Probing The Role Of The Interface On Activity And Regulation Of Gmdh, Nina Marie Garcia

Probing The Role Of The Interface On Activity And Regulation Of Gmdh, Nina Marie Garcia

Research Week

Interfaces between subunits play important roles in communicating activation or inhibition critical for an organism?s survival. The molecular mechanism of such interactions has not been fully understood. Glyoxysomal malate dehydrogenase (gMDH) is a homodimeric enzyme whose interface is thought to participate in regulation both by citrate and by substrate inhibition and a proposed reciprocating subunit mechanism of the overall catalytic cycle. The interface contains a variety of electrostatic and non-polar interactions. To understand the mechanism of subunit interactions we have probed the role of individual sidechains at the interface by site directed mutagenesis to determine the effects on stability, activity, …

Sike's Direct Protein-Protein Interactions, Timothy Marshall

Sike's Direct Protein-Protein Interactions, Timothy Marshall

Research Week

Suppressor of IKKepsilon (SIKE) is a naturally occurring protein in humans that becomes phosphorylated when double-stranded(ds) RNA is introduced into the body typically as part of a viral infection. The phosphorylation of SIKE occurs due to a signaling pathway induced by Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), that activates host defenses and leads to the interruption of the viral replication. Although the functions of SIKE are unknown, it has been shown that SIKE associates with cytoskeletal proteins. To determine the interactions that SIKE has with cytoskeletal proteins, In Vitro Precipitations (IVP) were performed. During the IVP experiments, the 6x His-tag labeled SIKE …

Reducing Single-Use Plastics In The Edgewater Community, Kathryn Mauery, Graham Clute, Sherelyn Venuso, Polina Cherepkova, Alexa Agra

Reducing Single-Use Plastics In The Edgewater Community, Kathryn Mauery, Graham Clute, Sherelyn Venuso, Polina Cherepkova, Alexa Agra

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Plastics are harmful to the environment due to its inability to biodegrade, turning into microplastics instead. Single use plastics, while convenient, can lead to long term environmental damage. Working with the Edgewater Environmental Coalition, we went to 10 different restaurants around Edgewater. We advocated for the removal of single use plastics from their operations and to find alternatives to replace them. We learned that the restaurants were open to change or already implementing eco-friendly alternatives, such as compostable containers and utensils for takeout. This indicates that the Edgewater community is willing to take part in initiatives concerning the environment.

Exploring Xenophagy: How Colon Epithelial Cells Combat Intracellular Bacterial Threats, Dikshanta V. Luitel, Anyssa Rodriguez, Sasmita Sahoo, Veerachandra K. Yemmireddy, Robert K. Dearth, Nirakar Vinaya Sahoo

Exploring Xenophagy: How Colon Epithelial Cells Combat Intracellular Bacterial Threats, Dikshanta V. Luitel, Anyssa Rodriguez, Sasmita Sahoo, Veerachandra K. Yemmireddy, Robert K. Dearth, Nirakar Vinaya Sahoo

Research Symposium

Background: The immune system utilizes macrophages and other specialized cells to counteract invading pathogens; however, the mechanisms of defense utilized by non-immune cells remain a subject of interest for research. The gastrointestinal tract, specifically the colon, is a location where host cells and pathogenic microorganisms interact frequently.

Methods: This study uses Listeria innocua, as a model system to investigate how colon epithelial cells fight these invading bacteria, specifically focusing on xenophagy as a potential protective mechanism. By using immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy and western blotting, we assessed the potential impact of L. innocua invasion on colon epithelial cells.

Results: Our …

Exploring The Anti-Cancer Potential Of Anthocyanins Via Autophagy Overactivation, Tripti Saini, Anyssa Rodriguez, Sumeet Chauhan, Sasmita Sahoo, Manish Tripathi, Robert K. Dearth, Subhash C. Chauhan, Nirakar Sahoo

Exploring The Anti-Cancer Potential Of Anthocyanins Via Autophagy Overactivation, Tripti Saini, Anyssa Rodriguez, Sumeet Chauhan, Sasmita Sahoo, Manish Tripathi, Robert K. Dearth, Subhash C. Chauhan, Nirakar Sahoo

Research Symposium

Background: Anthocyanins are natural plant pigments that give fruits and vegetables their colors. They are well known for their health benefits, such as antioxidant, anti inflammatory and anticancer properties. In recent years there has been an increased interest in using natural plant products to treat diseases. One specific anthocyanin called Dracorhodin derived from the fruit of Daemonorops draco (also known as 'dragons blood') has shown anticancer effects. However the precise molecular mechanisms through which Dracorhodin Perchlorate (DP) a derivative of Dracorhodin exerts its antitumor activities are still not fully understood. In this study we aimed to investigate whether DP can …

Carbon Monoxide Suppresses Heag1 Potassium Channels And Cell Growth In Liver Cancer, Anyssa A. Rodriguez, Aarya Tripathi, Rida Shareef, Subhash C. Chauhan, Nirakar Sahoo

Research Symposium

Background: Heme contains iron and porphyrin. It degrades into metabolites like biliverdin, carbon monoxide (CO), and bilirubin. High levels of these can be detrimental. However, at normal levels they may act as signaling molecules. One example is CO which comes from heme breakdown by heme oxygenase. Dysregulation of CO and heme metabolism has been linked to some cancers.

Methods: This study examined how external application of CO affects hEAG1 potassium channels and proliferation of Hepa 1 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. CO was introduced using a caged donor molecule called CORM-2, which releases controlled CO at the target site. hEAG1 activity …

Race Disparities In Pain Among Canadian Adults., Harry Alorgbey Sardina

Race Disparities In Pain Among Canadian Adults., Harry Alorgbey Sardina

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Pain has significant quality-of-life implications for adults. We aimed to identify racial disparities in pain among Canadian adults. These results are crucial to uncovering which population groups are disproportionately experiencing pain-related suffering in Canada.
