The population served by health care systems in the United States is widely diversified, which requires nurses to be culturally competent in their care practices. However, studies have shown that nurses do not consistently deliver culturally competent care. This basic qualitative study was designed to explore nurses’ perceptions of cultural competence at the bedside to understand what is needed to improve cultural competency practices. There is a problem in the city of Chicago. Gangs are responsible for a substantial percentage of violent crimes in most jurisdictions. This study examined how and to what extent single-parent matriarchal households influenced African American men between 18 and 25 to join gangs in Chicago. This study’s theoretical foundations were matriarchal theory and critical race theory. This qualitative study’s research design is heuristic phenomenology design. Poor adherence to medications is a significant problem that can lead to increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs.
