Design, Development And Verification Of Life Sciences Experiments, Clay W. Fulcher Apr 1981

Design, Development And Verification Of Life Sciences Experiments, Clay W. Fulcher

Space Congress® Proceedings

A prime objective of the Life Sciences Flight Experiments Program is to conduct a continuing and coordinated program of biomedical research in space which supports the goals of NASA's Life Sciences. To accomplish this objective NASA has developed an effective NASA-industry- academic team to design, develop, test, and operate Life Sciences payloads for Space Shuttle flights. Ames Research Center, the prime NASA center responsible for development of nonhuman life sciences experiments, works closely with Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center and NASA Headquarters' Life Sciences Division in the development of scientifically balanced payloads. Johnson Space Center has responsibility for human experiment …

Space Shuttle External Tank Performance Improvement, Allan M. Norton Apr 1981

Space Shuttle External Tank Performance Improvement, Allan M. Norton

Space Congress® Proceedings

The passive External Tank(ET) is a very active ingredient in the overall Shuttle performance improvement program. Currently, the ET is successfully achieving a 6000 pound weight savings program with the first Lightweight Tank scheduled for delivery in June 1982. Weight savings are being accomplished by: 1) an unique approach to factor of safety, 2) design optimization and 3) reducing large margins. Future performance improvements include studies that develop: 1) an improved Thermal Protection System (TPS) for the aft dome, 2) improved propel 1 ant management, 3) potential use of composites, 4) use internal wiring to eliminate the cable trays, and …

15 Ghz Electromagnetic Propagation In Rain, Paul Nawrocki Apr 1981

15 Ghz Electromagnetic Propagation In Rain, Paul Nawrocki

Space Congress® Proceedings

This is an attempt to devise a model to explain the apparent anomalous dispersion in rain of gated MSBLS-GS data received by a NAVSET located at the end of the Orbiter landing runway at KSC. A tutorial presentation of current theory is given. This includes both the phenomenology of a falling water droplet and the classical electromagnetic solutions of Mie (for spheres) and Stevenson-Oguchi (for spheroids).

A simple model is synthesized to bridge the gap between the complex solutions of classical electromagnetic theory and the simple empirical findings e.g., A = kR of Atlas et al . It is shown …

Test Progress On The Electrostatic Membrane Antenna, J. W. Goslee, D. J. Mihora Apr 1981

Test Progress On The Electrostatic Membrane Antenna, J. W. Goslee, D. J. Mihora

Space Congress® Proceedings

A high-precision, extremely low mass antenna concept is currently being developed for potential deployment from the space shuttle. This innovative antenna derives its reflector surface quality from the application of electrostatic forces to tension and form a thin membrane into the desired concave reflector surface. The typical shuttle-deployed antenna would have a diameter of 100 meters and an RMS surface smoothness of 10 to 1 mm for operation at 1 to 10 GHz. NASA Langley Research Center has built and is currently testing a subscale membrane reflector portion of such an antenna. Preliminary test results and principal factors affecting surface …

Biomass Resources For Alcohol Fuels, James E. Macdowell Apr 1981

Biomass Resources For Alcohol Fuels, James E. Macdowell

Space Congress® Proceedings

The current shortage in petroleum and the poor outlook for the future indicate that a determined effort should be made at this time to develop, construct, and operate alternate fuel plants.

For the near term, the production of alcohol fuel from biomass represents a fast practical means of adding to the dwindling petroleum supply.

The biomass feedstocks which will feed the alcohol distilleries need to be carefully selected. The food chains should not be drastically interrupted, and agricultural economic balances should not be altered.

This paper will investigate the various alternatives regarding alcohol production within the confines of selected biomass …

Solar Residential Application, William Stoney Apr 1981

Solar Residential Application, William Stoney

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Southern Solar Energy Center (SSEC) is one of four regional solar energy centers funded by DOE as lead institutions for the commercialization of solar technologies. This paper describes their programs in general , and presents the progress and results of SSEC's Buildings Program in detail. Several residential designs which resulted from the program are illustrated and the energy saving features explained.

Navy Satellite Communication System - In Transition, John W. Newell Apr 1981

Navy Satellite Communication System - In Transition, John W. Newell

Space Congress® Proceedings

In the space age, satellite systenf engineers and program managers are blessed by ever improving satellite and ground system tech- nology and performance, and are challenged by the changes in their systems required to take advantage of these improvements. An extended period of time is required to bring total satellite communications systems to maturity, or full operational capability. Consequently, as today*s systems are being deployed, the follow-on programs are moving through early development and offering improvements and tradeoffs requiring careful analysis and transition planning.

The several Navy SATCOM programs in being and in development, present the full spectrum of challenge …

The Japanese N-Launch Vehicle, Yukihiko Takenaka Apr 1981

The Japanese N-Launch Vehicle, Yukihiko Takenaka

Space Congress® Proceedings

The N series rocket is a three stage, Thor-Delta type satellite launcher developed and operated under the management of the National Space Development Agency of Japan. This liquid propellant booster was completed with a great deal of the support from the United States.

The first generation of the N, N-I vehicle capable of placing a 130kg pay load into geostationary orbit, has launched six satellites in total since 1975 with one malfunction connected with the mission failure. An upgraded version of the N-I, called N-II launch vehicle, was successfully launched this past February in its first flight. At present this …

Eva Equipment For Satellite Service, Harrison R. Griswold, Richard C. Wilde Apr 1981

Eva Equipment For Satellite Service, Harrison R. Griswold, Richard C. Wilde

Space Congress® Proceedings

Requirements are projected for performing orbital satellite service. Emphasis is on defining the role of Extravehicular Activity (EVA) required to support this future space activity. Specific EVA service techniques and equipment are concepted, building on initial baseline service capability supported by the Shuttle Orbiter, Remote Manipulator System, Extravehicular Mobility Unit, and Manned Maneuvering Unit. New EVA concepts discussed are compatible with current and near-term satellites, projected evolution of the Space Transportation System, and anticipated future space construction requirements.
