Planning Instrumentation Monitoring In Dams, S. N. Guru Rau, R. K. Varma Apr 1981

Planning Instrumentation Monitoring In Dams, S. N. Guru Rau, R. K. Varma

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

This paper outlines the seismic instrumentation being adopted for river valley projects in India, More than 60% of Indian sub-continent lies in an active seismic belt. Of this the middle and lower Himalayas constitute a major area wherein lies a huge untapped hydro-power potential, Being primarily constituted of younger rock formations, frequented by faults, thursts and shear zones and lying in a high seismic risk zone, observations through instruments play a significant role in perspective planning of projects in this area. Setting up of seismological observatories in advance of construction of dam projects, forms a part of investigative planning to …

Dynamic Consolidation Of Liquefiable Sands, R. K. M. Bhandari Apr 1981

Dynamic Consolidation Of Liquefiable Sands, R. K. M. Bhandari

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The Subsoils underneath a tank were improved by dynamic consolidation to density levels required to resist earthquake induced liquefaction. The paper presents seismic analysis of the refinery region, simple liquefaction potential analysis using modified depth reduction factors and performance of the tank resting on the densified ground. The degree of uniformity of compaction achieved by the dynamic consolidation has been discussed.

Local Soil Effects And Liquefaction In The 1978 Thessaloniki Earthquakes, George Gazetas, John Botsis Apr 1981

Local Soil Effects And Liquefaction In The 1978 Thessaloniki Earthquakes, George Gazetas, John Botsis

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The geotechnical aspects of three earthquakes that struck the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, on May 25, June 20 and July 4, 1978 are presented. General background information on the observed damage, seismic history and geology of the area is followed by detailed description of soil profiles, structural characteristics and accelerograms of ground motions recorded at three sites. Acceleration spectra are then examined and compared in order to assess the degree to which local and regional geology and soil-structure interaction affected the recorded motion. Finally, the possibility of liquefaction having taken place in a 6 m-thick saturated loose layer of silty …

Engineering Seismology Aspects Of The M-6.5, Southern Italy Earthquake Of Nov. 23, 1980: A Preliminary Review, E. Faccioli

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The paper provides an overview of salient engineering seismology features of the earthquake, which was one of the major seismic catastrophes occurring in Italy in this century. After a short description of the characteristics of the earthquake source and of the historical seismicity of the region, preliminary strong-motion and intensity data are presented. Aspects of geotechnical engineering interest include some large landslides in inhabited areas, and notable cases of correlation between severity of damage and local soil conditions and topography.

Attenuation Of Ground Vibration Induced By Dynamical Machinery, S. J. Yang Apr 1981

Attenuation Of Ground Vibration Induced By Dynamical Machinery, S. J. Yang

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Attenuation of ground vibration induced by dynamic machinery is investigated with fundamental theory established for both Rayleigh and body waves. Therefore, for determining such attenuation is established, in which the effects of both of them and a coefficient of attenuation of soil that makes the practical calculation easier are involved. A lot of data in relation to the surface vibration measured at some production shops and construction sites has proved that the developed formula more satisfactory than Bornitz's.

Considerations About Some Aspects Of The 23rd November 1980 Earthquake, Filippo Ciuffi, Giuseppe Samela

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

The macroscopic effects of the earthquake of the 23rd of November 1980 in southern Italy are well-known. The purpose of this short paper is to present after about five months, some more exact testimonies with some considerations about numerous questions connected to the geotechnical and geological problems in seismic areas. We have to be precise that we, in this paper, contemplate the MURO LUCANO and CASTELGRANDE areas (in Basilicata) (fig. 1)

On Surface Waves In A Gibson Half-Space, I. Vardoulakis, V. Dougalis

International Conferences on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Soil Dynamics

Harmonic Rayleigh-type and transverse surface waves in a half-space of incompressible material with constant density and with shear modulus linearly increasing with depth (Gibson half-space) are discussed. Under certain hypotheses a discrete spectrum yielding polynomial Eigen functions is obtained, a fact which makes the eigenvalue problem more tractable. The dispersion laws are presented and evaluated numerically.

The newer methods involving the cognitive approach are discussed, and conclusions are drawn regarding the status of the situation and the possible future.

Further To My Egg: The Story Of An Australian Library Campaign, Arthur Mortimer Apr 1981

Further To My Egg: The Story Of An Australian Library Campaign, Arthur Mortimer

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Malcolm Fraser, once said:

"If books and libraries are to compete in the kind of world in which we find ourselves, and in the kind of world in which we must live, if they are to be allowed to make the contribution to the quality of life which I know is within the possibility of things in this area, a more active advocacy for books and for libraries and what they can achieve is required, because the 20th Century does not permit passive salesmanship to succeed".

And there is some truth in Mr. Fraser's …

Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen Apr 1981

Dilemmas Of Document Communication, Axel Andersen

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The information explosion of the last century has had profound effects upon the entire society: The number of publications has increased enormously, and important consequences have been the development of bibliographic tools, of libraries and an improved cooperation between libraries. Computer technology has made a storage of bibliographic information in big, international data bases possible, and complex networks are now being established. As bibliographies and catalogues in their paper-ver si ons thus are disappearing, other sorts of literature are going to be replaced by on-line accessible data bases, and telephone directories, sales catalogues etc. are soon to disappear in their …

Communication Skills: The Role Of The Library School, B. Meakin Apr 1981

Communication Skills: The Role Of The Library School, B. Meakin

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

It is becoming increasingly necessary for the librarian to be an active communicator. We can no longer be content to assume and perpetuate the passive role which history and our own public image have assigned to us. The librarian needs to project his personality to create the optimum circumstances for transmitting and disseminating information.

Given that this is the case, a co-ordinated and intensive effort is needed to produce and train librarians capable of communicating easily and effectively with subordinates, peers, superiors and most important the community. It is suggested that such an effort could best be instigated in the …

Public Relations Of Scientific Libraries In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Y. A. Haase Apr 1981

Public Relations Of Scientific Libraries In The Federal Republic Of Germany, Y. A. Haase

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Up until now, scientific libraries in the Federal Republic of Germany have been very reserved about public relations. One of the reasons for this attitude has been insecurity about the application of the specific methods used in public relations. For this reason the Deutsches Bibliotheksinstitut (West Berlin) organized a project in 1978 that is meant to create the methodological preconditions for public relations in scientific libraries. The methods are to be tried out first in a model of local public relations at one library. The Hessische Landes- und Hochschulbibliothek (Hessian State and University Library) in Darmstadt has been chosen to …

Ifla's Role In Aiding Communication Between Libraries, Else Granheim Apr 1981

Ifla's Role In Aiding Communication Between Libraries, Else Granheim

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

A major distinction must be made between communication/cooperation on the national or regional level and that on the international level. There are ot her barriers to be confronted and they are mainly of a technical, economie/poli tieal and cultural character.

The paper is restricted to IFLA's role in aiding international library communication.

IFLA's UBC programme must be said to constitute an important factor to remove technical barriers and four major thrusts can be mentioned: ISBD's standardization of forms of headings, the standardization of machine-readable bibliographie records and the improvement of national bibliographies.

Standardized communication formates have increased the awareness of …

User Studies In Connection With The Development Of A Decentralized Library Network, Nancy Fjallbrant, Olof Friberg Apr 1981

User Studies In Connection With The Development Of A Decentralized Library Network, Nancy Fjallbrant, Olof Friberg

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper examines the development of university departmental libraries in Scandinavia, and traces the influence of the German seminar libraries. This has led to the establishment of a number of library networks. Financial restraints have resulted in a number of studies of departmental library networks, with a view to possible rationalization. This paper describes studies of the attitudes of library users, at Chalmers University, towards computerization of literature resources and cooperation between the main library and the departmental libraries. It was shown that users were apprehensive of centralization and negative to any increase in administrative processes. At the same time …
