menesh S. Patel

Faculty Scholarship

Many equity investors are concerned with the world’s worsening social and environmental problems and are losing faith in the capacity of political institutions to respond. Corporate behavior is often contributing to these problems. Some investors, at least if fully informed as to costs and benefits involved, would favor corrective changes to corporate behavior even where that would lessen their investment returns. Two important questions arise: (1) given existing law, are such willing-to-sacrifice equity investors currently affecting firm behavior; and (2) should there be legal reform that makes firms more sensitive to these willing-to-sacrifice investors’ preferences? This Article seeks to answer …

Constitutive Behaviour, Failure Mechanisms, And Life Cycle Assessment Of Internally Cured Fiber-Reinforced High-Strength Concrete, Kastro Kiran V, Dhanya Sathyan, Sanjay Kumar Shukla

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

High-strength concrete (HSC) with low water-to-cement ratios undergoes self-desiccation, resulting in incomplete hydration, capillary porosity, and autogenous shrinkage that can compromise long-term performance. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functions as an internal curing agent by releasing stored water as internal relative humidity decreases, thereby sustaining hydration within the cement matrix. However, the combined influence of PEG grade, dosage, and fibre type on the constitutive response, fracture behaviour, and environmental performance of M65 HSC remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated twelve concrete mixes incorporating three curing regimes viz. Conventional curing, spray curing, and PEG-based internal curing (IC) using PEG 4000 (1.5%) and PEG …

Estimation Of Persistent Inward Currents Contribution To Inspiratory Motoneuron Firing In Humans, Ricardo N.O. Mesquita, Simon C. Gandevia, Janet L. Taylor, Anna L. Hudson, Jane E. Butler

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Persistent inward currents (PICs) are known to prolong firing of limb-muscle motoneurons. Although there is immunohistochemical evidence of PIC channels in respiratory motoneurons, it is unknown whether PICs contribute to their firing prolongation. Intramuscular electromyographic signals were recorded from human inspiratory muscles to identify motor unit (MU) activity. Diaphragm MUs were identified during quiet breathing (n = 7; one female) and MUs from the 1st, 3rd, and 5th parasternal intercostal muscles during quiet (no lung volume feedback) and voluntary (triangular-shaped lung volume feedback) breathing (n = 5 males). PIC contribution to firing prolongation was estimated via quantification of firing hysteresis …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that develops many years before clinical symptoms appear. The biological changes involved in the earliest stages remain poorly understood, particularly during the preclinical stage. Our previous work has identified gradual gut microbial and metabolic changes during this stage, suggesting these may represent early biological shifts that precede disease progression. Recent studies suggest that the gut microbiome may contribute to early AD processes through its effects on immune regulation, metabolism, and gut–brain communication. Changes in gut microbial composition, including reduced levels of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria, such as Faecalibacterium, Roseburia, and Eubacterium, …

Introduction: The analysis of metabolic profiles using high resolution mass spectrometry (MS) data provides deep insights into biological processes. In metabolomics, MS analysis generates a large number of features that represent metabolites. However, identifying specific metabolites from these features can be challenging. One of the major bottlenecks in the metabolomics field is the identification of MS features, which is a prerequisite for any biochemical interpretation. By identifying similarities and differences within a metabolite family (mFam), evaluating MS features at the metabolite family level can help assigning functional roles to individual MS features. These data can help interpreting metabolic pathways and …

A Finite Element Model To Analyze Crack-Tip Fields In A Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Elastic Solid, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah Aug 2026

A Finite Element Model To Analyze Crack-Tip Fields In A Transversely Isotropic Strain-Limiting Elastic Solid, Saugata Ghosh, Dambaru Bhatta, S. M. Mallikarjunaiah

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper presents a finite element model for the analysis of crack-tip fields in a transversely isotropic strain-limiting elastic body. A nonlinear constitutive relationship between stress and linearized strain characterizes the material response. This algebraically nonlinear relationship is critical as it mitigates the physically inconsistent strain singularities that arise at crack tips. These strain-limiting relationships ensure that strains remain bounded near the crack tip, representing a significant advancement in the formulation of boundary value problems (BVPs) within the context of first-order approximate constitutive models. For a transversely isotropic elastic material containing a crack, the equilibrium equation, derived from the balance …

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Understanding greenhouse gas emission dynamics in lawn soils is important for improving climate change mitigation strategies in urban and suburban landscapes. In this greenhouse mesocosm study, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes were measured from 12 turfgrass soil columns arranged in an unreplicated, completely randomized 4 × 3 factorial design. Four amendment treatments (biochar, compost, bio-com [1:1 volume ratio of biochar and compost], and unamended control) were combined with three water-table conditions (full saturation, half saturation, and unsaturated), with a single column representing each treatment combination. Columns were irrigated at 1 cm day−1 for 24 days, …
