Exploring Teacher Confidence Using Behavioral Interventions In The Classroom, Etoile Denise Swift
Exploring Teacher Confidence Using Behavioral Interventions In The Classroom, Etoile Denise Swift
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The original purpose of this study was to conduct a quantitative quasi-experimental study to compare a treatment group of teachers with training in the cognitive behavioral ABC model to a control group and examine differences in the average count of referrals to school counselors for students who exhibited disruptive behaviors. However, due to lack of participation, this study examined teacher perceptions of their confidence to use behavioral interventions with students who are disruptive in the classroom and the relationship to the number of referrals teachers made to the school counselor. This study included 99 teachers from pre-K through 12th grade …
Perceived Employment Barriers Involving Program Managers Assisting Unemployed Young African American Males, Michael P. Williams
Perceived Employment Barriers Involving Program Managers Assisting Unemployed Young African American Males, Michael P. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
For unemployed, young, African American males who face significant barriers to jobs, public employment training centers have become a critical last option. For 2016, the U.S. federal government appropriated more than $6.9 billion to states for Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act programs and approximately $3.4 billion in federal formula funding for partner programs. The research problem in this study concerns the lack of adequate employment-based policies and programs that guide the workforce employment process between program managers and recipients, in particular, young, African American males. Guided by Ingram, Schneider, and DeLeon’s theory of social construction and policy design, this study examined …

Recovering Illicit Substance Users' Perspective About Mandatory Drug Testing In Schools, Julie Bowser
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to examine recovering substance
abusers' perceptions about the usefulness of mandatory drug testing in schools for adolescent substance abuse. Illegal substance abuse has reached epidemic proportions as more than half of U.S. adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years, have engaged in illicit drug use. Substance abuse information has been a part of school health education programs since the United States Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1986. Despite substance abuse education and school programs about the effects of drug use, many high school students abuse illicit drugs. Face-to-face interviews were conducted …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bullying has grown attention since the Columbine High School shooting; in April, 1999. Throughout the years, there has been an increase in aggressive behaviors including via the Internet across school districts in the United States. There was a gap in the literature regarding whether bullying-related school policies are enforced during school hours. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of middle school teachers about bullying. This study was steered by Husserl's phenomenological theory. Five middle school teachers were interviewed to gather information regarding their experiences with and perceptions of bullying based on behaviors and school policy …

Midwestern College Student Perceptions Of Police And The Power Of Names, Melessa Renee Henderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to explore, understand, and describe college student perceptions of the police based on if they grew up in rural or urban communities. Three aspects of college student perception of the police covered in this study are effectiveness, fairness, and legitimacy. Effectiveness may include police responsiveness and empathy as well as crime prevention and resolution. As opposed to internal biases, fairness is more external and may include equal treatment regardless of demographic differences. Lastly, legitimacy is more philosophical and revolves around the lawfulness of state power via police over a people. Researchers acknowledge that due …

Staff Engagement And Training In Supported Addiction Recovery Program For Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Hannah Carlson Jurewicz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The prevalence of substance use disorder (SUD) is similar among individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) and the general population, yet there is a disparity between treatment and outcomes for these two groups due to a lack of appropriately adapted treatment and staff training. The purpose of this case study was to examine how leaders in a behavioral health organization understand the engagement and training experience for staff who provide substance abuse treatment for individuals with ID/DD. Governance and operational data were collected and analyzed from internal archival sources and organizational leader interviews. Themes identified from coding indicated that …
Child Protection Workers' Experiences In Implementing Natural Mentoring With Older Foster Youth, Claudia Maxie
Child Protection Workers' Experiences In Implementing Natural Mentoring With Older Foster Youth, Claudia Maxie
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Emancipated foster youth are at risk for increased rates of unemployment, low educational attainment, reliance on public assistance, substance abuse, behavioral issues, homelessness, unplanned pregnancies, and illegal activities. Lack of connection to a caring adult when exiting foster care and emancipated foster youth's inadequate independent living skills are critical factors that could place young people at risk. Prior studies have shown that mentoring is a means of providing foster youth with protection against psychological stress and promoting well-being; however, mentoring is not a widely used intervention in the child welfare system. There is limited research on the process of implementing …

Efficacy Of Preventions And Interventions For At-Risk Students In Disciplinary Alternative Education Programs, Helga Venus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Students, who are repeatedly referred to Disciplinary Alternative Education Programs (DAEPs), are at risk for future school dropout and for feeding the pipeline from schools to prison. In the United States, this is true especially for minority students, and regardless of referral reasons or intervention efforts. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine attitudes of DAEP students and teachers regarding the influence of mandatory versus discretionary referrals, frequency and duration of referrals, and punitive versus creative interventions on positive behavioral outcomes. Data for the quantitative phase were collected via an online survey from public high …
Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, Zero-Tolerance Discipline, And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Lois V. Woods
Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative, Zero-Tolerance Discipline, And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Lois V. Woods
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Zero-tolerance discipline policies led to the introduction of police on school campuses and has resulted in a disproportionate number of in-school arrests and referrals of Black middle-school students, subjecting them to the school-to-prison pipeline. An abundance of data suggest the negative effects of zero tolerance; however, less is known regarding alternative evidence-based strategies such as the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI). Grounded in stage environment fit and labeling theoretical frameworks, the purpose of this study was to examine if JDAI status (pre-JDAI and post-JDAI) could predict arrests and referrals, while controlling for race, gender, and age. Secondary data were collected …

The Need For A Balanced System And More Community-Based Programs And Interventions In Juvenile Justice Reform In Georgia, Ebony R. Bullock
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research problem that this study addressed was the rising juvenile crime in Fulton County, Georgia. Georgia’s juvenile justice system went through a significant overhaul in 2013 that promised to reduce juvenile crime and recidivism, create more community-based interventions and programs, reduce the number of juveniles in out-of-home placement, and save taxpayers money. Despite the efforts put into place by House Bill 242 of 2013 (HB242), there was still an increase in juvenile crime, and there were not many community-based interventions and programs put into place. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of HB242 on juvenile …

Counterterrorism Strategies Used By Local Law Enforcement Agencies And Emergency Management Departments, Todd Andrew Schneeberger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractFor local law enforcement and local emergency managers, the threat of terrorist attacks in their communities is real. There are no anti-terrorism/counterterrorism strategies that are taught and used by local agencies. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore how small and midsize local law enforcement and emergency management departments prevent and interdict terrorism before it happens in their communities. Multiple streams theory and routine activities theory were used to guide the study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 10 participants from small and midsize agencies in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States. Findings …
Wrongful Conviction: Using Lived Experience To Explore Errors In Juror Cognition, Danielle Nicole Schulte Lewis
Wrongful Conviction: Using Lived Experience To Explore Errors In Juror Cognition, Danielle Nicole Schulte Lewis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractWrongful conviction is a pressing legal and social justice issue that requires scholarly attention in the United States. The role of jurors in the criminal justice system has been empirically investigated and debated for many decades as researchers attempt to understand the juror decision-making process and how jurors contribute to wrongful conviction. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore how errors in juror cognition during decision-making led to juror reliance on narrative construction and commonsense reasoning rather than legal and judicial instruction in wrongful conviction cases. In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 jurors who served on a criminal …

Failure to participate in rehabilitative programs during or after prison has led to increased recidivism, which, in turn, has contributed to overcrowded prisons and lack of rehabilitation services for offenders. The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative, regression study was to explore the relationship between inmates’ program participation (i.e., during prison education program, during prison drug treatment program, during prison alcohol treatment program, and during prison sex offense treatment program) by and subsequent recidivism. Banduras' social learning theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The study data were drawn from recidivism data of 38,624 prisoners who were released in 1994 …
Crisis Intervention Team Training: Full Implementation, Roy Garvin Taylor
Crisis Intervention Team Training: Full Implementation, Roy Garvin Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) encounter unique challenges when responding to calls involving an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) in crisis. In these situations, the LEOs are not merely acting in a law enforcement capacity but also taking on the roles of mental health workers, social workers, and other community support services. Unfortunately, most LEOs lack clear direction and training to effectively serve this unique population, with the typical encounter resulting in the arrest of the EDP and often ensuing in a vicious circle of arrest, incarceration, and recidivism. This phenomenological qualitative study used the perceptions of active Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) …

Patterns Of Victimization Of School-Aged Children With Autism In The Rural Southern United States, Megan Rae Marie Thornton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Individuals with disabilities experience victimization at rates higher than their typically-functioning peers. Because they are often perceived as unreliable reporters, the likelihood that victimizations of individuals with disabilities are reported is low. Data regarding the lived victimization experiences of individuals with specific disabilities are scant. Grounded in the rational choice theory and Cohen and Felson’s routine activity theory, this qualitative study investigated the victimization experiences of school-aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the rural Southern US. This study involved 21 public school students between the ages of 12 and 17 who were interviewed using the Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire, …

Understanding Characteristics Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Readmissions In An Acute Care Hospital, Jordan Danyale Brautigam
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) not only face difficulties managing their disease but are also faced with a higher risk of being readmitted to a hospital after an initial visit for acute exacerbation of their condition. Despite hospitals’ many attempts to offset this burden, readmission reduction programs are not effective. The purpose of this quantitative study was to further research an organization’s specific population surrounding patient comorbidities, reasons for readmissions, and demographic characteristics that may lend insight into reasons for readmissions. The research design was a retrospective analysis of a health system’s electronic medical record with a …
The Influence Of Community-Based Reentry Programs On Reintegrating Ex-Offenders In Ohio, Ebony Ann Ivery
The Influence Of Community-Based Reentry Programs On Reintegrating Ex-Offenders In Ohio, Ebony Ann Ivery
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Ex-offenders participate in community-based reentry programs to help transition back into society, yet some are still reoffending. Previous research suggested that community-based reentry programs need to be evaluated to successfully determine their influence on reintegrating ex-offenders. Limited research existed on the experiences of ex-offenders while taking part in such programs. The theory of effective correctional intervention was used to guide this general qualitative research study on Ohio community-based reentry programs. The following areas were addressed: (a) the role that community-based reentry programs play in addressing the needs of ex-offenders; (b) barriers and limitations that community-based reentry programs face in meeting …
