Pink Bamboo Ceiling: Barriers And Breakthroughs For Asian American Women Leaders, Mele W. Kramer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAsian Americans are the most diverse and fastest-growing minority group in the U.S. and have the highest average level of education of all minority and dominant groups in America making up 6.2 % of the labor market. However, Asian Americans overall hold one percent of the executive leadership roles in Fortune 500 organizations. Low leadership representation leaves this demographic without a decision-making voice and without power in society. How Social Workers In Long Term Care Facilities In The State Of Florida Assist Lgbt Aging Adults To Acclimate To Each Other And The Facility, Katherine Louise Curci-Degaro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The elderly LGBT community is growing in the State of Florida, and some members of this group face inequalities when accessing long-term care services. Social workers play an important role in assisting residents to acclimate to their settings, and without their involvement, LGBT older adults may be forced back into secrecy regarding their sexual orientation. For social workers in long term care facilities, understanding how discrimination, oppression, and stigma interacted in the lives of these LGBT older adults is important in understanding these adults and their experiences in long-term care facilities. This doctoral project used a qualitative research design. Fifteen …

The Association Of Suicidality With Video Gaming And Physical Inactivity Among U.S. Adolescents, Mary Colleen Cyrus
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Suicide represents a leading cause of death in U.S. young people, and the rate is increasing. Although young people are spending more time each day playing video or computer games, there is limited research on the association, if any, between playing video games and suicidality. The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a statistically significant association between video gaming, physical inactivity, and suicidality (suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts). Age, race, gender, and being bullied electronically and in school were assessed as potential confounding variables. The interpersonal theory of suicidal behavior and the social-ecological theory served as …
Conceptions Of Service Provider Preparedness, Aaron Engstrom
Conceptions Of Service Provider Preparedness, Aaron Engstrom
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Victims of human trafficking often need a variety of services to recover from their experiences. Service providers are organizations that aim to meet the personal and environmental needs of survivors by providing resources and guidance. However, the efficacy of services offered to survivors has not been robustly studied, which could leave unsuccessful survivor outcomes unnoticed. The purpose of this case study was to learn how service provider employees prepared to meet survivors’ needs. The combination of social cognitive theory and social constructionist theory served as the lens through which service provider employee conceptions of preparedness were explored. Four service provider …

Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Texas veterans transitioning to civilian life have experienced health issues after discharge. There are processes to follow before seeking treatment or diagnosis for any health issue prior to military discharge. Given the gaps in the literature on veteran health, quality of life and transition to civilian life, scholars lack understanding of the transitional events that take place. Veteran health issues are impacted by medical appointment wait-times, day to day life events, and this can lead to decreased quality of life. The purpose of this mixed-methods study (N=36) was to evaluate veterans’ health related quality of life who had transitioned from …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Breast cancer is a global public health issue, and oncology healthcare providers (OHPs’) play a pivotal role in ensuring access to cancer care for their patient population. Strategies have been introduced to reduce this gap, and they still have not addressed the needs of Caribbean women of color, who tend to be diagnosed after developing late-stage breast cancer. No previous studies have explored OHPs' perceptions and lived experiences regarding barriers to healthcare service delivery and access for Caribbean women of color …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social media is a medium of communication worldwide, but it is not clear whether there is a relationship between depression and the use of social media. The purpose of this research was to explore this possible relationship. The stress generation hypothesis of depression (SGHD) states that people with depression encounter higher rates of stress than their nondepressed counterparts. In the context of social media, people with depressive symptoms may use social media in ways that increase their stress and worsen their depressive symptoms. To test this hypothesis, this study was designed to determine whether a higher level of maladaptive Facebook …
