Application Of Radar And Microwave Scattering To Ocean Wave Research, John W. Wright Apr 1976

Application Of Radar And Microwave Scattering To Ocean Wave Research, John W. Wright

Space Congress® Proceedings

The high data rate and advanced technology of modern radar systems make them attractive instruments for measuring the properties of random wave fields. When the objective is wave research, it is particularly important that the relation between wave field properties and radar output be clear and unequivocal. This is generally the case in the measurement of radar range (altimetry), the measurement of line-of-sight speeds (Doppler shift) and under those conditions where the scattered electromagnetic field is proportional to the surface displacement. The latter situation is that of first order Bragg scattering, in which case the influence of all waves outside …

Low Cost Space Operations: Empty Promise Or Future Reality, Michel Bader Apr 1976

Low Cost Space Operations: Empty Promise Or Future Reality, Michel Bader

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Space Shuttle has been heralded as the costeffective replacement for unmanned boosters. Many hardware -oriented studies have been performed, showing potential cost savings as compared to past operations. More recently, studies of management approaches and implementation procedures have indicated a potential for significant additional improvements in effectiveness. To what extent are these potential reductions in costs and complexities likely to be realized? To reorient the internal NASA thinking on hardware and procedures is but a small part of the problem. Is it possible for a government service to be efficient and self-supporting? These questions must be considered in the …

Welding At Kennedy Space Center, William E. Clautice Apr 1976

Welding At Kennedy Space Center, William E. Clautice

Space Congress® Proceedings

Welding plays a major role in the design, manufacture, and construction of the ground support equipment at the Kennedy Space Center.

Three applications of welding are described, i.e., an example of the structural welding of a girder in a mobile launcher (presently designated mobile launcher platform), an example of the repair welding of crawler/transporter shoes, and an example of the welding of the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen storage spheres and vacuum jacketed piping in the propel 1 ants system.

This welding technology was developed during the Apollo and earlier programs. It is now being applied to the Space Shuttle.

Marisat -A New Commercial Application Of Communications Satellite Technolgy, Edward J. Martin Apr 1976

Marisat -A New Commercial Application Of Communications Satellite Technolgy, Edward J. Martin

Space Congress® Proceedings

A new type of commercial satellite communications system called MARISAT is in its final stages of deployment for operational service beginning this year. This system will provide two different communications services by using two different types of communications repeaters on a single satellite. One service is dedicated to U.S. Navy requirements; the second service is the first commercial offering of maritime mobile satellite communications. Through this latter service the quality and reliability of commercial satellite communications will be extended to ships operating on the high seas. This will be the first step in the evolution of an international global maritime …

Lightning -Apollo To Shuttle, W. R. Durrett Apr 1976

Lightning -Apollo To Shuttle, W. R. Durrett

Space Congress® Proceedings

The lightning discharge that struck the Apollo 12 spacecraft thirty-six seconds after launch pointed up a whole series of problems that called out for answers if the Manned Space Program were to proceed with minimum impact to future missions and the crews that would fly them. This paper traces the history of lightning study by the Kennedy Space Center from then to now with particular emphasis on the potential problems that may arise in the process of getting ready for and carrying out the Space Shuttle Program.

Spacelab Operations Planning, Thomas J. Lee Apr 1976

Spacelab Operations Planning, Thomas J. Lee

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Spacelab design requirements which have been jointly developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) were strongly influenced by two primary considerations: (1) an attempt to satisfy as many of the low Earth orbit scientific and application user's requirements as practical utilizing the Shuttle launch vehicle; and (2) the necessity to have an efficient and economical mode of operation.

ESA has adhered to these considerations in their design and development program while NASA has adhered to these considerations in the planning for the Spacelab operations in the 1980's.

This paper presents a …

Photoelectrolysis Of Water By Solar Energy, D. I. Tchernev Apr 1976

Photoelectrolysis Of Water By Solar Energy, D. I. Tchernev

Space Congress® Proceedings

The direct conversion of solar energy to chemical fuel is possible by photodecomposition of water on semiconducting electrodes. We have observed 100% quantum efficiency for this reaction without corrosion of the electrodes. Projected costs of large area, thin film devices, utilizing existing technology, indicate that the hydrogen fuel can be cost competitive with other fuels now.

Spinoff 1976: A Bicentennial Report, Neii P. Ruzic Apr 1976

Spinoff 1976: A Bicentennial Report, Neii P. Ruzic

Space Congress® Proceedings

Today we educate the world via communications satellites. We prospect for oil with land-resource satellites. We keep the tundra frozen with spacecraft-derived heat pipes, making the Alaskan pipeline possible. Our damaged hearts are run by pacemakers, our ailments diagnosed by computer. Highways are grooved to prevent skidding. Bridges soon may be protected from corrosion. Better lubricants, more powerful solar cells, more efficiently designed railroad cars have been spun from space technology. Thousands of technical innovations are the payoff after 18 years in space.

Examples of how our national investment in space research and technology pays off will be described here, …

Applications Of Space-Electrophresis In Medicine, Milan Bier

Space Congress® Proceedings

The contributions of ground based electrophoresis to biology and medicine have been briefly reviewed and placed into context with further advances potentially realizable from a space electrophoresis facility. This has to be viewed primarily as a unique national research facility, which may eventually yield significant benefits for advancement of basic biomedical knowledge and its technological utilization. Primary objectives are increased resolution and throughput for critical separations of living cells and biomacromolecules.

Cryogenic Recovery, Frank S. Howard Apr 1976

Cryogenic Recovery, Frank S. Howard

Space Congress® Proceedings

Because of the low boiling temperature of cryogenic propellants to be used on the Space Shuttle, loss of cryogens from boiloff could become very costly. This paper describes how this shuttle problem is being solved at Kennedy Space Center.

Cryogenic losses are categorized relative to the particular cryogenic involved, the Space Shuttle servicing operation causing boiloff and the magnitude of the loss. The techniques under consideration are discussed in detail. These techniques include reclaiming the boiloff by reliquefaction, upgrading the reclaimed boiloff by purification, and interim boiloff storage in metal hydride prior to reprocessing. One of the reliquefaction processes discussed …

Guidelines For Signing And Marking Of Low-Volume Rural Roads, Ned E. Walton, John M. Mounce, William R. Stockton

Purdue Road School

Existing standards and guidelines for the application of signs and markings are unsuited and inefficient for use on low-volume rural roads (less than 400 A D T ) . T o alleviate this inadequacy, several potentially hazardous situations were evaluated to ascertain actual needs for signs and markings as they relate to economy and safety. These evaluations were based on recent research and on probability of conflict analyses regarding the needs for signing and marking of intersections, horizontal curves, and sections of inadequate passing sight distance. The research revealed that more efficient intersection control can be attained from the careful application …
