The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the effect of generational cohorts on officers' mental health help-seeking behaviors. The core concepts of the Theory of Planned Behavior (attitudes, subjective norms, internal perceived behavioral control, external perceived …

Globally, most information technology projects (ITPs) are reported as unsuccessful. Poor project management practices have consistently been identified as the leading cause of ITP failures. However, ITP practitioners manage project processes in diverse ways without clear guiding principles in terms of what does or does not work in practice for success. Process management practices in projects were explored in this grounded theory qualitative study from a systems theory perspective. The purpose was to understand from project practitioners' experiences what guiding principles potentially influenced ITPs to success. These experiences were then analyzed to develop a theory describing how to best use …

AbstractEvery year there are approximately 20 million new cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States, and half of these are among young adults. Stark County, Ohio recently experienced an increase in chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis cases among 18- to 24-year-old individuals. Public health practitioners have since called for research regarding factors that affect STD knowledge and perceptions in this population. This cross-sectional study was guided by the social-ecological model and assessed the association between attendance at a religious-affiliated institution, access to comprehensive sex education, and STD knowledge. One hundred thirty-eight (n=138) participants, aged 18 to 24 years, …

AbstractPerinatal depression is among the most common of mental illnesses a woman experiences during pregnancy and postpartum. Currently, in the Federally Qualified Health Center, patients are only screened at the postpartum visit while the evidence-based literature recommends screening in the prenatal period as well thus creating a gap in practice. The purpose of this project was to address this gap through the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a staff education project on perinatal depression and screening. Framed within the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model of instructional design, the project was guided by two questions: (a) What evidence in …

Why Congress Has Not Passed Facial Recognition Technology Legislation For Public Spaces, Kecia Treviri Robertson Jan 2022

Why Congress Has Not Passed Facial Recognition Technology Legislation For Public Spaces, Kecia Treviri Robertson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractFacial recognition technology (FRT) in public spaces has been a political and social concern for more than 30 years. Additional controversial issues surrounding the use of FRT in public spaces include technological development without standardization or regulations; biometric algorithms developed with bias; and the social issues of privacy intrusion, gender and racial bias, data security, accuracy, and privacy concerns. Researchers have concurred a national policy is needed to address FRT issues but have not explained why Congress …

Dispositional Joy As A Mediator Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Parental Reflective Functioning, Mollie Brady Jan 2022

Dispositional Joy As A Mediator Of Adverse Childhood Experiences And Parental Reflective Functioning, Mollie Brady

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Parental reflective functioning (PRF) is a critical contributor to positive parenting outcomes. Early adverse experiences are a significant risk factor for insensitive parenting practices and poor PRF. Researchers have found that positive emotions, such as dispositional joy (DJ), influence both parenting outcomes and building resilience to stressful events. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), DJ, and PRF have been studied extensively in the literature as separate or paired constructs. However, to date, no studies have examined how these variables interact with each other. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between ACEs, DJ, and PRF, and the mediating …

Intimate Partner Violence In Women Of African American And African Cultures, Patricia Brooks Jan 2022

Intimate Partner Violence In Women Of African American And African Cultures, Patricia Brooks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent social problem that results in a high number of deaths, psychological trauma, and physical mutilation. Previous research showed African American women as having elevated rates of intimate partner violence attributable to a lack of representation in epidemiological studies due to low socioeconomic status and cultural norms. In Central and West Africa, IPV is associated with childhood marriages, lack of education, cultural norms, and socioeconomic status. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences and cultural views of both African American and African women and how they use these cultural …

Relationship Between Early Years’ Activities Of Daily Living And Alzheimer’S Disease Onset, Linyi Fan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A few promising studies have indicated that activities of daily life (ADL) may be a useful way of predicting Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). However, the existing cross-sectional studies fail to show how ADLs in early years predict AD, and how social factors influence health either in addition to or in interaction with individual risk factors. Using a social epidemiology framework, this study examined the relationship between early years’ ADL and the development of AD in later years. This quantitative study included 4,526 participants derived from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) dataset. The dependent variable was whether the participant has been …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of Young Adults Who Self-Identify With Primary Complex Motor Stereotypies, Vanja Maria Popovic

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Primary complex motor stereotypies (p-CMS) are repetitive, rhythmic, and predictable involuntary movements which occur in typically developing individuals. To date, research has focused on observational data involving parents, leaving a lack of first-hand information about the effect of p-CMS on experiencers’ quality of life and wellbeing in adulthood. This phenomenological study, grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory, explored lived experiences of six young adults, ages 21 to 29 years, who self-identified with p-CMS, through in-depth telephone and Zoom interviews. I aimed to answer how p-CMS affected participants in academic, work, and social settings, what meaning participants assigned to their p-CMS, and …

Texas Metro Versus Nonmetro Variations In Cervical Cancer Preventative Measures, Amanda S. English

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cervical cancer is a public health threat that can be eliminated with the use of preventative measures. Individuals who live in Texas’s nonmetro areas are more likely than individuals who live in metro areas of Texas to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. In this study, the individual- and county-level factors in metro and nonmetro areas that facilitate or inhibit the receipt of cervical cancer preventative measures at multiple levels of influence were examined. The ecological model was used as the theoretical framework. Using secondary data from a national population health survey (n=1,303), the goal of this cross-sectional, quantitative study was …

Mental Health Professionals Working In Prisons: Their Perspectives On The Quality And Availability Of Treatment And Therapy For Mentally Ill Inmates, Tara Harvey

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The perspectives of mental health professionals who work with inmates who have serious and persistent mental illnesses is largely unknown. Prisons, law enforcement, and the courts may all benefit from understanding these perspectives regarding how to treat the mentally ill in the criminal justice system (CJS). Many studies (mostly quantitative) have been conducted to address the increase of mentally ill inmates and have focuses on different areas of this phenomenon. However, to date, no qualitative studies have been located that depict the perceptions of mental health professionals working in prisons and their viewpoints regarding this population’s access to quality and …
