However, most studies concentrate on the benefits for the older adult participants. The purpose of this generic qualitative research study was to explore elementary school teachers’ perceptions of the academic performance of students who participated in an intergenerational program with older adults. The theoretical framework consists of four processes of modeling a social learning theory component. A purposeful sampling of eight …

At-Risk Male Student Athletes’ Perceptions Of Support Efforts To Enhance Retention At A Faith-Based University, Drametrice Traronzoe Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Student athletes often enter college unprepared for academic rigor, making them particularly vulnerable in terms of academic success. At a faith-based university in the southeast United States, low retention of student athletes results from poor class attendance, course failures, and low grade point averages. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore how at-risk college student athletes perceived the value of support efforts to enhance retention at this faith-based university. Guided by Tinto’s theory of student departure, this basic qualitative study involved a sample of 12 to 15 at-risk college student athletes from the university who participated in …

Exposure to high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is emerging as a crucial risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a deadly lung disease with a significant public health burden. The Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) in Alaska has one of the worst PM2.5 issues in the United States. The PM2.5 issues in the area are associated with increased wood-burning and temperature inversions in the winter and wildfires in the summer. Categorical Differences: Social Identity Heuristics Predict Differences In Cognitive Empathy, Corey Ronald Sims
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The current study aimed to identify if there was a relationship between cross-ethnic racial identity and cognitive empathy for others and whether social and personal identities mediated this effect. Self-categorization theory was used as the theoretical framework. In this study, it was hypothesized that cross-ethnic racial identity significantly predicts empathic accuracy, and that social and personal identities mediate this relationship. A non-experimental, researcher-designed survey was used to collect participant data and demographic characteristics. Participant inclusion criteria were an age between 18 and 55, U.S. citizenship, and a self-identification as Asian American, Black American, Hispanic American, or White American. The Cross-Ethnic …

Head Start Teachers’ And Administrators’ Perceptions Of Reasons For Elevated Teacher Turnover Rates, Amanda Renea Lankford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many Head Start programs have closed classrooms due to staff shortages, with up to 30% of teacher positions unfilled. Reducing the elevated teacher turnover rate in Head Start centers is critical to maintaining program effectiveness and controlling costs; however, a limiting factor may be differences in administrators’ and teachers’ perceptions of reasons Head Start teachers leave their positions. Guided by Herzberg’s two-factor theory, this qualitative study was conducted to explore perceptions of Head Start administrators, current teachers, and exiting teachers regarding reasons for the elevated teacher turnover rates in Head Start programs. Semistructured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted with …

According to the Pew Research Center, there has been an increase in social networking site (SNS) usage by 72% since 2011. Due to the rise, researchers have undertaken studies on using the internet and SNS-based data with forensic assessments. However, researchers have not explored the views and opinions of professionals who conduct these evaluations, specifically regarding doctoral-level practitioners and criminal responsibility. Due to this, the American Psychological Association (APA) does not have specific guidelines on using SNS as a collateral source. This study involved one-on-one interviews with seven doctoral-level practitioners who conduct criminal responsibility evaluations on individuals 18 and older …
