Educational Synergism, Moses S. Koch Apr 1967

Educational Synergism, Moses S. Koch

Space Congress® Proceedings

Great Britain and France are combining their efforts to manufacture a supersonic transport plane, the Concord.

Morris Keeton, Academic Vice President of Antioch, speaking at the Association of American Colleges meeting in Los Angeles in January predicted that strong four year colleges would form partnerships with each other to do things they could not afford on their own.

Title III of the Higher Education Act provides federal support for institutional consortiums and for cooperative arrangement between a college and almost any other type of organization including businesses and industry. This act is predicated on the knowledge that two or more …

Research Development At The High School Level, David D. Woodbridge Apr 1967

Research Development At The High School Level, David D. Woodbridge

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Cooperative College-School Science Program (CCSS) is part of the school system improvement program of the National Science Foundation. All programs sponsored by CCSS must be aimed at improving course content of a school system or school through some new innovation. Programs must be designed such that they are not limited just to the education of teachers or pupils. Because of this requirement, every CCSS program is coordinated closely with the County or District school system.

All types of science projects are encompassed under the CCSS Program. Most of the programs are a summer institute followed by occasional seminars with …

Simulation Of A Large Scale Data Reduction System, Kingsley E. Forry Apr 1967

Simulation Of A Large Scale Data Reduction System, Kingsley E. Forry

Space Congress® Proceedings

Over the next few years, one of the great challenges mankind will be facing is the design and management of increasingly complex systems. Simulation models of these systems will play a major role in meeting this challenge expeditiously and economically. As an example of the use of such techniques this paper describes briefly a Monte Carlo simulation of the Air Force Eastern Test Range data reduction computer system. This system included an IBM 7094/7044/1301 configuration called POD for "Process on Demand." It was installed in mid-1964 replacing a 7094/1401 computer system. Additional components of the system included two remaining 1401 …

Hand-Held Electron Beam Gun For In-Space Welding, F. R. Schollharnmer Apr 1967

Hand-Held Electron Beam Gun For In-Space Welding, F. R. Schollharnmer

Space Congress® Proceedings

The usefulness of electron beams for heating materials has long been known and recognized. It was only within the past few years , however, that the usefulness of these beams for cutting and welding metallic materials was realized. The most important single factor in using this high energy source for metals fabrication is the ability to contain all the available energy in the beam into an extremely small area. When the power in a beam of electrons is spread widely over the surface of a material , the specific power is not sufficiently great to produce melting ; however , …

Solid Propellant Power Systems For Normal And Emergency Space Operations, Frank B. Pollard, Edgar Shurtleff Apr 1967

Solid Propellant Power Systems For Normal And Emergency Space Operations, Frank B. Pollard, Edgar Shurtleff

Space Congress® Proceedings

The ability of man to function safely both inside and out of his spacecraft will become even more critical after his pioneering flights such as Gemini and Apollo are completed. As greater numbers of astronauts make flights of long duration, survival may well be a function of a number of extravehicular activities such as routine vehicle inspection, emergency maintenance and repair. erection of structures and platforms, and rescue operations. Current systems remain bulky, heavy, and a possible source of hazard and malfunction. The solid-propellant space power systems examined here are small, light, manually or automatically operated, and have the capability …

Opportunities For Professional Upgrading Of Quality And Reliability Personnel In The Cape Kennedy Area, Richard G. Stein Apr 1967

Opportunities For Professional Upgrading Of Quality And Reliability Personnel In The Cape Kennedy Area, Richard G. Stein

Space Congress® Proceedings

Continuous professional growth of each individual becomes mandatory in order to meet the challenge of 1970 . This continuous individual growth in most professions is being made possible through such activities as seminars, conventi ons, space congresses, but even more so by courses offered through universities and colleges.

Recent activities of The American Society for Quality Control, Education and Training Institute are providing some opportunities for professional upgrading. The most recent of these activities is the professional certificate program in Quality Engineering . In addition to this program, there exists extensive interest and participation in specialized training institutes, conventions and …

An Application Of The Computer To Planning, John P. Michalski Apr 1967

An Application Of The Computer To Planning, John P. Michalski

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper discusses a simulation model which was developed to provide the National Range Division with a method for planning the National fleet of instrumented ships to support a wide variety of tests of many missile and space vehicle programs. The model simulates in a realistic way the manner and frequency with which missiles with their associated support requirements appear on a launch schedule. Then it uses the launch schedule to impose a loading upon the range ships on a simulated real-time basis. Finally the model schedules the ships against this simulated workload, and both qualitative and quantitative estimates are …

The Continuing Education Of Public Officials In The Space Era, Huey B. Long Apr 1967

The Continuing Education Of Public Officials In The Space Era, Huey B. Long

Space Congress® Proceedings

Because of rapidly changing knowledge, technology, and urbanization there is a need for local public officials to increase their knowledge of government and to learn of new procedures to solve new problems. Private industry expects their personnel to continue to learn and these industries make provision for time and resources for their employees to continue to improve their skills. Local government has been lacking in this philosophy as well as lacking in the practical provision of time and resources for such activities.

However, a survey of public officials' continuing education activities in east central Florida revealed that an overwhelming majority …

Educational Synergism In The Space And Missile Industry, John Lane Apr 1967

Educational Synergism In The Space And Missile Industry, John Lane

Space Congress® Proceedings

Any synergistic relationship results in accomplishment of objectives by each participant greater than individual effort, and total accomplishment otherwise impossible. There is nothing new about the synergistic relationship. We see it occasionally in nature, in family life, and in the field of marketing. In time of national emergency it flowers, and vast efforts are integrated to produce B-29s, atom bombs, space or oceanographic programs. In one sense synergy can be compared to alloying of metals where the resultant alloy has properties superior to the base metal or any of its additives. If the concept of synergy proves productive of stronger, …

An Approach Toward Increasing The Data Rate Of Future Deep Space Communication Systems, S. N. Chen Apr 1967

An Approach Toward Increasing The Data Rate Of Future Deep Space Communication Systems, S. N. Chen

Space Congress® Proceedings

An indirect approach toward increasing the data rate of a deep-space communication system involving the use of a relay satellite was studied. A simple frequency translation type repeater was assumed for the re lay satellite. In addition, the repeater was said to possess the characteristics of constant out put with signal - to -noise power sharing and also suppression effects due to the repeater's inherent nonlinearity. The data rate capability of the indirect approach was compared with that of the direct one (no relay satellite) . In the comparison the earth terminal characteristics were assumed to be the same for …

Iridium Coatings For The Protection Of Graphite Re-Entry Structures, T. R. Wright, J. D. Weyand, D. E. Kizer Apr 1967

Iridium Coatings For The Protection Of Graphite Re-Entry Structures, T. R. Wright, J. D. Weyand, D. E. Kizer

Space Congress® Proceedings

Because of its high strength-to-weight ratio and other desirable features, graphite is desirable for use as structural components that are to be exposed to a high-temperature environment. At elevated temperatures, however, graphite reacts with oxidizing atmospheres, and smooth surfaces having specific engineering properties are degraded into eroded surfaces of lower efficiency.

It has been demonstrated that iridium can be used to protect graphite in air at temperatures to 3600 F for 1 hour or more. Battelle has been conducting a program for the Air Force Materials Laboratory to study the application of iridium and iridium-alloy coatings to graphite, based on …
