This article describes areas in which the integration of digital scholarship activities as core parts of librarianship has and has not become commonplace and traces larger-scale developments in the academy and global knowledge landscape that have contributed to the accuracy of the predictions made in 2017.

Trademarks, Functionality, And Competition, Glynn Lunney Aug 2026

Trademarks, Functionality, And Competition, Glynn Lunney

Faculty Scholarship

Courts and commentators have long thought that the purpose of trademark and unfair competition law is to distinguish fair competition from unfair competition and prohibit the latter. Yet, trademark law has a more fundamental, more foundational purpose. Before trademark law can distinguish fair competition from unfair competition, there must first be competition. That makes ensuring competition trademark law’s highest priority. Identifying and prohibiting unfair competition becomes, by necessity, a subordinate concern. Until 1982, courts recognized this hierarchy and enforced a broad and flexible functionality limitation on trademark or trade dress protection to ensure competitive markets. In 1982, however, this changed. …

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary Aug 2026

Law Enforcement With Rent Dissipation, Murat C. Mungan, J. Shahar Dillbary

Faculty Scholarship

We consider a framework which brings together losses arising from rent-dissipation and the workhorse model of law enforcement. Governmental actors engage in a contest to share the proceeds from the enforcement of the law through monetary fines, which leads to rent-dissipation. This causes monetary sanctions to be costly, rendering the model used for studying nonmonetary sanctions a better fit for their analysis. The effect of rent-dissipation on optimal sanctions is directly related to the sanction elasticity of offenses measured at the classic optimum (i.e., where the expected sanction equals the direct harm from the offense). When offenses are inelastic, the …

Constitutional Drafting Processes And Constitutional Success, Adam Chilton, Murat C. Mungan, Mila Versteeg Aug 2026

Constitutional Drafting Processes And Constitutional Success, Adam Chilton, Murat C. Mungan, Mila Versteeg

Faculty Scholarship

Several recent constitution-making processes have been celebrated for being participatory, inclusive, and representative. However, many of these processes also failed. We theorize that aspects of these kinds of constitutional drafting processes could reduce the probability of constitutional success. To show why, we construct a “Constitution Drafting game” (CD game) in which representatives from different interest groups must draft a constitution. We consider the case where the probability of constitutional success is single peaked, but the value from successful adoption is increasing in the degree of issue protection chosen. The drafting process then leads to protection choices that are above those …

Experimental And Molecular Dynamic Simulation Assessment Of H2/Brine/Cement Interfacial Interactions During Underground Hydrogen Storage, Nurudeen Yekeen, Sikiru, Ahmed Al-Yaseri, Berihun Mamo Negash

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Cement is widely used as a structural and sealing material to ensure hydrogen containment in geological formations. However, the influence of H2–brine–cement wettability and H2–brine interfacial tension (IFT) on the integrity and sealing efficiency of cemented caprocks remains poorly understood. Furthermore, previous studies provide limited insights into hydrogen adsorption and sorption behavior under subsurface storage conditions. In this study, wettability and IFT of H2–brine–cement systems were experimentally measured at pressures of 500–1000 psi and temperatures of 25–50 °C to evaluate hydrogen migration, trapping, and the performance of cemented seals. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted at pressures of 500–3000 psi and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The wastewater treatment paradigm is shifting from pollutant removal toward integrated systems that simultaneously achieve contaminant treatment and resource recovery. Despite extensive literature on individual technologies, systematic frameworks for designing multistage integrated wastewater treatment and resource recovery systems remain notably absent. This review addresses this gap by developing a comprehensive decision framework that guides designers from influent characterization through technology selection across pretreatment, main process, and post-treatment stages. The framework accommodates diverse integration strategies, ranging from fully unified treatment processes to stage-specific configurations where each treatment stage employs technologies tailored to its designated function. Rather than optimizing for a single …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction Nitrate and nitrite, present in ground and drinking water, as well as foods, may contribute to bladder cancer through the formation of carcinogenic N -nitrosamines. However, risk likely depends on both the source and endogenous nitrosating factors. Methods Among participants of the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Cohort (N = 54,610) with no history of cancer, source-specific nitrate and nitrite intakes (drinking water, plant sources, naturally occurring animal sources, and additive-permitted meat sources) were estimated from national water monitoring data and food frequency questionnaires using food databases. Bladder cancer cases were ascertained through the Danish Cancer Registry. Multivariable-adjusted Cox …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The extrusion process in 3D concrete printing (3DCP) facilitates horizontal alignment of steel fibers along the printing direction, thus enhancing the load-bearing capacity of printed elements. However, such shear-induced fiber alignment is highly sensitive to rheological properties. This study investigates how variations in dynamic yield stress (τd) and plastic viscosity (μ), influence the extrudability, fiber orientation and dispersion, and anisotropic mechanical behavior of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Five viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) types were incorporated at two content levels to modify the rheology of printable UHPC. Results showed that moderate VMA additions improved printability, whereas excessive contents markedly increased τd and μ; …

Kinesiology & Sport Management Scholarship

Excess adiposity is linked to anabolic resistance by blunting the postprandial myofibrillar protein synthetic response to protein ingestion. Full-fat dairy milk may overcome this resistance via a matrix combining high-quality protein with anti-inflammatory lipids. Therefore, we compared the effects of ingesting full-fat dairy milk versus a non-dairy macronutrient match isolated blend on the regulation of postprandial myofibrillar and mitochondrial protein synthesis rates and markers of systemic (i.e., IL-6 and TNF-α) and muscle-related inflammation (i.e., NF-κB, NLRP3, TLR4, and MyD88). Twenty-two obese and overweight adult males and females (BMI = 31.1 ± 3.7 kg m−2; aged 35.3 ± 13.2 y) were …

Cae-If: An Anomaly Detection Approach Based On Temporal Representation Of The Reconstruction Error, Haijun Geng, Zhi Zhang, Yuhua Qian, Bo Yang, Qi Ma, Haotian Chi, Jing Yang, Xia Yin

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In the field of network traffic anomaly detection, unsupervised learning plays a critical role yet encounters significant challenges, including accurately determining anomaly thresholds and modeling the intricate temporal dynamics of network traffic. To address these challenges, we present a novel approach, termed Convolutional Autoencoder-Isolation Forest (CAE-IF). By leveraging packet-level reconstruction errors with contextual information, our approach obviates the need for manual threshold setting and effectively captures temporal dynamics. The process commences with the application of the damped incremental statistics algorithm to extract statistical features from network traffic with temporal information. Subsequently, the Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE) is employed to compute the …
