Educators’ Perception Of Their Psychosocial Support Of Elementary Students In Gabon, Africa, Michel Ikamba

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Although educators internationally have often provided care to vulnerable students who struggle to meet the needs of nutrition, health, protection, and access to essential social services, no formal social systems exist in Gabon to aid educators who work with these students. In the absence of relevant local research and drawing on Dewey’s theory of progressive education as a conceptual model, this basic qualitative study asked about educators’ perceptions in limited resource elementary schools in Gabon of the social needs and strategies employed with students who demonstrated signs of disengagement and alienation. Qualitative data collection included semi-structured recorded interviews with 12 …

Challenges For Hospital Leadership In Obtaining Urology And Otolaryngology Community Preceptors, Donna Orsatti

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Healthcare organizations are becoming more complex and medical education is constantly evolving in response to healthcare needs. These changes have an impact on community preceptors that supervise and train medical residents. Physicians willing to engage in community-based precepting are decreasing, thereby making it difficult for students to complete medical specializations. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the challenges healthcare leaders face when attempting to secure practicums or residencies in urology and otolaryngology. This case study used the Baldrige Excellence Framework as a lens to understand the organization’s functioning within the educational healthcare sector. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were …

Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese Jan 2022

Military Emergency And Critical Care Nurses’ Lived Experiences Of Resilience, Carla Ann Wiese

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Resilience has been studied across a myriad of populations. Many resilience studies have focused on military service members, including military healthcare personnel, specifically nurses. Qualitative studies have focused solely on spiritual resilience, although mixed methods studies have identified other resilience characteristics. The aim of this descriptive phenomenological study was to identify resilience characteristics through rich description within the situational and philosophical patterns of resilience and gain a better understanding of how emergency and critical care military nurses honed resilience in the face of …

Abstract Those who identify as members of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) communities have been victims of bias and prejudicial attitudes. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore social workers’ perceptions of intersectional invisibility when working with Black LGBTQIA+ clients and the strategies that social workers identify as beneficial in averting discrimination and bias when working with this community. Implicit bias theory and intersectionality theory …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

According to health care reports, more than 250,000 deaths annually are attributed to medical error, prompting interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives as one way to improve healthcare delivery. The problem is that little is known about the effect of simulation learning with standardized patients on occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) students’ attitudes toward IPE. The purpose of this causal-comparative study using a pretest–posttest nonequivalent control group design was to investigate the difference in posttest scores on the Students’ Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education—Version 2 (SPICE-R2) between first-term graduate OT and PT students who participated in a simulation and those …

Self-Efficacy And Caseload As Predictors Of School Counselor Burnout, Marcos G. Casares Jan 2022

Self-Efficacy And Caseload As Predictors Of School Counselor Burnout, Marcos G. Casares

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

School counselors are faced with many job duties, including supporting students’ academic, career, and emotional needs; maintaining these duties can increase stress and lead to burnout. The need to provide high-quality services to students, along with a high caseload, may be associated with the self-efficacy beliefs of school counselors and the possibility of burnout. However, there has been little to no interest in researching the subject of burnout, and its causes and outcomes concerning school counselors. The purpose of this quantitative study was to fill this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between school counselor burnout, specifically, the …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and community members of the host country make decisions regarding refugee lifestyles during and post-resettlement rather than the refugee women themselves. The conceptual framework of wilderness treatment with a focus on the wilderness experience, as well as on the physical, social, and psychosocial aspects of participant functioning guided this study. In this qualitative study, a semistructured interview guide was used to elicit the thoughts of five master’s level social workers (MSWs) regarding …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The perceptions of human services case workers toward their racial minority clients may affect the quality of service that racial minority families who are involved in the child welfare system receive. In the child welfare system, some African American families are not offered services that are culturally sensitive or tailored to their race or ethnicity. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore human services case workers’ perceptions of offering culturally appropriate, evidence-based services to their African American and racial minority clients in an Upper Midwest urban setting in the United States. Family systems theory was used to …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

For decades, the representation of adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses (SPMI) in the criminal justice system has steadily grown despite public recognition and increased federal implementation of mental health courts and diversion programs. Though more is known about risk factors associated with psychiatric and criminal recidivism among this population, a gap in the literature remains on collaborative interventions and continuity of care between inpatient mental health and criminal justice facilities. Grounded in resilience theory, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine challenges social workers faced when attempting to facilitate discharge planning between inpatient mental health facilities …
