Nasa-Ksc's Earth Resources Benefits From Space Exploration, James M. Ragusa, Edward J. Hecker Apr 1974

Nasa-Ksc's Earth Resources Benefits From Space Exploration, James M. Ragusa, Edward J. Hecker

Space Congress® Proceedings

The purpose of this paper is to identify the nature and scope of earth resources activities at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Because of recent developments from space exploration, NASA and KSC have evolved an earth resources program which focuses on applied R&D activities of direct benefit to a variety of federal, state, and local users. The historical development of this program is traced, and several projects are identified with special emphasis on the use of sidelooking airborne radar in several Brevard County, Florida test areas.

Skylab Earth Resources, Verl R. Wilmarth Apr 1974

Skylab Earth Resources, Verl R. Wilmarth

Space Congress® Proceedings

The successful launch of Skylab on May 14, 1973, provided an unique space platform for study of the ocean, land and atmospheric phenomena of this planet earth. At an altitude of 234 nautical miles above the earth, the 100 ton experimental station orbited the earth every 93 minutes and repeats the same revolution every 5 days. In a near circular orbit, Skylab crossed major parts of the world's land masses and the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans between 50 north and 50 south latitudes.

During the 171 days in space, the nine crew members surveyed selected portions of this planet …

Navy's Undersea Technology Program: Marine Industries The Beneficiary, Edward Clausner Apr 1974

Navy's Undersea Technology Program: Marine Industries The Beneficiary, Edward Clausner

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Navy is the leading developer and user of undersea technology within the Federal government. This development is accomplished by a world wide network of laboratories and operational commands supported by contract efforts with civilian industry and academia.

Generally speaking, both Department of Defense and the commercial world attempt to maintain a three year competitive edge in hardware development. Accordingly, the successful developments which the Navy funds, regardless of the developing activity, are normally available for commercial exploitation within a relatively short space of time. As a matter of fact, about 80 per cent of the data and technology that …

Technology At Work For Television Meteorologists, Roy Leep Apr 1974

Technology At Work For Television Meteorologists, Roy Leep

Space Congress® Proceedings

During the next few minutes, I will take you on a visual tour of the WTVT Television Weather Service at Tampa, Florida. This may seem out of place at this meeting, but our service utilizes a vast array of weather equipment and communications not found in most TV stations. I plan to show you how such unique technology assists the meteorologist in his presentations and aids the viewer in better understanding the atmosphere.

The WTVT Weather Service was organized in 1956 with one meteorologist and a couple of teletype circuits. Today, it employs five full-time meteorologists plus an electronic technician. …

International Energy Problems And Environmental Policy, Michael J. Deutch Apr 1974

International Energy Problems And Environmental Policy, Michael J. Deutch

Space Congress® Proceedings

Energy — the ability to work — is essential to our economic welfare, productivity and our living standards. Before the recent oil embargo, it was said that a gallon of oil (or its equivalent in other forms of energy) provides power for the economic activity associated with two dollars of gross national product. However, the raw material cost of that oil at the point of production was only 7 percent of this gross national product value.

In the aftermath of the embargo, there is grave concern that the United States will become overly dependent on imports of oil, and will …
