The Use Of Force Feedback Control For Robotic Mating Of Umbilical Fuel Lines, R. Fullmer, A. Dilpare, L. Davis Apr 1988

The Use Of Force Feedback Control For Robotic Mating Of Umbilical Fuel Lines, R. Fullmer, A. Dilpare, L. Davis

Space Congress® Proceedings

NASA has long desired the ability to remotely connect, disconnect, and reconnect the umbilical fuel lines to the Space Shuttle Vehicle (SSV). The Robotic Application and Development Laboratory (RADL) at Kennedy Space Center has been investigating the application of robotics to this problem. A generic remote umbilical system has been identified for a proof-of-concept demonstration, wherein a robot is used to mate an umbilical connector with a moving target representing the SSV. This task is a variation of the classic peg-inthe- hole problem, where the hole is undergoing random motions.

For umbilical docking, the ability to minimize and control contact …

Model Shuttle Vehicle Developed To Support Vandenberg Hydrogen Disposal Investigation, Charles L. Heckart, Jack D. Ronda Apr 1988

Model Shuttle Vehicle Developed To Support Vandenberg Hydrogen Disposal Investigation, Charles L. Heckart, Jack D. Ronda

Space Congress® Proceedings

Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSME) discharge a significant quantity of unburned hydrogen during normal start and shutdown operations. At Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB), a Flight Readiness Firing (FRF) or launch abort could introduce this unburned hydrogen into the enclosed SSME exhaust duct. This hydrogen in a closed duct creates a risk of detonation which could result in significant overpressure at the aft heat shield thereby causing damage to the Space Shuttle Vehicle (SSV).

To mitigate the detonation hazard the Air Force (AF) initiated a Hydrogen Disposal System (HDS) program. Extensive analyses and feasibility testing were conducted on possible solutions. …

Ground Based Operations Support By Artificial Intelligence, Rainer Grun, Albrecht Kellner Apr 1988

Ground Based Operations Support By Artificial Intelligence, Rainer Grun, Albrecht Kellner

Space Congress® Proceedings

The increasing number and sustained duration of future manned or unmanned space missions, the growing complexity of spacecraft, the increasing variety of payloads and the demand for maximum economic efficiency of space operations will lead to the evolution of large-scale ground based operations infrastructures of increasing complexity and sophistication.

In order to enhance the manageability and safety of operations under these aspects and to limit the amount of highly skilled personnel required, thereby supporting an early economic attractivity of space, the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as support for ground based operations appears to be a promising method which has …

The Express Project: Automating The Software Development Process, John W. Mcinroy, Leonard S. Baurnel

Space Congress® Proceedings

The goal of the Express project is to provide an efficient software development environment for embedded systems. The approach is to create a new life-cycle paradigm, using rapid prototyping to validate system specifications. The rapid prototype will be made possible by using (1) very high level specification languages that automatically generate code and (2) a user-machine interface that helps both in the layout of the design and in the specification of the input devices and output screens for the embedded system.

All user interactions with Express are integrated through Express's knowledge-based Framework, which will support efficient, interdisciplinary communications. The Framework …

Rule-Based Configuration Control Mechanisms, Brian G. Sayrs, Joseph C. Ross Apr 1988

Rule-Based Configuration Control Mechanisms, Brian G. Sayrs, Joseph C. Ross

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper explores the use of rule-based techniques to manage reusable software libraries. In particular, we examine the properties of partially instantiated Ada generic packages and present an object- based view of a particular collection of reusable Ada generic packages. We argue that because types are the primary mechanism for structuring programs in Ada, our ability to organize and manage large Ada software systems is commensurate with the software development environment's support for organizing and managing types. We have assembled a testbed environment for Evolutionary Software Associates' Workshop object management software. The testbed enables us to evaluate the Workshop system …

Advanced Launch System Issues, Vincent A. Caluori Apr 1988

Advanced Launch System Issues, Vincent A. Caluori

Space Congress® Proceedings

The Advanced Launch System (ALS) is a challenge to industry and government to develop the first true operationally mature space flight system. As shown in figure 1, our early boosters were derived from ballistic missiles. Saturn was a special-case design put together in a time-constrained and dollarunconstrained environment; Shuttle was and is a valuable development addressing reusability and manned spaceflight. None of these systems had the benefit of operational experience— experience which is invaluable both in understanding the operational requirements and in defining them to the designer.. None of these systems had the benefit of the lessons learned in working …

Compliance Strategies For Robotic Ground Servicing Of The Shuttle, Robert Podlasek Apr 1988

Compliance Strategies For Robotic Ground Servicing Of The Shuttle, Robert Podlasek

Space Congress® Proceedings

In contrast to manufacturing robotic applications, many Kennedy Space Center robotic applications require a combination of heavy lift capacity, real-time vision for course positioning of the robot arm and real-time compliance for the final precise positioning of the robot end-effector. Moreover, for some applications, this must be accomplished in a dynamic environment. The design requirements for launch pad robotic applications are more stringent than the requirements for robots operating in a microgravity environment because the lack of gravity relaxes the heavy load and dynamic constraints to a large degree.

The compliance of a robotic system is the ability of the …

Let's Make It Simple, George T. Nickolas Apr 1988

Let's Make It Simple, George T. Nickolas

Space Congress® Proceedings

The President's Blue Ribbon Commission on Defense Management Report identified several problems areas which need to be addressed both by Congress and the Department of Defense (DoD) procurement policy people. In the report of the commission it was indicated that recent procurement "horror stories" had caused certain corrective actions to be prescribed. The prescription was written by Congress and ended up as laws. These were translated into regulations not only designed to implement the laws but to correct the procurement procedures for the acquisition of spare parts. These changes as designed were to preclude additional "horror stories" from materializing and …
