Electronic Cigarette Use And Clinically Assessed Oral Mucosal Lesions In Adults: A Systematic Review, Kevin K. Zhang, Kamran Awan
Annual Research Symposium
Abstract
Background: Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use among adults has risen rapidly over the past decade, prompting concern about potential adverse effects on oral health. Although the systemic consequences of e-cigarette exposure have been increasingly studied, effects on the oral mucosa remain less clearly defined. Existing investigations describe a range of oral mucosal findings, but reported outcomes and assessment methods are inconsistent, making it difficult to draw clear conclusions.
Objectives: To systematically review the available evidence examining the association between electronic cigarette use and oral mucosal lesions/alterations in adults, compared with non-users or other tobacco exposure groups.
Methods: A systematic literature …
Comparing Fall Risk And Functional Recovery After Hip, Knee, Or Spine Surgery In Older Adults, Elias D. Wali
Comparing Fall Risk And Functional Recovery After Hip, Knee, Or Spine Surgery In Older Adults, Elias D. Wali
Annual Research Symposium
Abstract Purpose: Falls in older adults significantly affect mobility, independence, and quality of life. Fear of falling affects nearly half of older adults, including those without prior falls. Pain, reported by approximately 18.7 million U.S. older adults, contributes to reduced activity and has been linked to fear of falling through mobility limitation, psychological effects, and balance impairment. Despite this, nationally representative studies examining postoperative fall risk and functional recovery across hip, knee, and spine surgeries remain limited. This study examines associations between surgery history, demographic and socioeconomic factors, fall risk, and functional recovery among older adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study …

Propofol In Chronic Cannabis Users: A Mechanistic Link To Cannabinoid Hyperemesis?, Jonmark I. Dolendo, Sonia Frick, Jia Q. Yang, Brad A. Haubrich
Annual Research Symposium
Purpose: Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) is characterized by cyclic nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain in chronic cannabis users, often relieved by exposure to hot water. Propofol, a widely used GABAergic anesthetic with antiemetic properties, has paradoxically been implicated in exacerbating hyperemetic episodes in some cannabis users. With the growing legalization of marijuana and social acceptance to its recreational use it is believed that this phenomenon will be more ubiquitous to clinicians. This review aims to investigate the mechanistic and clinical evidence linking propofol administration to CHS and to summarize strategies for prevention, diagnosis, and management.

Moving For Minutes! A Sustainable Self-Care Strategy In An Academic Workplace, Jan Michaelis, Ellen D'Errico
Moving For Minutes! A Sustainable Self-Care Strategy In An Academic Workplace, Jan Michaelis, Ellen D'Errico
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
The “6+1” standards of a healthy work environment in an academic setting, are described by Saunders et al. (2021) and include skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, authentic leadership, and self-care (the “plus one” standard). However, achieving work-life balance for faculty and staff at the school of nursing, who work long hours, can be challenging, often leading to the neglect of regular exercise, a crucial element of personal health and wellness. To address this issue, a staff member initiated the “Moving for Minutes" program (M4M) in 2009, aimed at encouraging weekly physical activities such as walking, …

Annual Research Symposium
This poster presents a rare case of chondroid syringoma with ossification, representing only the ninth reported instance of bone formation within this adnexal tumor. The report describes a slowly enlarging facial nodule in a 34-year-old male, detailing clinical presentation, surgical excision, and histopathologic findings. Microscopy revealed characteristic epithelial cords and tubules within a myxoid stroma, along with mature lamellar bone formation, confirming the diagnosis. The case expands the known morphologic spectrum of chondroid syringomas and highlights the importance of considering this entity in the differential diagnosis of benign facial masses, particularly when unusual features such as ossification are present.

Organizational Approach To Collecting, Monitoring, Analyzing Workplace Violence Data And Providing Support To Staff Affected, Brandi C. Bosley, Amanda L. Schweng, Shanan K. Sims
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Significance – Healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than other industries, and 73% all non-fatal workplace violence injuries resulting in missed days of work occur in healthcare settings (OSHA, 2021). WPV costs facilities an estimated $428.5 million nationwide (Van Des Bos et al., 2017). WPV is attributed to burnout, decreased employee morale, increased absenteeism, and increased staff turnover, negatively impacting patient care (Somani et al., 2021).
Background: The organization is a Level 1 Trauma hospital with 573 beds. The Workplace Violence Committee formed in 2018 in response to growing workplace violence incidents. The committee adopted …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Utilization of clinical instructors has always been vital to support academic achievement of nursing students. Hiring full time nursing faculty is challenging for a multitude of reasons and most faculty are stretched thin. According to Ross, Dunker, Duprey, Parson, & Humphries (2022), it is estimated that 75,000 qualified nursing students are denied admission annually due to a shortage of nurse faculty and clinical sites. In the last year, one West Texas nursing program had a decrease in nursing faculty and relied heavily on clinical instructors. Although clinical instructors are required to hold a master’s degree in nursing, most are not …
