Ehr Integration Of A Violence Risk Tool To Promote Safer Work Environments, Kirk Bradford Apr 2026

Ehr Integration Of A Violence Risk Tool To Promote Safer Work Environments, Kirk Bradford

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

In October 2022, a tragic act of workplace violence within our health system highlighted the need for a proactive, data-driven approach to staff safety. Workplace violence impacts nearly one in four nurses each year (McCollum et al., 2024); yet most organizations lack an objective tool to predict and prevent such incidents. The goal of this project was to implement and evaluate a systematic, evidence-based screening process to improve early risk detection and foster safer clinical environments—aligned with the AACN Healthy Work Environment Standard of Effective Decision-Making (AACN, 2016).

A multidisciplinary team of nursing, informatics, and security leaders integrated a modified …

Mitigating Burnout Syndrome Through Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Rachel Kathryn Fajardo Apr 2026

Mitigating Burnout Syndrome Through Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Rachel Kathryn Fajardo

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Burnout Syndrome (BOS) continues to affect critical care nurses, resulting in emotional exhaustion, disengagement, and threats to patient safety [1–4]. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project evaluated the impact of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) toolkit on BOS among nurses in a rural intensive care unit. Using a pre-post quality improvement design, baseline burnout was measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS-MP) and custom Likert-scale surveys administered at three time points [5]. A convenience sample of ten nurses participated in asynchronous and live sessions supported by weekly education and QR-linked resources. The MBSR toolkit …

From Evidence To Action: Promoting Civility For Sustained Healthy Work Environments, Nicole Lynne Demeter, Erik Carter Apr 2026

From Evidence To Action: Promoting Civility For Sustained Healthy Work Environments, Nicole Lynne Demeter, Erik Carter

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Incivility and bullying erode psychological safety, belonging, and professional formation in nursing education (Ehsani et al., 2023). Harms fall disproportionately on historically marginalized students (Park & Kang, 2020) and occur across student–student, faculty–student, and faculty–faculty interactions (Clark & Kenski, 2022). Many students normalize bullying as a “rite of passage” (Hale & Phillips, 2019), further undermining respect (Birks et al., 2019). Reflecting the urgency, the ANA’s 2025 Code of Ethics links nurse well-being to ethical practice (ANA, 2025).

Purpose: Translate evidence into practice to reduce incivility within the College of Nursing through coordinated policy, reporting, education, and faculty development aligned …

Protecting Nursing Breaks To Reduce Burnout And Support A Healthy Work Environment, Jennifer Fabian, Hannah Kayuha Reed, Isabel Romero-Agsalda, Jachelle Braithwaite Pires, Lindsey Vandolah, Marni B. Kellogg

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Nurses on inpatient units frequently experience interrupted or missed meal breaks due to coworker requests, phone calls, alarm systems (such as equipment alarms and call lights), inadequate staffing to cover breaks, and a lack of a coordinated shift plan for meal breaks. Repeatedly forfeiting protected break time contributes to physical and mental fatigue and is a modifiable workplace stressor. Left unaddressed, this stressor may progress into burnout, a significant occupational risk for nurses.

Burnout in nurses has been defined as a gradual state of physical and psychological exhaustion characterized by anger, indifference, and reduced effectiveness, often accompanied by depression and …

Enhancing Nurse Preparedness And Safety In Home Health Through Simulation For Nursing Students, D'Ana Brooks, Christina Matousek, Kelli-Ann Mancini Apr 2026

Enhancing Nurse Preparedness And Safety In Home Health Through Simulation For Nursing Students, D'Ana Brooks, Christina Matousek, Kelli-Ann Mancini

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: Nurses working in the home health setting often work alone in isolated and uncontrolled environments, which increases their risk of experiencing violence or unsafe situations. Recent home health nurse experiences suggest that the severity of safety events has increased in violence and in some cases, led to death. In a recent survey by National Nurses United (2023), eight out of ten nurses reported experiencing workplace violence, including verbal abuse, physical threats, and being pinched or scratched.4 Nursing curriculum does not consistently focus on education for the home health setting or overall nurse safety, calling for a re-examination of …

Caring For Dying Patients: Implications For Wellbeing Of Registered Nurses, Danna Leigh Curcio Apr 2026

Caring For Dying Patients: Implications For Wellbeing Of Registered Nurses, Danna Leigh Curcio

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Of the 4.7 million registered nurses working in the United States, 55% work in acute care hospitals, and one-quarter will leave the profession within five years (Smiley et al., 2023). To fill these vacancies novice nurses will be hired, caring for the sick and dying. This can be a challenge affecting wellbeing and creating diminished quality patient and family centered care (Akpinar et al., 2025). Domains, guidelines, and criteria were created addressing the emotional impact of caring for the dying while sustaining resilience, self-care, support, and adaptation (NCPQPC, 2018). Additionally, ten domains were developed (AACN, 2021), one aimed at commitment …

Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe Apr 2026

Uscis-Grounded Ai: Preventing Hallucinations In Immigration Legal Services, Hephzibah Igwe

ONU Student Research Colloquium

Artificial intelligence chatbots increasingly provide legal information to consumers, but AI "hallucinations" (confidently stated but incorrect responses) pose serious risks in immigration law. Incorrect information about USCIS forms, fees, processing times, or filing procedures can result in visa denials, deportation proceedings, or permanent bars to entry.

This research presents a novel "source-grounded AI" system that eliminates hallucinations in immigration legal information. Rather than relying solely on large language models (LLMs) trained on general internet data, the system uses USCIS.gov as the primary source of truth for all operational data including current forms, fees, processing times, filing addresses, and policy updates. …

A Century Of Industrialization, In A Decade: Operation Bootstrap And Puerto Rican Migration To Ohio, Pablo M. Frontera-Mendez Apr 2026

A Century Of Industrialization, In A Decade: Operation Bootstrap And Puerto Rican Migration To Ohio, Pablo M. Frontera-Mendez

ONU Student Research Colloquium

We have all heard the story of the Rust Belt, where it was once America’s heartland but has long been abandoned by the manufacturing sector. What if there were a place in the United States that, instead of closing plants, was building them? Puerto Rico, a US territory since 1898, had struggled to diversify its economy for half a century. Then, almost as if by magic, the island embarked on the most ambitious industrialization program the world had ever seen. The island would lift itself out of poverty no matter the cost. The Puerto Rican economy experienced growth in every …

A Trojan Attack On Tdma Synchronization In Energy-Harvesting Wireless Networks, Ethan Berei Apr 2026

A Trojan Attack On Tdma Synchronization In Energy-Harvesting Wireless Networks, Ethan Berei

ONU Student Research Colloquium

This paper investigates a Trojan attack targeting the time-division multiple access (TDMA) synchronization mechanism in single-hop energy-harvesting wireless networks. The attack compromises a single node, which subtly skews its transmission timing to operate outside its assigned time slot, causing localized transmission overlaps and triggering repeated network-wide resynchronization events. This behavior shortens the synchronization interval, significantly increases control-plane traffic, and leads to higher energy consumption and delay in energy-constrained networks. The attack is modeled within a finite state machine (FSM) framework and experimentally evaluated under varying energy-harvesting conditions. Experimental results show that the number of synchronization events can increase by up …

Metabolomic Characterizations Of Hericium Erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. And Laricifomes Officinalis (Vill.) Kotl. & Pouzar Fungal Cultures, Kyle Meyer

Oxford ICSB

We present metabolomic characterizations of Hericium erinaceus (Bull.) Pers. (lion’s mane, yamabushitake, etc.), and Laricifomes officinalis (Vill.) Kotl. & Pouzar (syn. Fomitopsis officinalis; agarikon, eburiko, etc.) fungal cultures by high resolution orbitrap mass spectrometry and HPLC-DAD. Primary focus has been applied to the cultivation of these species on brown rice, Oryza sativa L., as a solid substrate.   In the case of H. erinaceus, we have observed key differences in lipid metabolite profiles over a 28-day fermentation time series suggesting possible grain lipid feedstocks for fungal-derived lipid production, providing clear evidence of substrate biotransformation.   For L. officinalis cultures, we observe distinct …

Lessons From The Least: Healing-Centered Discipline Reform For Neurodivergent Youth In U.S. Public Schools, Deborah Brooks Apr 2026

Lessons From The Least: Healing-Centered Discipline Reform For Neurodivergent Youth In U.S. Public Schools, Deborah Brooks

Liberty University Research Week

Disproportionate disciplinary outcomes for neurodivergent students—particularly those with autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities—represent a systemic failure of American education policy. Although students with disabilities constitute 17% of the K–12 population, they account for 29% of out-of-school suspensions and 21% of expulsions, disparities compounded by race, gender, and socioeconomic disadvantage. These patterns feed directly into the school-to-prison pipeline, a documented trajectory linking exclusionary discipline to elevated risk of juvenile justice involvement. Existing legal protections under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), as well as trauma-informed care frameworks, …

When The Algorithm Disciples: Recentering Discipleship In An Ai Saturated Age, Laronda Perrien-Massey Apr 2026

When The Algorithm Disciples: Recentering Discipleship In An Ai Saturated Age, Laronda Perrien-Massey

Liberty University Research Week

As Artificial Intelligence becomes an increasingly prevalent voice in everyday life, recent research from Barna Group and Gloo reveals that nearly one in three U.S. adults considers spiritual advice from AI as trustworthy as counsel from a pastor, with even higher rates among Gen Z and Millennials. This study hypothesizes that most congregants lack a theological framework for evaluating AI-generated spiritual content, and that a structured, church-based discipleship intervention will produce measurable improvements in digital discernment, perceived spiritual growth, and relational connectedness.

Prevention Vs. Treatment On The Global Stage: How National Priorities In Public Health And Healthcare Shape International Power And Health Outcomes, Sophie I. Antell

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

National approaches to health are shaped by political priorities, institutional structures, and global positioning. This project examines how countries balance investments in public health (population-level prevention) versus healthcare (individual-level treatment), and how these choices influence both domestic health outcomes and international power. Using Taiwan and the United States as comparative case studies, the research explores how differing health system models reflect broader political identities, shape global health credibility, and affect participation in international health governance.

Taiwan's strong public health infrastructure, effective disease surveillance, and active medical diplomacy have contributed to its reputation as a capable global health actor, despite its …

The Role Of Emotional Intelligence And Defense Mechanisms In Processing Childhood Experiences And Their Impact On Adulthood, Lauren Williams

Liberty University Research Week

Early childhood relationships significantly influence developmental and relational functioning across the lifespan. Emotional intelligence has been associated with healthier relational outcomes through increased awareness of self and others. Variability in childhood experiences may contribute to the development of defense mechanisms that shape how individuals process relational memories and regulate emotional distress in adulthood. Limited research has examined how emotional intelligence and defense mechanisms interact to influence adults’ retrospective processing of childhood experiences, including attachment, rumination, and motivation. The present quantitative correlation study examined the relationships among emotional intelligence, defense mechanisms, childhood attachment experience, rumination, and motivation in a sample of …

Determination Of Kratom Alkaloids In Botanical Products Using Multi-Criteria Lc–Ms Analysis, Mengliang Zhang Apr 2026

Determination Of Kratom Alkaloids In Botanical Products Using Multi-Criteria Lc–Ms Analysis, Mengliang Zhang

Oxford ICSB

Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a botanical product widely sold in the United States as powders, capsules, tablets, gummies, and beverages. Natural kratom leaves primarily contain mitragynine (MG) as the dominant alkaloid. However, an increasing number of commercial products contain elevated levels of the more potent opioid alkaloid 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and the semi-synthetic compound mitragynine pseudoindoxyl (MGP). Reliable analytical identification of these compounds is critical for dietary supplement testing, regulatory monitoring, and public health protection. However, kratom matrices contain numerous structurally related alkaloids and isomeric compounds that complicate mass spectrometric identification and may lead to false positive assignments. The objective of …

Ginsenoside-Based Theranostic Agents For Alzheimer's Disease: Implications For Brain Penetration, Cellular Uptake, And Anti-Aging Effects, Hak Soo Choi

Oxford ICSB

Red ginseng and its bioactive constituents, ginsenosides, have long been associated with neuroprotection and anti-aging effects, yet their limited ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and poorly characterized biodistribution have hindered therapeutic translation. To address this, we developed a library of “ginsenoprobes” by conjugating major red ginseng components (Rg1, Rg3, Rb1, Rh2, Rk1, Rg5) and red ginseng extract (RGE) to a zwitterionic near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore (ZW800-1C), enabling real-time tracking of their fate in vitro and in vivo. All ginsenoprobes were purified to >95% homogeneity via preparative HPLC and rigorously characterized for optical properties, including molar extinction coefficients and dye-to-ginsenoside …

Microhabitat Usage And Symbiotic Dynamics Of A Shell-Dwelling Cichlid (Neolamprologus Similis), Camden Haines, Hanley Rooker Apr 2026

Microhabitat Usage And Symbiotic Dynamics Of A Shell-Dwelling Cichlid (Neolamprologus Similis), Camden Haines, Hanley Rooker

Liberty University Research Week

Aquatic ecosystems promote variable microhabitats which in turn support dynamic biotic assemblages. One such microhabitat involves gastropod shells and the dependence on these microhabitats for breeding success in shell-dwelling cichlids native to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Once a microhabitat is selected by a male-female pair, both parents will care for the nest and eggs until the young are developed enough to leave the shell. This research aims to quantify how parental division of care influences offspring quality and developmental timing in the shell-dwelling cichlid Neolamprologus similis. Mating pairs of N. similis will be introduced to study tanks to assess …
