Sur Le Frottement Des Corps Solides, Leonhard Euler

In this paper, Euler inquires into the nature of the force of friction. He proposes a model for understanding friction in terms of gravity, and deduces from this model that kinetic friction should be less than static friction. Euler then proposes an experiment for determining the quantity of kinetic friction using an object descending an inclined plane, and provides the formulas necessary to solve for friction given the specifications of the object’s descent of the plane. He also illustrates that, as in implication of kinetic friction being less than static friction, it is impossible to make an object descend a …

After the Restoration of the English monarchy in the person of Charles II in 1660, the new king and his first Parliament declared the anniversary of the beheading of his father Charles I (January 30, 1649) a religious holiday with a special commemoration in the Book of Common Prayer, naming the late monarch a saint and martyr. This holiday was not generally celebrated in Massachusetts until the emergence of several Anglican churches there in the early eighteenth century. In 1750, Jonathan Mayhew, the twenty-nine-yearold pastor of the West (Congregational) Church in Boston, took occasion to dispute the first Charles’ credentials …

The court responded by issuing a writ of habeas corpus to have Winter brought before it, which was done the same day. It reviewed the indenture he produced, and there being “nothing made to appear that the said servant had ever been provided for as in said indenture mentioned and the particular facts complained of appearing to be true” ... the court concluded that Winter was not entitled to retain John’s custody, which was returned to his mother.
