Vacancies Filled By Voters’ Voices: A Call For Open Special Elections With Ranked Choice Voting In New York, Fordham Law School Rule Of Law Clinic, Dani D'Annunzio, Dawn Edelman, David Zwick Feb 2026

Vacancies Filled By Voters’ Voices: A Call For Open Special Elections With Ranked Choice Voting In New York, Fordham Law School Rule Of Law Clinic, Dani D'Annunzio, Dawn Edelman, David Zwick

Rule of Law Clinic

New York’s special election system for filling vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives and the State Legislature excludes voters from the candidate selection process. Instead of voters selecting nominees, political party leaders designate their parties’ respective candidates. In this report, the Fordham Law School Rule of Law Clinic recommends reforming this system by implementing open special elections using ranked choice voting. All candidates who meet petition signature requirements, regardless of party affiliation, would compete in a single election. This reform would improve participation, representation, and accountability without sacrificing efficiency.

Rivers Reimagined: Floods, Droughts, And The Future Of Hydrologic Systems In Aotearoa, Ryan Anderson '26 Feb 2026

Rivers Reimagined: Floods, Droughts, And The Future Of Hydrologic Systems In Aotearoa, Ryan Anderson '26

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Hydroelectric power plays a crucial role in New Zealand’s renewable energy system and depends on consistent and reliable rainfall and river flow. This study analyzes hydrologic variability in two Wairoa River catchments in the Northland Region of New Zealand, the Mangahahuru River (Site 46674) and the Kaihu River at Gorge (Site 46611). Over four months, streamflow data provided by the University of Otago, Department of Geography was analyzed using R in RStudio to examine flood frequency, seasonal drought periods, and long-term flow trends. Both catchments were evaluated with approximately 95% completeness. The comparison in flow trends between the rivers highlights …

Investigating The Effects Of Novel Hexylamine Compounds On Hn6 Carcinoma Cell Survival, Lydia Neven '27, Dominic Pittman '26

Annual Student Research Poster Session

Cancer is a broad term encompassing hundreds of distinct diseases, each arising from unique genetic and environmental factors. Because of this diversity, there is a continual need to develop new chemotherapies. Oral cancer, in particular, remains one of the most common cancers worldwide, yet effective therapeutic options for this malignancy remain limited. Although billions of dollars are invested annually in cancer drug discovery in the United States, the process of evaluating and advancing candidate compounds often represents a critical bottleneck, leading many promising therapies to be abandoned before their full potential is understood. In collaboration with the Hansen lab, we …

Adult Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Criteria For Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Activation May Not Be The Same For Pediatric Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Lindsay Fick, Sherouk A. Abdelmoity, Jennifer Flint, Ashley Sherman, Jenna Miller Feb 2026

Adult Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest Criteria For Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Activation May Not Be The Same For Pediatric Out Of Hospital Cardiac Arrest, Lindsay Fick, Sherouk A. Abdelmoity, Jennifer Flint, Ashley Sherman, Jenna Miller

Presentations

Pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a high-mortality event, with survival to discharge consistently below 10%. Although extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (E-CPR) improves outcomes for in-hospital cardiac arrest, its application in the pre-hospital environment is not well defined for pediatrics. Identifying which pediatric patients might benefit from OHCA ECPR activation is essential for developing feasible pre hospital pediatric E-CPR systems. Preliminary analysis of applying  criteria for adult OHCA ECPR activation can provide a crucial next step in establishing feasibility and applicability for the pediatric patient population.

Methods

A single center retrospective review was conducted of pediatric OHCA cases presenting from 2018–2025. …

Ecmo Is Often Required In Pediatric Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Tmp-Smx) Associated Severe Respiratory Failure, Youya Wang, Jenna Miller, Mandy Morgan, Jennifer Goldman Feb 2026

Ecmo Is Often Required In Pediatric Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (Tmp-Smx) Associated Severe Respiratory Failure, Youya Wang, Jenna Miller, Mandy Morgan, Jennifer Goldman

Presentations

Background

Recent publications describe severe disease in pediatric patients with TMP-SMX associated respiratory failure progressing to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), lung transplantation and/or death. ECMO characteristics in this patient population remain poorly defined.

Methods

This is a retrospective observational report from our institutional referral Redcap database reviewing ECMO characteristics for pediatric patients (age ≤ 18 years old) patients. This includes presumed TMPSMX associated severe respiratory failure, following 6 or more days of TMP-SMX exposure and lack of other diagnostic explanation.

Results

To date, at our institution we have identified 32 total adult and pediatric with clinical criteria for TMP-SMX severe …

Quantitative Echocardiography Markers To Denote Severity Of Tricuspid Regurgitation Compared To Cardiac Mri In Single Right Ventricle Variants, Tony Zunica, Daniel Forsha, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Anmol Goyal Feb 2026

Quantitative Echocardiography Markers To Denote Severity Of Tricuspid Regurgitation Compared To Cardiac Mri In Single Right Ventricle Variants, Tony Zunica, Daniel Forsha, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Anmol Goyal

Posters

Background: Single right ventricle and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) are congenital heart diseases that require multiple palliative surgeries to create a single right ventricular system. 25-30% of these patients develop significant tricuspid regurgitation (TR), which is associated with worse outcomes among all stages of palliation. Echocardiography remains the cornerstone imaging modality for serial evaluation in these patients. However, estimating tricuspid regurgitation is highly subjective in the pediatric population, necessitating need for reliable and reproducible quantitative echocardiography markers. Currently, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is considered the gold standard for quantification of tricuspid regurgitation with good accuracy and reproducibility. Objectives/Goal: Our …
