The initial Spacelab activities are projected into the second half of the 1980 decade when these new systems will become available. Descriptions …

Mixed Mode Missions, B. G. Noblitt, R. Moke, K. Kissin, R. Mcannally Apr 1980

Mixed Mode Missions, B. G. Noblitt, R. Moke, K. Kissin, R. Mcannally

Space Congress® Proceedings

Shuttle missions have typically been viewed as being devoted to a single mission mode, i.e., delivery of free flyer, Spacelab, etc. Full utilization of the STS capabilities as a platform for space research dictates a flexible strategy towards payload integration and mission design. Simple interfaces, single disciplines and large design and resource margins point the way towards lower payload integration and operation costs. Payloads for early missions, e.g., OSTA-1, OSS-1 and MEA are used as illustrations. The implication of this approach on NASA's future plans, as well as potentially new STS operational concepts, are discussed.

Energy Choices And Environmental Constraints, Lawrence B. Cahill, Raymond W. Kane, Heather L. Burns

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper acknowledges the fact that there is no such thing as a free lunch - energy used is waste made. The paper reviews the environmental problems associated with two distinct classes of emerging energy technologies—solar and synfuels. Although the recent push towards synfuels has raised serious environmental concerns, it will be shown that developing the "clean" solar technologies also will demand sound environmental management practices. While changes in technology-use projections based on environmental constraints are not developed in this paper, it will be seen that some impacts could be quite significant; and still others could very well be "showstoppers". …

Alcohol Fuels For Spaceship Earth, Daniel Hunt Apr 1980

Alcohol Fuels For Spaceship Earth, Daniel Hunt

Space Congress® Proceedings

Foreign crude oil imports currently provide raw material for production of half of the liquid fuels consumed in the United States and represents a cash outflow of almost $8 million per hour. Recent events have dramatically illustrated the substantial vulnerability of such imports. Ethanol is a liquid fuel that can substitute domestic renewable resources for imported petroleum products now and increasingly in the next few years.

Alcohol fuels and in particular gasohol, a blend of 10% agriculturally derived anhydrous ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline, will in the near term be the primary alcohol fuel.

This paper describes the market for …
