Misplaced Trust In Artificial Professional Advice, Claudia Haupt
Misplaced Trust In Artificial Professional Advice, Claudia Haupt
Journal of Science & Technology Law
The professional relationship constitutes a distinctive social interaction in which the professional has knowledge that the client or patient lacks but needs to make important decisions. A specific legal and ethical framework governs this relationship. Traditionally, this framework assumes interactions between human actors and is designed to safeguard normative values inherent to human-centered professional advice-giving. Prominent among the foundational assumptions are expectations of competence, loyalty, and trust. Individuals seeking professional advice expect to receive accurate and comprehensive advice reflecting the insights of the profession.
This Essay examines the social relationship based on knowledge asymmetries and trust underlying the human professional …
Cartelized Parliament And The Decline Of Legislative Oversight In Indonesia’S Multiparty Presidentialism, Shanty Kartika Dewi, Anis Fuad
Cartelized Parliament And The Decline Of Legislative Oversight In Indonesia’S Multiparty Presidentialism, Shanty Kartika Dewi, Anis Fuad
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This article examines the tendency of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) in the 2024–2029 term to move toward a cartelized parliament within Indonesia’s multiparty presidential system. It addresses how the dominance of an oversized governing coalition after the 2024 election weakens parliamentary opposition and reduces the effectiveness of checks and balances over the executive. The study employs a qualitative explanatory approach using a single-case study design, process tracing, and documentary analysis. The data are drawn from official state and parliamentary documents, KPU decisions, legislative agendas, democracy monitoring reports, credible media coverage, and public statements by political elites. The findings …

Exploring Conceptions Of Engineering Design And Sustainability In Informal K–12 Engineering Education, Mobina Beheshti, Eunice Y. Kang, Avneet Hira
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
In this study we investigate K–12 students’ conceptualizations of sustainability, their perspectives on the role of engineers in sustainable practices, and how augmented reality (AR) can facilitate sustainability-oriented engineering design activities in informal settings. The AR technology used in this study includes the Merge Cube (a physical cube that serves as a digital canvas for AR) and CoSpaces Edu (an online platform that allows students to create 3D models and animate them using code). We employ a design-based research methodology, using qualitative narrative and artifact analysis to address the research questions: (1) What are students’ conceptions of sustainability and the …

Heat Transfer And Flow Characteristics Through Acentric Twisted Oval Tubes: A 3d Numerical Investigation, Mohsen H. Fagr, Karim Egab, Hayder M. Hasan
Al-Bahir
Tube oval- twisting techniques have been consistently used to promote heat transfer and flow turbulence properties within tubes, enhancing flow mixing, disturbing boundary layers, and hence, offering higher thermal efficiency. However, the acentric twisted oval tubes have more intricacy as compared with twisted oval tubes due to the eccentricity of their twisting pattern and using them in heat transfer. The current study performs 8 configurations of the acentric twisted heating oval tube that is exposed to a constant heat flux of 1750W/m². In addition, 2 cases of the typical centric twisted oval and plain circular tubes for comparison purposes under …

Roblox-Related Protest And Political Opposition In Indonesia: Game-Native Repertoires And Discursive Resistance, Ruth Stany Melisa
JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA
Digital games increasingly intersect with political communication as environments in which political grievances are reformulated through gaming cultures and vernaculars. This study examines Roblox-related protests associated with the Indonesia Gelap movement and the controversy surrounding the Indonesian Armed Forces Law (UU TNI) in March 2025. It asks how political opposition is constructed through game-native and symbolic repertoires and how these discourses invoke socially shared representations and relate to political power. Using a qualitative design, the study analyses six selected digital artefacts retrieved from X and TikTok. Visual and textual material constitute the primary data, while captured comments are …

Why Do Indonesians Travel Abroad For Medical Treatment? A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Lucky Sarjono Buranda, Aries Wahyuningsih, Steven Busby
Journal of Indonesian Health Policy and Administration
More than one million Indonesian citizens travel abroad for medical treatment each year, generating financial transactions exceeding IDR 180 trillion (USD 11.5 billion). This study aimed to explore the reasons why Indonesians seek medical treatment overseas. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed using in-depth interviews with Indonesian citizens who had received or were currently receiving medical treatment outside Indonesia. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed through coding to identify themes, subthemes, and related properties. Interviews were conducted with 18 participants from three major Indonesian cities (Makassar, Surabaya, and Batam), as well as individuals receiving treatment in Singapore and Malaysia. …

Mapping Coastal Community-Based Tourism Empowerment: Public Policy And Sustainable Development On Bangka Island, Putra Pratama Saputra, Hadiyanto Abdul Rachim, Arie Surya Gutama, Moch. Zaenal Hakim
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study analyzes the conceptualization and practice of community-based tourism empowerment on Bangka Island, serving as a strategic approach to promote sustainable and inclusive coastal tourism. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered through interviews with nine key informants, observations, and policy document analysis. Findings reveal that these empowerment initiatives significantly strengthen individual and institutional capacities, enhance community participation in tourism planning, and drive economic diversification from extractive industries to sustainable tourism. Furthermore, this approach facilitates economic transformation through the development of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and coastal ecotourism, concurrently reinforcing environmental conservation and cultural preservation. However, …
Patronage Pardons, Lee Kovarsky
Patronage Pardons, Lee Kovarsky
Duke Law Journal
Abuse of presidential pardon power is taking a new and frightening turn. The Donald Trump administration is using clemency, including pardons, to signal impunity to regime allies contemplating misconduct. Such clemency has a predictable effect: it induces loyalist crime by reducing the expected penalty. "Patronage pardoning" refers to the clemency practices that power this loyalty-for-protection exchange. Those practices pose a grave threat to the rules-based constitutional order, and they are the subject of this Article.
Some historical observations predicate the diagnostic and prescriptive arguments that come later. Most importantly, the Framers concentrated federal pardon power in the president because they …
Ensuring "The Right To Live In The World": The Right To Repair Powered Wheelchairs, Maximillian J. Grahl
Ensuring "The Right To Live In The World": The Right To Repair Powered Wheelchairs, Maximillian J. Grahl
Duke Law Journal
Twenty-seven years ago, in Olmstead v. L.C., the Supreme Court held that improperly institutionalizing people with disabilities is a form of unlawful discrimination. In doing so, the Court acknowledged that people with disabilities have a right to live free from confinement. Yet today, repair restrictions and outdated Medicare standards combine to threaten powered-wheelchair users' ability to live out in the world. Some states have responded by passing right-to-repair laws, which require powered-wheelchair manufacturers and suppliers to provide the resources necessary for more accessible and more timely repairs. This Note analyzes these state laws in the context of previous right-to …

From Source To Sip: Exploring South Dakota’S Water Values, Sushant Mehan, Robert E. Dalton, Jeremiah Bergstrom, Kayode Adebayo, Kellie Kolb, Peggy Schlechter
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Water guides South Dakota’s economy, ecosystems, and quality of life, yet there is limited empirical evidence on how residents understand water issues, what concerns they prioritize, and how they assign responsibility for water protection. This study examines public water knowledge, key water concerns, preferred management actions, and perceptions of responsibility for safeguarding water resources in South Dakota. We administered the South Dakota Water Resources Survey from July 2024 to August 2025, with responses from 461 adults across rural and urban communities. The instrument captured demographic characteristics and perceptions related to water knowledge, concerns, actionable items, and responsible parties. We analyzed …
Private Equity For All: The Paradoxical Push To Democratize Private Markets, William W. Clayton, Elisabeth De Fontenay
Private Equity For All: The Paradoxical Push To Democratize Private Markets, William W. Clayton, Elisabeth De Fontenay
Duke Law Journal
The recent push to open private equity and other private assets to retail investors represents one of the most profound changes to U.S. capital markets in decades. This "retailization" effort is often framed as an overdue democratization of superior investment opportunities. Indeed, private equity has long been viewed as special, both for its market-beating returns and its success in making companies more profitable. Yet it has historically been off-limits to retail investors.
This Article argues that the push to democratize private equity is subject to a glaring paradox: Expanding access to private equity undermines the very benefits that access aims …

Access In Teaching Stem Subjects To The Blind, Ashley E. Neybert
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
There are still many gaps in the literature regarding the difficulties faced by instructors of students who are blind and low vision and who teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. We surveyed 26 K-12 STEM teachers about accessible materials they are aware of versus which accessible materials they use in their classrooms, their thoughts on how common challenges identified in the extent literature affect them in their teaching, and their perspective on how much extra time may be required for blind and low vision students (if any) to effectively learn STEM subjects.

Using Digital Engagement Methods To Balance Democracy And Efficiency In Public Decision Making, Catherine Zietse
Using Digital Engagement Methods To Balance Democracy And Efficiency In Public Decision Making, Catherine Zietse
PNHA Review
At the bedrock of our democratic society is the active participation of everyday people in shaping public affairs. Local governments seek to build inclusive and democratic processes for decision making, while at the same time being good stewards of scarce resources to efficiently address immediate needs of the community. This paper explores the role of digital engagement in balancing democracy and efficiency in public decision-making by looking at both theory and practice. Academic literature and case studies from the field show that technology and digital engagement platforms do not circumvent the risks of traditional engagement methods but provide both opportunities …
