Hydrogen Production By Solar Beam, Tokio Ohta, T. N. Veziroglu Apr 1976

Hydrogen Production By Solar Beam, Tokio Ohta, T. N. Veziroglu

Space Congress® Proceedings

Various methods of water-splitting with use of solar energy are reviewed and compared to each other. Direct thermal method has the highest efficiency, but the difficulty is the heat-resisting materials. Thermochemical method is promising if the corrosion-resisting materials are found. Electrolytic method is traditional, but the hybrid system combined with thermochemical and/or photochemical reactions are valuable and believed to be actualizing in the earist stage. Photolysis and biochemical methods are most environmental, but they are of low efficiency at present stage. Actually working system of so-called Yokohama Mark5 is introduced, too.

World-Wide Satellite Surveillance Of Surface Wind Impact Of A Test Case, Vincent J. Cardone Apr 1976

World-Wide Satellite Surveillance Of Surface Wind Impact Of A Test Case, Vincent J. Cardone

Space Congress® Proceedings

On SKYLAB, a combination microwave radar-radiometer (S193) made measurements from which the winds near the sea surface could be inferred. The analysis of the measurements showed that the wind speed could be computed from the radar measurements with at least the accuracy of the wind speed that would have been reported by a weather ship at the time and location of the radar measurement. The impact of this remote sensing capability will be realized in 1978 with the launch of SEASAT-A, which will carry operational versions of active and passive microwave sensors that will be able to measure both wind …

This program consists of designing, building, installing, and operating a field of concentrating parabolic trough solar collectors which provide energy at 310°C, a 32-kWe organic Rankine cycle power plant, and the heating and cooling equipment to utilize the cascaded, low-temperature energy from the turbine/generator. Included in the presentation are descriptions of the total energy system, its components, its performance characteristics, a status report, and a discussion of future plans.

Total energy is an energy cascading concept in which the normally wasted heat from electrical power generation is used for …

Technical Challenges Of Integrating The Space Shuttle, A. C. Martin Apr 1976

Technical Challenges Of Integrating The Space Shuttle, A. C. Martin

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Space Shuttle is a complex flight vehicle comprised of four major elements: orbiter, external tank, main engines, and solid rocket booster.

Integrating the requirements, design, and verification requires resolution of challenging technical problems in flight performance, aerodynamics, aero thermodynamics, structural dynamics and loads, flight control, and propulsion.

The departure from typical cylindrical booster and spacecraft launch configurations complicates analysis and design. Techniques being used to identify and resolve technical problems encountered in integrating the Space Shuttle are discussed.

New Technologies In Solar Energy Conversion -An Overview, Gerald W. Lowery, Charles D. Beach Apr 1976

New Technologies In Solar Energy Conversion -An Overview, Gerald W. Lowery, Charles D. Beach

Space Congress® Proceedings

Useful sources of solar energy, besides the direct rays of the sun, include energy stored in the oceans, the winds, elevated waters and biological materials. Systems for putting any of these forms of solar energy to work for us require economical means for 1) energy conversion 2) energy storage and 3) the concentration of energy in space and time to deliver the necessary sustained high power levels required for significant and productive end use. Technological challenges exist in all three of these areas of need. In this paper the authors describe some of the specific needs and review the status …

Use Of Satellites To Determine Optimum Locations For Solar Power Stations, H. W. Riser Apr 1976

Use Of Satellites To Determine Optimum Locations For Solar Power Stations, H. W. Riser

Space Congress® Proceedings

Ground measurements of solar radiation are too sparse to determine important mesoscale differences that can be of major significance in solar power station locations. Cloud images in the visual spectrum from the SMS/GOES geostationary satellites are used to determine the hourly distribution of sunshine on a mesoscale in the continental United States excluding Alaska. Cloud coverage and density as a function of time of day and season are considered through the use of digital data processing techniques. Low density cirrus clouds are less detrimental to solar energy collection than other types; and clouds in the morning and evening are less …

Autoignition -A Liquid Propellant Explosive Potential Limiting Phenomena, Wallace H. Boggs Apr 1976

Autoignition -A Liquid Propellant Explosive Potential Limiting Phenomena, Wallace H. Boggs

Space Congress® Proceedings

During the design phase of large liquid launch vehicles, personnel safety considerations and facilities and equipment design criteria must account for the unlikely but potentially possible series of failures that would lead to unplanned, hazardous mixing of bulk quantities of propellants. Massive explosion and destruction might be a suspected result.

Simple theory of chemical energetics would predict explosive forces greater than equivalent weights of TNT (trinitrotoluene). Judicious use of "buffer" zone land and "facility or equipment "hardening" requirements dictates that new projects estimate potential explosive yields by precise, realistic analysis.

This paper highlights the work done by NASA to develop …

Evaluation Of Ice And Frost Accumulation On The Space Shuttle External Tank, R. E. Rhodes, S. W. Walker Apr 1976

Evaluation Of Ice And Frost Accumulation On The Space Shuttle External Tank, R. E. Rhodes, S. W. Walker

Space Congress® Proceedings

Ice/Frost formation on the Space Shuttle cryogenic propellant tanks presents a different problem from that of past launch vehicles. Lift off weight addition has been the primary concern on past launch vehicles. The primary ice/frost concern on the Shuttle vehicle is damage to the Orbiter Thermal Protection System due to ice/frost impact. The approach used to arrive at a solution to this unique Shuttle problem is presented. The launch vehicle configuration selected and its limitations are described, along with contingency ground support equipment.

Opportunities For Development Of Advanced Large Cargo Aircraft, Alien H. Whitehead Apr 1976

Opportunities For Development Of Advanced Large Cargo Aircraft, Alien H. Whitehead

Space Congress® Proceedings

A review and study of the history, current state- of-the-art, and prospects for future cargo aircraft systems indicate that the advantages of air transport relative to surface modes can be characterized by rapid delivery, bridging of geographical barriers, and flexible market response.

Air cargo demand is forecasted to increase in a dynamic manner. Estimates vary between 11 to 16 percent per year between now and the 1990's. Forecasts indicate a fivefold increase in air cargo traffic from 1975 to 1985.

Dedicated, advanced terminals will be required to support the air cargo system of the future. Inter- modal containers and handling …

Space Shuttle Noise Suppression Concepts For The Eastern Test Range, Stanley H. Guest, Jess H. Jones Apr 1976

Space Shuttle Noise Suppression Concepts For The Eastern Test Range, Stanley H. Guest, Jess H. Jones

Space Congress® Proceedings

During the early lift-off period of Space Shuttle vehicle (SSV) launch, i.e., the first 10 seconds of flight, the Shuttle's propulsion system's main engines (SSME's) and solid rocket boosters (SRB's) generate intense acoustic pressure fields. This intense pressure field excites various Shuttle structures, components, avionics, and sensitive payload hardware. SSV system elements, of course, must be designed and qualified to withstand the lift-off, ascent, and reentry acoustic environments. In order to minimize the Shuttle's lift-off acoustic design environments, a noise suppression model test program was initiated to examine techniques to reduce the Shuttle noise environments via modifications to the launch …
