Type Of Union And Reproductive Health Influence On Domestic Violence In Sierra Leone, Yvonne Rowe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Domestic violence (DV) is one of the most hidden but prevalent public health concerns affecting women of childbearing age in Africa, despite ongoing prevention initiatives. Lack of power and control in the household is a significant precursor of DV in women, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. While poverty, gender inequality, and societal norms have been identified as directly related to DV, the factors of type of union and reproductive health choice remain unexplored. This quantitative study with a cross-sectional design assessed the relationship between the type of union, female contraceptive use, and type of DV amongst women in Sierra Leone. Anchored …

Data were collected for this qualitative study through semistructured interviews with 10 bariatric weight loss surgery recipients. Data were analyzed using the five stages of Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method process of data analysis. Analysis of the data led to five themes and eight subthemes. …

Recently, the adoption of fully automated life support training modalities by health care organizations has become widespread with limited literature available showing the effects on inpatient, cardiac arrest survival. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effects of fully automated life support training on inpatient, cardiac arrest survival. Applying Bloom’s mastery learning theory, the impact of the Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) quarterly training and hospital unit compliance on inpatient cardiac arrest return of spontaneous circulation …
The Efficacy Of Barcoded Medication Administration In The Emergency Department, Aleksandr Vasserman
The Efficacy Of Barcoded Medication Administration In The Emergency Department, Aleksandr Vasserman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The practice problem addressed in this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was safe medication administration in the emergency department (ED). Paper-based delivery of medication administration is prone to errors and multiple points of failure affecting patients’ safety. The gap in nursing practice was the lack of analysis regarding the efficacy of the barcoded medication administration (BCMA) process in the ED. The practice-focused question for this project addressed whether the implementation of BCMA in the ED effectively reduced medication administration errors as compared to the previously used paper-based, non-BCMA process. The aim of this doctoral project was to review the efficacy …

Effect Of Compassion Fatigue And Burn Out Education In The Nurse, Pamela Spendiff
Effect Of Compassion Fatigue And Burn Out Education In The Nurse, Pamela Spendiff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Evolving changes in healthcare have caused increased levels of pressure on registered nurses (RNs) which increases compassion fatigue (CF), secondary traumatic stress (STS) and burnout (BO) and negatively affect compassion satisfaction (CS) which may affect a nurse’s abilities and skills to provide quality care for patients and cause the RN to leave the profession. The mindfulness technique is one method which may help reduce CF, STS and BO in RNs. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study, guided by the compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue model (CS-CF), was to determine what effect a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) has on CF, BO and …

This study sought to examine the lived experiences of the partners of those who work in Crimes Against Children (CAC) units. CAC units include investigative evidence that has been considered traumatic. Specific examination of stress that life partners experience was conducted …

Staff Hypertension Education Program For Vulnerable Populations In A Primary Care Setting, Brando Jobity
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For health care practitioners to effectively manage hypertension (HTN) patients and their related long- and short-term consequences, they must first identify the underlying cause of the disease. When patient interventions are not regularly implemented by clinicians, the likelihood of complications from HTN increases. A gap in staff knowledge on managing patients with HTN was identified in an outpatient clinic in the midwestern United States. A staff education program for health care providers to close the knowledge gap was developed based on the most recent Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of HTN. The aim of this …
Predicting Physical Therapist Assistant Program Completion By Prior College Enrollment Status, Deanna Lamb
Predicting Physical Therapist Assistant Program Completion By Prior College Enrollment Status, Deanna Lamb
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractA growing number of university graduates delay workforce entry to reverse transfer to a community college for additional training. This trend is common in 2-year physical therapist assistant (PTA) programs where over 34% of all PTA students have a prior earned bachelor’s degree. The problem addressed in this study is that little research is available to determine how PTA students’ prior college enrollment status predicts PTA program completion. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine if students’ prior college enrollment status predicts PTA program completion, while controlling for ethnicity. Astin’s input-environment-outcome college effect model was the framework …

Factors Influencing Nurses’ Willingness To Recommend Reiki For Their Oncology Patients’ Pain, Amy Nezzer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hospitalized, adult, oncology patients experience intractable pain that does not always respond to pharmacological therapies. Reiki is a complementary and alternative method used to reduce pain and increase the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments, but nurses may not possess knowledge about Reiki or have the self-efficacy to educate patients about Reiki. The purpose of this study, guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, was to identify the relationship between nurses’ knowledge, level of self-efficacy in educating their patients, beliefs about Reiki’s effectiveness, years practicing as a nurse, and willingness to recommend Reiki for their oncology patients’ pain. The Knowledge of Nurses’ Questionnaire …

What Are The Barriers Experienced By Self-Represented Litigants In Civil Court?, Darwin Fitzgerald Rice
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Judiciary Act of 1789 permits parties to plead and manage their cases personally or by a defense counsel. The legal provision laid the foundation for self-representation guidelines adopted by the courts. Despite self-representation becoming widely accepted in the legal system, there is limited understanding of the barriers faced by litigants. John Rawls’ theory of Justice written in 1971 guided an in-depth analysis of these experiences. The theory states that with the subject of justice things are just or unjust. With the need to answer the research questions that sought to explore the lived experiences of self-represented litigants, attorneys, and …

Organizational justice influences employees’ citizenship behaviors and performance. Work environments characterized by unfair or unjust treatment are associated with low job commitment, dissatisfaction, demotivation, nonperformance, and high turnover. There was a need to explore the perception of variable justice in healthcare organizations grappling with a perennial shortage of skilled health professionals and high levels of turnover. In addition, reports of injustices in nonprofits in the health care sector made it challenging for the organizations to attract and retain volunteers.
