Older individuals living in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are more prone to falling compared to those living in the community outside of such facilities. The consequences of falls, including severe injuries, impact not only the patients but also their families and health care costs. The primary purpose of this project was to address the need to reduce and prevent falls in LTCFs. The practice gap was the lack of a comprehensive fall prevention program and education for facility staff about this subject. This staff education project was focused on determining if educating RNs and LPNs about fall risk and prevention …

Developing Sustainable Water Supply Management Strategies In Lagos, Nigeria., Adebayo Oyebanji Jan 2022

Developing Sustainable Water Supply Management Strategies In Lagos, Nigeria., Adebayo Oyebanji

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem of inadequate potable water supply to all Lagos residents persists despite the efforts by Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), whose mandate is to provide adequate potable water to Lagos residents. This problem is important because of the high costs of the adverse effects of inadequate potable water supply to the populace. Some researchers have identified a declining state of Lagos water supply and others attribute the problem to lack of sustainable management and funding strategies by LWC. Using the systems theory lens, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore better sustainable management and funding strategies used …

Relationship Between Patients Of Low Socioeconomic Status With Multiple Sclerosis And Health Care Providers, Jennifer N. Rhoads

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many health care initiatives seek to improve patient–provider experiences and relationships to support patient satisfaction rates and health outcomes. However, a small amount of published research has examined the perceptions of low socioeconomic status (SES) patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) regarding their relationship with their health care provider and how these perceptions affect patient outcomes. Prioritizing communication and approachability between the health care provider and a patient can be instrumental in creating and fostering an authentic relationship. Built Environment And Well-Being Of Stem Women Employed In The Petroleum Sector, Natalie Robinson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Male-dominated occupations have received increased attention concerning the environmental health and retention of its specialized workforce. Research studies on the impact of the environment suggest that ecological and infrastructure conditions of the workplace affect the psychological health and physical well-being of employees across both public and private industries. Presently, in the context of the oil and gas and engineering field, there is a literature gap in exploring whether workplace conditions or adverse circumstances in male-dominated built environments negatively affect the psychological well-being and retention of women employed in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) occupations. For the current qualitative study, …

Narratives Of Adjustment And Adaptation Of Older Males With Life Sentences, John Taglianetti Jan 2022

Narratives Of Adjustment And Adaptation Of Older Males With Life Sentences, John Taglianetti

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe United States holds over 40% of the world’s population of men serving life in prison. There are far more men serving life today than the total prison population just decades ago. Scholarly debate research on the adaptation and adjustment of LWOPs is sparse, and very little literature was available from the inmates’ perspective. Most scholarly literature addressed stakeholders’ views on how the prison environment influenced adaptation. This research was designed to answer the LWOPs' perspective on adaptation and adjustment while imprisoned and how they described their present and ongoing adaptation and adjustment experiences. A narrative approach was used to …

Suicidal Ideation Among American Indian And Alaska Natives In The United States, Lacie Lashawn Tillman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Suicidal ideation is a silent public health issue across the United States. Evidence suggests that suicidal ideation is a predictor of suicide attempt and completion. Suicide is a leading cause of death among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AIs/ANs) in the United States, especially among younger people. Alcohol and illicit drug use, coupled with poor social conditions, can lead to suicidal ideations—and sometimes suicide completion. Using social cognitive theory, this quantitative cross-sectional study compared variables within the 2017, 2018, and 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to determine the effect that alcohol and/or illicit drug use has on …

The Perceptions And Practices Of Child Welfare Caseworkers And Decision-Making Related To Reunification, Sonja D. Ulrich

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The child welfare system exists to support safe and healthy families. When children cannot remain safely with family, they are removed and often placed with nonrelatives. Only half of all of the children removed from their homes achieve reunification. In the current study, research questions examined the perceptions of caseworkers in determining whether or when a child could reunify with their family of removal, and how the perceptions of the caseworker affected their practice regarding reunification. Using social learning theory as a framework, a caseworker’s decisions were viewed as a balance between their work environment and their personal perceptions. Following …

Assessing Relationships Among Autonomy, Supportive Leadership, And Burnout In Public Elementary Teachers, Jana Rose Benson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractStress and burnout among teachers are serious problems because of the negative consequences associated with them that have contributed to the current crisis in the American education system. Until the problems of teacher stress and burnout are understood and addressed, efforts to restructure American education cannot succeed. This study assessed the relationships among perceived autonomy, perceived transformational leadership style and burnout in public elementary teachers, and the moderating/mediating influence of teacher orientation (Montessori and traditional) on burnout levels. An integration of Maslach’s multi-dimensional burnout theory, self-determination theory, and the theory of transformational leadership formed the theoretical foundation of the study. …

Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond Jan 2022

Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many food desert residents suffer from food insecurity as a result of residing in communities where access to affordable, healthy foods is limited. This limited access can make it difficult for these residents to consume healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, on a consistent basis. To increase access to healthy foods, interventions such as the building of supermarkets, the introduction of mobile farmers markets or mobile produce markets, and the conversion of local corner stores into healthy corner stores are often introduced to food desert communities. However, these intervention efforts fail to focus on non-physical factors, such as the …

Relationship Between Healthcare Provider Communication And Preventable 30-Day Copd Readmission Rates, Jonathan Butler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services implemented the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program in 2012. Ten years later, hospitals across the United States have had negligible improvement in reducing preventable 30-day hospital readmissions for COPD patients. Healthcare, specifically the hospital setting, consists of complex processes and procedures. Not one process or procedure is the sole cause of correcting excessive preventable 30-day readmissions of patients with COPD. The essential elements of provider communication were studied using the Complex Adaptive Systems theory in this quantitative study. Each fundamental element of provider communication was the independent variable, and the preventable 30-day COPD excessive …
