A Semantic Data Management Framework For Uncertainty Quantification In Synchrotron Diffraction Pattern Analysis, Ayorinde E. Olatunde, Ozan Dernek, Erika I. Barcelos, Roger H. French, Anirban Mondal Aug 2026

A Semantic Data Management Framework For Uncertainty Quantification In Synchrotron Diffraction Pattern Analysis, Ayorinde E. Olatunde, Ozan Dernek, Erika I. Barcelos, Roger H. French, Anirban Mondal

Student Scholarship

Advancements in technology have enabled scientists and engineers in the synchrotron science domain to generate high-dimensional data. To conduct a machine learning study on these data, an analyst undergoes multiple analytical stages, including dimensionality reduction, predictive modelling, and uncertainty quantification (UQ).

To ensure reproducibility in science, it is necessary to document the semantic relationships among the stages of the analysis to enable provenance, interoperability, and knowledge reuse. In this work, we present a Semantic Data Management (SDM) framework rooted in FAIR principles that provides ontologies for UQ workflows. We illustrate the application of UQ ontology in synchrotron diffraction pattern analyses …

Impact Of After-School Care On Maternal Income: Evidence From Canadian Administrative Data, Ailin He, Laetitia Renée, Nagham Sayour Aug 2026

Impact Of After-School Care On Maternal Income: Evidence From Canadian Administrative Data, Ailin He, Laetitia Renée, Nagham Sayour

All Works

This paper estimates the average causal effect of access to subsidized before- and after-school care on the labour market outcomes of mothers. Specifically, we analyze a major policy reform implemented in Quebec (Canada) in 1998, which required all public primary schools to provide before- and after-school care at a low fixed fee, thereby reducing costs and expanding availability for families. We identify the intent-to-treat effect of the reform on service use and maternal labour market outcomes using administrative tax return data and a triple difference design. We find that, 7 years after implementation, the policy led to a substantial increase …

Bdelloid Rotifers Harbor A Voltage-Gated Proton Channel With Distinct Mechanistic Features, Liang Yan, Chiara Boschetti, Liang Hong Aug 2026

Bdelloid Rotifers Harbor A Voltage-Gated Proton Channel With Distinct Mechanistic Features, Liang Yan, Chiara Boschetti, Liang Hong

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Bdelloid rotifers are renowned for their extraordinary resilience. They can survive desiccation and long-term freezing and revive once favorable conditions return. Such remarkable survival abilities suggest that the evolution of specialized molecular adaptations sustain pH homeostasis under extreme environmental stress. In the present study, we identify and functionally characterize an isoform of the voltage-gated proton channel (Hv) from the bdelloid rotifer Adineta ricciae, which we name ArHv2. Unlike its paralog ArHv1 and human Hv1 that activate only at positive membrane potentials and contribute modestly to proton extrusion under normal conditions, the ArHv2 activates even at negative potentials, enabling rapid and …

How Racial-Ethnic, Immigration, And 2slgbtq+ Intersectional Self-Efficacy Of Gender-Sexuality Alliance Advisors Shapes Youth Members’ Positive Experiences, Tessa M.L. Kaufman, Wouter J. Kiekens, Maria Di Stasio, Alex Mascarino, Robert A. Marx, V. Paul Poteat

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Gender–sexuality alliances (GSAs) provide critical support for 2SLGBTQ+ youth, yet the role of advisors—particularly in their self-efficacy to address race-, ethnicity-, and immigration-related issues, including how these intersect with sexual and gender identity, a construct we term racial-ethnic, immigration, and intersectional self-efficacy (REISE)—remains understudied. This study examined (a) which advisor-, GSA-, and school-related factors are associated with advisors' REISE, and (b) how this efficacy relates to youth members' socioemotional experiences. Data were collected from 627 GSA members at three time points and from 64 advisors at one time point from 51 GSAs in Massachusetts, New York City, and California. Advisors' …

Arthroscopic Saucerization Of A Medial Discoid Meniscus In A Young Female Athlete: A Case Report, Travis Hodge, Brett Norris, Ryan Sorenson, Peter Schultz, Michael Dempewolf

Student Publications

A discoid meniscus is a congenital abnormality of the meniscus characterized by a disk-shaped configuration. Although medial involvement is uncommon, symptomatic cases may present in young, active individuals with mechanical knee symptoms that limit sports participation. A 15-year-old female athlete presented with chronic medial knee pain, mechanical symptoms, and an inability to fully extend the knee despite failed conservative management. MRI demonstrated a complete discoid medial meniscus with a central tear. Arthroscopy confirmed a discoid medial meniscus without significant peripheral instability. Arthroscopic saucerization was performed while preserving a stable peripheral rim. By the conclusion of the three-month follow-up, the patient …

A Poetic Call For And A Reflection And Commentary On Clarity, Understanding, Hope, Courage, And Compassion, Carroy U. Ferguson Aug 2026

A Poetic Call For And A Reflection And Commentary On Clarity, Understanding, Hope, Courage, And Compassion, Carroy U. Ferguson

Psychology Faculty Publication Series

Finding a published poem I had written as a teenager, titled “The Heavens Weep.” this article uses that poem as the basis for a commentary that reflects on the state of the world today (2026),  As a commentary, the article uses the poetic and metaphoric words in the poem as a relevant "reality check" for what is still going on today.  In essence, the commentary is about a call for Clarity, Understanding, Hope, Courage, and Compassion, or what I call Archetypal Energies, Higher Vibrational Energies that operate deep within our individual and collective psyches to creatively urge us to "see" …

Improving Patient Satisfaction Through Post-Urgent Care Visit Follow-Up Calls: A Quality Improvement Project, Lindsay Boyer Aug 2026

Improving Patient Satisfaction Through Post-Urgent Care Visit Follow-Up Calls: A Quality Improvement Project, Lindsay Boyer

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract

Purpose This quality improvement project aimed to determine whether implementing standardized post-visit follow-up calls within 24–48 hours of urgent care visits would improve patient satisfaction by increasing the clinic’s Net Promoter Score (NPS) from a baseline of 62. Background Declining NPS scores during peak clinic seasons suggested a gap in post-visit communication and follow-up, highlighting the need for a standardized nursing intervention to better support patients after discharge.

Methodology Guided by the AIDET communication framework and the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle, scripted follow-up calls were implemented across five cycles from February to April 2026 to assess recovery, reinforce discharge instructions, answer questions, …

A Review On Bridge Scour Analysis In Cohesive Soils And Scour-Susceptible Rocks, Darud E. Sheefa, Zhen Liu, Stanley Vitton, Brian Barkdoll Aug 2026

A Review On Bridge Scour Analysis In Cohesive Soils And Scour-Susceptible Rocks, Darud E. Sheefa, Zhen Liu, Stanley Vitton, Brian Barkdoll

Michigan Tech Publications

Bridge scour analysis, especially scour depth calculation practices implemented mostly by hydraulics and geotechnical engineers, was traditionally built upon flume tests with cohesionless materials, e.g., sands. As a result, the analysis of bridge scour in cohesive materials, i.e., cohesive soils and scour-susceptible rocks, was less understood and thus has been gaining increasing attention. This paper presents a state-of-the-practice survey on the analysis of bridge scour in cohesive materials represented by cohesive soils and scour-susceptible rocks. This includes a literature review covering the concepts and understanding of scour susceptibility, material sampling, erodibility tests, bridge scour calculation methods for cohesive soils and …

The Aste-Bgc Data-Assimilative Regional Ocean Biogeochemical Model, L. A. Moseley, G. A. Mckinley, D. Carroll, D. Menemenlis, R. Dussin, A. T. Nguyen Aug 2026

The Aste-Bgc Data-Assimilative Regional Ocean Biogeochemical Model, L. A. Moseley, G. A. Mckinley, D. Carroll, D. Menemenlis, R. Dussin, A. T. Nguyen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

We present a data-assimilative regional ocean biogeochemical model, ASTE-BGC, which simulates the physical and biogeochemical state of the North Atlantic Ocean from 2002 to 2017. Model physics are provided by a physical state estimate (ASTE), which assimilates O(109) in situ and satellite-based observations over the model domain and time period. Model biogeochemistry is simulated by a medium-complexity biogeochemical module (BLING), which simulates nine prognostic biogeochemical tracers and three ecological classes. Through a three-step optimization process which combines informal adjustments and formal mathematical optimization, we minimize model-data misfit between a “spun-up” simulated biogeochemical state and O(105) BGC-Argo …

Identification Of Inhibitors Of An N- Monooxygenase From Aspergillus Fumigatus, Kendra B. Bufkin, Pablo Sobrado Aug 2026

Identification Of Inhibitors Of An N- Monooxygenase From Aspergillus Fumigatus, Kendra B. Bufkin, Pablo Sobrado

Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works

The flavin-dependent N-monooxygenase SidA from Aspergillus fumigatus catalyzes the conversion of l -ornithine to N5-hydroxy- l -ornithine. This product is incorporated into hydroxamate containing siderophores, which are iron chelators required for growth during A. fumigatus infection in mammals. The activity of SidA has been shown to be required for siderophore biosynthesis. Here, we used a colorimetric product formation assay to screen a small-molecule library for the identification of potential inhibitors of SidA. Ebselen, an organoselenium compound, was identified as an inhibitor of SidA. This compound inhibited SidA with an IC50 value of 11 ± 1 μM. Ebselen derivative, …

Wind Effects Induced By Multivortex Tornadoes On A Low-Rise Building, Yi Zhao, Guirong Yan, Tetsuya Takemi, John Van De Lindt Aug 2026

Wind Effects Induced By Multivortex Tornadoes On A Low-Rise Building, Yi Zhao, Guirong Yan, Tetsuya Takemi, John Van De Lindt

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Multivortex tornadoes contain two or more subvortices that orbit within a parent vortex and can generate highly intermittent and localized near-ground wind fields. This study investigates how tornado flow structure affects wind effects on a low-rise building using large-eddy simulations. One single-vortex tornado and three multivortex tornadoes with different subvortex configurations are examined by systematically varying swirl ratio. Tornado translation is modeled using a relative-motion framework in which the building traverses the vortex field. Aerodynamic force and moment coefficients are evaluated along the traversing path. Additional stationary simulations are conducted to examine repeated load amplification associated with subvortex passages. Compared …

Reframing Soil Freezing As An Unsaturated Process, Antai Dong, Xiong Zhang Aug 2026

Reframing Soil Freezing As An Unsaturated Process, Antai Dong, Xiong Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Soil freezing and frost heave are inherently unsaturated soil phenomena. However, most existing numerical models are based on saturated soil mechanics or assume full saturation. This simplification introduces conceptual inconsistencies, requires modifications that violate fundamentals in soil mechanics and fluid mechanics, and often leads to the use of self-conflicting soil properties. To overcome these limitations, this study develops a physically consistent, fully coupled thermohydraulic model for soil freezing grounded in modern unsaturated soil mechanics. A soil freezing characteristic surface (SFCS) is introduced to represent unfrozen water content in partially frozen soils as a function of both suction and temperature. Recognizing …
