Key Strategies Enabling The Contribution Of Social Infrastructure In Climate-Proofing Cities: An Explorative Case Study Of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Sara Elgamal, Alaa El.Eashy, Sherif Sheta
HBRC Journal
Social infrastructure, as the physical medium for social life in cities, is increasingly being acknowledged for its ability to offer climate-proofing benefits both in times of climate stability and climate disturbances. However, more evidence is needed on how social infrastructure can be deliberately shaped to contribute to climate-proofing cities. Our study addresses this gap through exploring the key strategies which ensure the effective engagement of social infrastructure (SI) in climate proofing cities (CPC). An explorative case study of Rotterdam city is performed, as the city is well recognized as a pioneer in climate resilience through spatial planning. Data sources for …

Engineering and Technology Journal
Electrospun nanofibrous membranes are a promising technique for wastewater treatment owing to their high porosity and surface properties. This manuscript presents a systematically designed investigation on the preparation and optimization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) blended nanofibrous membranes for oil/water separation. Nanofibrous membranes were synthesized by electrospinning with PAN weight percentages of 0 wt%, 10 wt%, 25 wt%, and 50 wt%. The impact of PAN weight percentages on the morphology and separation performance of the membranes was investigated. The membranes were analyzed harnessing scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and water contact angle (WCA) …

Tio2 Quantum Dots Supported On Poly(Chloroaniline): Enhanced Photocatalytic Degradation And Recyclability For Wastewater Treatment, Ibrahem A. Ibrahem
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
A poly(chloroaniline)/TiO2 quantum-dot (ClAn/TiQD) hybrid photocatalyst was prepared by in situ oxidative polymerization to address the limited visible-light utilization and charge recombination commonly associated with TiO2-based systems in dye-bearing wastewater treatment. Structural and spectroscopic analyses confirmed retention of anatase TiO2 after hybrid formation, preservation of the conjugated polymer backbone, and interfacial coupling between TiQD and ClAn. TEM showed ClAn particles of 33–42 nm, TiQD domains of 3.9–6.9 nm, and hybrid particles of 22–25 nm. The composite also exhibited improved thermal resistance relative to ClAn, with the principal degradation stage shifted to higher temperature and the total …

Integrative Dna Barcoding In Ficus Cultivars In Taif Highlands, Saudi Arabia: Complementary Roles Of Rbcl And Trnh-Psba Markers, Amal A. Alyamani
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
The common fig (Ficus carica L.) is a commercially significant fruit crop in Saudi Arabia, with particular importance in the Al-Taif highland region. In this study, three DNA barcodes (rbcL, ITS, and trnH-psbA) were evaluated on eleven fig cultivars collected from various geographically distinct sites within the Al-Taif highlands. A combination of three plant DNA barcoding markers, rbcL, ITS, and trnH-psbA, alongside selected morphological traits of mature leaves and fruits, was used to assess the genetic and phenotypic diversity among Fig varieties. The integrative approach aimed to achieve reliable cultivar discrimination and enhance understanding of the genetic structure and …

Adaptive Uav Network Defense Against Cyber Threats Using Gt-Tgc-Drl Hybrid Framework, Ahmed I. Taloba, Meshari S. Alshammroki
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAVs) communication networks are becoming easy targets of cyber-attacks such as denial of service, spoofing and intrusion, compromising on the mission-critical operations. The existing methods for cybersecurity using conventional machine learning or pure deep learning cannot reflect the complexity of spatial and temporal dependencies and cannot be adaptive against new cyber-attacks in UAV networks. In order to surmount these constraints, we present a new Graph Transformer-Temporal Graph Convolutional-Deep Reinforcement Learning (GT-TGC-DRL) architecture to adaptive UAV cyber defense. The methodology models UAV network traffic in terms of graph structures, with nodes used to model UAVs and edges …

Industry Perspectives On Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Utilization For Dam Inspection And Maintenance, Abdulaziz Alzahrani, Mohammed Sulaiman
University of Bisha Journal for Basic and Applied Sciences
Effective inspection and maintenance of dams are essential for infrastructure longevity, water resource management, and public safety. Historically, dam maintenance relied heavily on visual inspections, which were limited in scope and accuracy, especially in detecting internal structural issues such as seepage and foundational degradation. This paper presents an industry-oriented evaluation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a transformative tool in modern dam inspection and maintenance. The study explores UAVs' capacity to enhance efficiency, safety, and precision in identifying structural anomalies, erosion, and environmental degradation. Survey data collected from contractors in the Saudi water sector provides insight into current adoption levels, …

A Principled Approach To Equitable Compensation Undea Principled Approach To Equitable Compensation Under Erisa § 502(A)(3)R Erisa § 502(A)(3), Gabriel Juedemann
University of Chicago Law Review
In many cases, a beneficiary of an employee benefit plan suffers an injury due to a fiduciary’s misfeasance, but the beneficiary does not have a claim under ERISA’s benefit-recovery provision. In these circumstances, the beneficiary’s only path to relief is § 502(a)(3)’s authorization of “appropriate equitable relief.” But whether that provision permits monetary compensation when a beneficiary sues a fiduciary is a question the Supreme Court has not cleanly resolved, and circuit courts have fractured as a result.
This Comment argues that equitable compensation—or surcharge—should be available under § 502(a)(3) when a beneficiary sues a fiduciary, but only under certain …

Administrative Acquiescence: An Analysis Of Nonadverse Litigation Involving Administrative Agencies, Sami Winawer
University of Chicago Law Review
When an administrative agency declines to defend the constitutionality of its structure, courts must grapple with the unusual scenario in which the parties before it agree—or at least do not disagree—on the merits of the constitutional question at issue. This Comment seeks to provide some clarity to this area of the law by proposing a multifactor framework for courts to use at the standing stage when determining the justiciability of a question when the Executive declines to defend a federal statute, and explaining how these factors can be weighed in cases in which an administrative agency declines to defend some …

The Non-Binding Bind: Reframing Precatory Stockholder Proposals Under Delaware Law, Kyle A. Pinder
The Non-Binding Bind: Reframing Precatory Stockholder Proposals Under Delaware Law, Kyle A. Pinder
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
Rule 14a-8 under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 allows stockholders to submit proposals for inclusion in a company’s proxy materials. The rule assumes that Delaware law provides stockholders with the right to submit non-binding proposals for stockholder approval. But as many have observed, this assumption lacks a firm basis in state law, particularly in Delaware. If such a right exists, a stockholder conducting its own proxy solicitation could submit numerous precatory proposals, including those advancing narrow or special interests. This article concludes that, under Delaware law, stockholders do not have an inherent right to submit precatory proposals. Accordingly, a …

Navigating The Eu’S Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive: Strategic Implications For Us Companies, Silvia Ciacchi, Michael Faure, Sharon Oded
Michigan Business & Entrepreneurial Law Review
The European Union’s (“EU”) Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (“CSDDD” or the “Directive”) introduces new human rights and environmental obligations that reshape global corporate governance. This paper explores its impact on US companies, with a particular focus on compliance strategies under both direct and indirect applicability. It contrasts tactical compliance, which emphasizes risk mitigation while meeting minimum legal requirements, against strategic compliance, where companies use sustainability to gain a competitive edge in the market.
This paper highlights how varying enforcement levels across EU Member States may incentivize companies to “forum shop” or choose jurisdictions with more relaxed enforcement. It also …

Revisiting The Secretary Problem, Steven J. Brams, D. Marc Kilgour
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The venerable Secretary Problem asks how a decision maker (DM) should select one of n candidates, who come up randomly, when the only information available is each candidate’s strict rank within the set of previous applicants. Moreover, DM may select only the current candidate. Our illustrative case has n = 9 candidates, for which the Standard Method is to reject outright the first 3 candidates and then choose the first of the 4th through 8th candidates who is better than all of the first three, or the 9th candidate if none of them is. We compare the Standard Method with …

Business Management Review
The study assesses the relationship between TPB antecedents and GIS business outcomes in SMEs, using an expanded TPB framework. Researchers gathered data from SMEs via a survey and analysed it using PLS-SEM. The framework used in the study explains 58.5% of the differences in GIS business outcomes. The results reveal that subjective norms, attitude, benefits, and obstacles are significant predictors of GIS business outcomes such as ecological IT practices, although perceived behavioural control displays an insignificant negative relationship. The study extended the TPB model by incorporating GIS benefits and GIS obstacles as additional factors influencing GIS adoption, business outcomes, …

The History Of Communal Water Fluoridation And Its Continued Safe And Efficacious Use Today, William J. Maloney
Bulletin of the Ninth District Dental Association
The profession of dentistry consistently strives to better the oral and dental conditions of people throughout the world. This is accomplished in a variety of ways- improving dental materials, refining and developing new technologies and educating the public on matters which affect their health. In order to achieve these beneficent goals dentistry relies on evidence-based facts and science.
Unfortunately, there will always be a segment of society which puts forth assertions that are not based on solid evidence. Communal water fluoridation has been a safe and effective public health effort to decrease humanity’s suffering from dental caries for decades. This …
