Alternative Liquid Fuels For Transportation, John J. Thomas, Ronald G. Barile

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper reviews present studies at F.I.T. intended to identify, evaluate, and develop alternative liquid fuels for transportation which can be derived from biomass using noncapital intensive processes.

Design Of The Space Telescope For Deployment And Servicing By The Space Shuttle, William F. Wright, Marne L. Mercer Apr 1983

Design Of The Space Telescope For Deployment And Servicing By The Space Shuttle, William F. Wright, Marne L. Mercer

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Space Telescope is a major orbiting observatory which will be deployed and serviced by the Space Shuttle in 1985. The servicing includes unscheduled maintenance, periodic on-orbit maintenance, and return to earth for ground refurbishment and redeployment.

The Space Shuttle interfaces with the Space Telescope may be divided into four categories: structural, electrical, safety, and extravehicular activity (EVA). This paper will describe the end result of the design activities in each of these interface areas and discuss the design drivers associated with them.

Planaria Regeneration In Zero-Gravity, Dena K. Rashkover Apr 1983

Planaria Regeneration In Zero-Gravity, Dena K. Rashkover

Space Congress® Proceedings

The following 1s a report on an experimental package designed for the Getaway Special,GAS, Program* The original Idea was thought of 1n 1982 and a preliminary presentation was made at the 19th Annual Space Congress. Since that time, the experimenter has, through speaking with several experts In the field of zoology, come up with a number of changes and better methods for making and carrying out the experiment.

The experiment calls for a comparison of the process of regeneration of body parts on cut Planaria worms between a group on earth with normal conditions of gravity and a group in …

Future Requirements And Applications For Orbital Transfer Vehicles, D. E. Charhut, W. J. Ketchum Apr 1983

Future Requirements And Applications For Orbital Transfer Vehicles, D. E. Charhut, W. J. Ketchum

Space Congress® Proceedings

The capability of the Space Shuttle will be enhanced by use of the high-energy Centaur to provide payload transfer to higher orbits (geosynchronous, etc.) and for planetary escape missions. Future orbital transfer vehicles (OTV) requirements for NASA, military, and commercial exploitation of space will require improvements and technological developments such as increased performance, increased reliability, and increased mission versatility. Eventual OTV space basing should offer further cost reductions through vehicle reuse, freedom from Shuttle constraints, and possible STS propellant recovery.

This paper summarizes Centaur characteristics, performance, and program status and presents future considerations for orbital transfer vehicles into the Space …

Photovoltaics Overview, Gerard G. Ventre Apr 1983

Photovoltaics Overview, Gerard G. Ventre

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper first discusses some of the basic concepts underlying photovoltaic system operation including the photovoltaic effect, response to solar radiation, cell materials, efficiency, operating characteristics and manufacturing processes. System components are considered next, including stationary and tracking flat-plate arrays, concentrating arrays, storage and power conditioning equipment. Both stand-alone and grid-connected applications are discussed and the paper concludes with a brief look at industry trends and prospects.

Processing And Deploying The Mcdonnell Douglas Payload Assist Module (Pam), C. E. Bryan, I. J. Webster Apr 1983

Processing And Deploying The Mcdonnell Douglas Payload Assist Module (Pam), C. E. Bryan, I. J. Webster

Space Congress® Proceedings

This pap*r presents the flow of the operational PAM system from the time processing is started at the launch site through deployment from the Orbiters. It addresses the ground checkout activities, in-orbit operations including crew and ground personnel system evaluation and command activities, and PAM deployment from the Orbiter. Additionally, transfer orbit errors for two PAMs used on STS-5 are presented.

The PAM ground processing approach affords maximum assurance of a flight-ready PAM prior to mating the spacecraft and provides a cargo element that is fully verified as flightready before integration with the cargo integration test equipment (CITE) and the …
