Space Shuttle Main Engine, James R. Thompson Apr 1980

Space Shuttle Main Engine, James R. Thompson

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) is a reusable, high performance rocket engine being developed to meet the performance, life reliability, and operational requirements of the Space Shuttle. Significant engine features include a staged combustion power cycle developing chamber pressure in excess of 3,000 psia, high area ratio nozzle expansion, throttling capability, and. a computer operated engine control system1. The SSME is currently undergoing certification testing at the National Space Technology Laboratoreis focusing on demonstrating maturity and reliability for manned flight this year. Current status regarding engine performance, system characteristics, and test results will be summarized. A comparison of the …

Shuttle Performance Augmentationwith The Titan Liquid Boost Module, Arthur E. Inman, John G. Muehlbauer Apr 1980

Shuttle Performance Augmentationwith The Titan Liquid Boost Module, Arthur E. Inman, John G. Muehlbauer

Space Congress® Proceedings

The projected 24000 pound payload lift capability for the baseline Space Shuttle, with anticipated arbiter and external tank weight savings programs implemented, will not meet the 32000 pound payload requirements for the DOD Mission 4 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, NASA has selected the Titan Liquid Boost Module (LBM) to provide thrust augmentation during the boost phase sufficient to meet and provide margin for the defined Mission 4 requirements. The LBM will use Titan 34D Stage I engines and a cluster of four Titan derived 10 foot diameter tanks. The module will be attached to the aft end of the …

Tl Dp-Basic Research For Answering Florida's Residential Energy Conservation Questions, Robert J. Pozzo, David /B. Wiggins Apr 1980

Tl Dp-Basic Research For Answering Florida's Residential Energy Conservation Questions, Robert J. Pozzo, David /B. Wiggins

Space Congress® Proceedings

The subject of energy conservation has not been a popular topic for scientific research and testing in the past as the cost of energy was so low that efficiency was generally not a consideration. However, following the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973, energy use did become important and homeowners began asking serious questions about energy conservation. As many of these questions reached state and federal agencies it became clear that existing research was totally inadequate and often conflicting. The situation was particularly bad in Florida where air conditioning, not heating is the primary environmental factor. This paper describes the State …

Molecular Probing At Microwave Frequencies As A Means Of Studying Atmospheric Motion And Composition, James A. Roberts Apr 1980

Molecular Probing At Microwave Frequencies As A Means Of Studying Atmospheric Motion And Composition, James A. Roberts

Space Congress® Proceedings

Environments of planets are of great interest in this age of space probing. The nature of the atmosphere and its ability to support life is of primary interest today. This paper concerns the use of spectroscopic probing as a means to determine the composition and behavior of planetary atmospheres and nebulae.

One of the most sensitive methods of obtaining properties of gaseous mixtures is the method of probing resonance conditions of one or more molecular species within the mixture. For example, a mixture containing S02 and other gases could be studied by observing the structure and shape of a resonance …

Space Shuttle Orbiter Status: April 1980, Sidney C. Jones Apr 1980

Space Shuttle Orbiter Status: April 1980, Sidney C. Jones

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Space Shuttle Orbiter is in the final stages of preparation, proceeding toward mating with the other Shuttle flight hardware elements, preparatory for its maiden voyage. The first orbital vehicle, the "Columbia, 11 has been undergoing manufacturing, modifications, and testing at KSC, and integrated vehicle processing is planned to continue prior to the planned STS-1 launch.

To establish a national fleet of operational Orbiters, Space Shuttle production includes fabrication of two additional Orbiters, refurbishment of the "Columbia11 after its use In the orbital flight test program and early operations, and conversion of the Orbiter structural test article to a flight …
