Frequency And Duration Of Thunderstorms In The Cape Kennedy Area, Charles J. Neumann Apr 1969

Frequency And Duration Of Thunderstorms In The Cape Kennedy Area, Charles J. Neumann

Space Congress® Proceedings

This report presents a detailed statistical analysis of thunderstorm occurrence at or in the immediate vicinity of Cape Kennedy, Florida based on 13 years of record through the year 1967. Empirical thunderstorm probabilities are derived for any given time of the day, for any day of the year for time periods ranging up to seven days duration. Presented also are data on multiple thunderstorm occurrence on single days, probability of thunderstorm non- occurrence, thunderstorm duration, "runs" of thunderstorm days and conditional thunderstorm probabilities.

Absorption Of Ultraviolet Radiation In The Reflected Region Of A Shock Tube, Ronald D. Evans Apr 1969

Absorption Of Ultraviolet Radiation In The Reflected Region Of A Shock Tube, Ronald D. Evans

Space Congress® Proceedings

Absorption coefficients of high temperature air have been measured photoelectrically over the temperature range from 2000 to 4350°K and wavelength range 2300 to 3000A. The experiments were performed within 1cm of the end wall in the reflected region of a pressure driven shock tube. A high pressure mercury-xenon arc lamp, operating in a continuous mode, was used as the background source for the probing radiation. The results agree well with theoretical calculations and existing experimental data where comparisons could be made.

Sensitivity And Optimization Theory For Launch Vehicle Attitude Control System Synthesis, William A. Walter, Fred O. Simions Apr 1969

Sensitivity And Optimization Theory For Launch Vehicle Attitude Control System Synthesis, William A. Walter, Fred O. Simions

Space Congress® Proceedings

In the design of a launch vehicle attitude control system two factors of major concern are the bending moments experienced during flight and the terminal drift. Excursions in these system variables are produced by winds, the most important of which occur during the period surrounding maximum dynamic pressure. Conventional design approaches assume a linear control law and determine gain values and shaping networks based on a great many complex and interacting considerations (e.g.,bending, sloshing, the nature of winds, separation dynamics, etc.) in order to meet bending moment and drift requirements. The result is a linear control law with gains which …

A Real-Time Fisheries Satellite System, Robert E. Stevenson Apr 1969

A Real-Time Fisheries Satellite System, Robert E. Stevenson

Space Congress® Proceedings

The capability of surveying the world ocean each day to follow the distribution of surface temperatures, currents, water-mass boundaries, and areas of vertical water motion, provides the synoptic oceanography needed for real-time fishery location. By continuous, environmental monitoring, deviations from the normal can be known, and forecasting the fishable population of a given fishery can be a reality.

Space Oceanography -Applications And Benefits, E. E. Ludwick Apr 1969

Space Oceanography -Applications And Benefits, E. E. Ludwick

Space Congress® Proceedings

Information/data gathering requirements over the ocean in support of these objectives include synopticity (quality of affording a general view of the world), aerial coverage, and real time data collection and processing. This paper will show that existing and planned space technology has unique advantages for satisfying these requirements and, hence has great potential for furthering national oceanic goals.

To begin with, a brief review of the information/ data gathering requirements in support of national oceanic objectives is given to provide a basis on which to judge the capabilities and advantages of space technology in this activity.

Next, applicable space technology …

Edusat -An Educational Television Satellite System For The United States, Emil Steinhardt Apr 1969

Edusat -An Educational Television Satellite System For The United States, Emil Steinhardt

Space Congress® Proceedings

The advent of earth orbiting satellites has brought us the capability to distribute television to large audiences quickly, easily, and economically. Although early television distribution satellites required large ground receivers, proposals have now been made for satellite systems requiring only small, comparatively inexpensive receivers. In the future, homes throughout a nation may receive television programming directly from a satellite through use of small outdoor antennas connected to conventional television sets.

Almost as soon as the capability to have such a system was recognized, its use to distribute educational television to mass audiences was suggested. To date, many studies have been …

The Unforeseen Background Of Space Achievements, Gustav E. Lundquist Apr 1969

The Unforeseen Background Of Space Achievements, Gustav E. Lundquist

Space Congress® Proceedings

The public is well informed on the many contributions to society which have been made by space systems in the fields of communications, navigation, weather observations, etc.

It is much less informed on the development testing programs which are basic and essential to the success of many of those space systems, manned or unmanned. A large number of space environmental simulation chambers exist throughout the nation owned by government agencies and the aerospace industry. Research performed since the beginning of the space age has made the design, construction and successful operation of these space chambers possible. The USAF has been …

Evaluation Of Instructional Monographs In University And Industrial Use, Kenneth A. Mecollom Apr 1969

Evaluation Of Instructional Monographs In University And Industrial Use, Kenneth A. Mecollom

Space Congress® Proceedings

The difficulty of keeping abreast of new technology with the rate at which it is being created is proving to be physically impossible as well as an inefficient use of engineer's time. The NASA Pilot Program in Instructional Monographs has been conducted at Oklahoma State University" since June, 1966, with an objective of providing up-to-date instructional material derived from current research as rapidly and as efficiently as possible for use in engineering education.

An Instructional Monograph is designed to be used by a teacher or engineer without undue reference to additional material. The amount of material is normally adjusted to …

Satellite Communications To Mobile Terminals -A Forecast Of Needs And Techniques, Quintus C. Wilson Apr 1969

Satellite Communications To Mobile Terminals -A Forecast Of Needs And Techniques, Quintus C. Wilson

Space Congress® Proceedings

Economic pressures and technical developments lead to an international satellite communications and surveillance system satisfying the needs of many mobile users, especially aircraft. The dominant need is to provide three-dimensional surveillance of air space around airports. The large number of carrier and general aircraft requires the satellite system and its ground control facility to carry the burden of providing adequate link margins and position computation.

A New Documentation System For The Mississippi Test Facility, Richard D. Harlow Apr 1969

A New Documentation System For The Mississippi Test Facility, Richard D. Harlow

Space Congress® Proceedings

Lost--lost in a maze — some of the finest technical minds in the space program hampered and confused by the labrinyth of disorganized, unreliable documentation.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as a vital part of its Apollo Program mission of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely within this decade, authorized the construction of the Mississippi Test Facility (MTF). This facility was designed to captive test fire the first and second stages of the Apollo moon rocket--the Saturn V. The construction and subsequent activation of MTF was accomplished thru the Corps of Engineers, who, as …

At angles of attack, the problem of predicting the …

Large Solar Arrays -The Emerging Space Power Workhorse, J. E. Boretz Apr 1969

Large Solar Arrays -The Emerging Space Power Workhorse, J. E. Boretz

Space Congress® Proceedings

The solar array/secondary battery system has emerged as the space power "workhorse". Previously considered only for applications of up to 1 KW e , arrays of up to 3 KWe have been flown. Even larger arrays (10 KWe ) are being developed for Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) and the "wet" Orbital Workshop. An Earth Orbiting Space Laboratory (EOSL) , in the planning state for a 1973- 1975 flight readiness date, is considering the use of a 38 KWe solar array system. A 50 KW e array is under development for an electric propulsion mission and a 45 KWe array is …

Optimum Pre-Emphasis For Frequency Modulation Applications, Karl W. Merz Apr 1969

Optimum Pre-Emphasis For Frequency Modulation Applications, Karl W. Merz

Space Congress® Proceedings

Frequency modulated communication receiving systems that operate under varying RF input power conditions use a generalized preemphasis schedule that provides improved communication reception. In many instances, a receiving system operates with a stable RF input power. The optimization of FM systems, operating with a stable RF input power, requires the use of a particular pre-emphasis schedule.

Typical FM systems are not frequency modulated with a constant modulation index for all baseband frequencies. Instead, they use a signal pre-emphasis circuit at the transmitter and a complementary de-emphasis circuit at the receiver to optimize system operation. Preemphasis and de-emphasis are required whenever …
