Study The Effect Of Climate Change On Barley Crop (Hordeum Vulgare L.) And Improving Its Productivity Through Municipal Treated Wastewater Utilization, Wasef A. Alzayadneh

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Climate change presents a complex risk to crop productivity, with elevated temperatures, rising CO2 and UV-B enhancement profoundly impacting growth. Although the effects of individual stressors are well-documented, limited information is available regarding the combined effects of variables such as elevated CO₂ (eCO2), UV-B radiation, and elevated temperature (eT). This knowledge gap is especially critical for major cereal crops such as barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), which ranks fourth in global production and serves as a valuable source of forage for livestock. However, traditional forage production is unsustainable in arid regions, where water shortage and extreme weather conditions are present, as …

Forest Characteristics And Avian Community Differences Among Cerulean Warblers (Setophaga Cerulea) Use Types, Dustin Kohler

ATU Scholars Symposium

Avian species are often used to measure the health of an ecosystem, in part because the specific forest structure can significantly impact the avian community. A heterogeneous landscape can support a more diverse avian community and benefit specialist species like the Cerulean Warbler (Setophaga cerulea), a rapidly declining, neotropical migrant that can be found in large deciduous forests. The Ozark Mountains of northwestern Arkansas represent a small core area for the species, but at all sites in the upland Ozarks where Cerulean Warbler research has been conducted, there are fewer individuals than there were twenty years ago; some …

Proxyconnec: A Lora-Based Proactive Safety Communication System For Off-Grid Environments, Shruti Bhandari, Roza Shaimurat

ATU Scholars Symposium

Remote environments lacking cellular or satellite coverage present significant safety challenges. ProxyConnec was developed as a point-to-point communication system using ESP32 microcontrollers and REYAX RYLR998 LoRa modules to provide off-grid monitoring.

The system implements a proactive heartbeat model in which a beacon device transmits a signal every 1,000 milliseconds. A base station monitors this connection using a 5,000 millisecond watchdog timer. If communication is interrupted, the system immediately triggers audible and visual alerts. Unlike conventional tracking devices that depend on manual SOS activation, this design treats unexpected signal loss as a potential safety event.

The manufacturer rates the selected LoRa …

Computational Approaches To Laser Alignment And Phase Correction, Joseph E. Temple Apr 2026

Computational Approaches To Laser Alignment And Phase Correction, Joseph E. Temple

ATU Scholars Symposium

The goal of our work is to automate the tedious and delicate process of optical alignment (rotating mirrors, shifting lenses by millimeters, and iterating endlessly) in the context of generating vortex beams from a Gaussian laser beam. We create vortex beams by illuminating a digital hologram displayed on a spatial light modulator (SLM). Two main issues arise: misalignment and phase imperfections in the input beam. If the beam does not pass directly through the center of the SLM, or if it deviates from an ideal Gaussian profile, the resulting vortex beam becomes distorted.

Last semester, we developed two methods to …

Interacting Dark Energy Models And The Cosmic Coincidence Problem, Gunner W. Hodges Apr 2026

Interacting Dark Energy Models And The Cosmic Coincidence Problem, Gunner W. Hodges

ATU Scholars Symposium

Cosmological models are a tool used to understand the mysterious nature of dark energy and dark matter by predicting how these dark sector components have shaped the expansion of the universe. The cosmic coincidence problem stems from the present day densities of dark energy and matter sharing very similar magnitudes when previously we expect a much larger difference in orders of magnitude. The current best-fit model, ΛCDM , assumes dark energy is non-interacting; however, assuming that dark energy instead does interact could serve to alleviate this cosmic tension. We define an interaction where we relate the density of dark energy …

Automatic Three Phase Balancing In Utility Applications, Ryan Morris Apr 2026
