Tetanus Immunity Among Adults In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Sue K. Gerber
Tetanus Immunity Among Adults In The Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Sue K. Gerber
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although tetanus is not a contagious disease, it can be deadly for people who are exposed and do
not have protective immunity against tetanus, which can be acquired only through vaccination.
Most studies on adult tetanus protective immunity are from high-income countries; limited
studies occur in Africa, and none has been reported from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
(DRC). This study sought to determine protective immunity against tetanus among adults in
DRC in relation to their age, sex, place of residence, and for women, antenatal care. The primary
purpose of this observational cross-sectional study using a nested serosurvey within …

Examining The Effect Of Substance Use Training On Registered Nurses’ Competency And Self-Efficacy, Myrtle Harrison Greene
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Substance abuse and addiction among nurses remains a problem and can have lasting and sometimes fatal effects on patients. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study is to examine the effect of substance use training on RNs’ post training competency about substance use impairment and level of self-efficacy to deal with impaired colleagues. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory (SET) which originated from Bandura’s social cognitive theory provided the theoretical foundation. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 118 registered nurses using the Perceived Competency with Impaired Nurses survey, the Methods for Dealing with Nurse Impairment Questionnaire (MDNIQ) and a demographic questionnaire. …
Effects Of Race And Gender On Strengths And Difficulties Questionnaire Scores, Amanda Haas
Effects Of Race And Gender On Strengths And Difficulties Questionnaire Scores, Amanda Haas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Researchers can use the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-Teacher Form (SDQ-TF) for ages 4 to 10 as a behavioral screening tool to determine the severity of a child’s problematic behaviors; however, SDQ-TF is subject to potential rater biases. Implicit bias refers to people remaining unaware of their biases, which may influence the ways that student behaviors are rated. Therefore, this study was conducted to measure the effect of race and gender congruency on teacher ratings of student problematic behaviors by the total difficulties score using the SDQ-TF 4-10. A nonprobability convenience sample of 98 teachers in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area …

Community-Based Workers’ Treatment And Relationship With African American Men With Dual Diagnosis, André V. Haley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Helping professionals have a role as service providers when working with African American men with dual diagnosis and incarceration histories. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to understand how helping professionals provided community-based treatment and established a helper/helpee relationship with this population of African American men. Hirschi’s social control theory provided the framework for the study. Semistructured interviews were used to collect data from 9 helping professionals who worked with this population in the Northeast United States. Yin’s 5-step model for case studies was used for data analysis and thematic coding. Findings indicated that professionals lacked competency …
Epidemiology Of Marijuana Use And Mental Health In The Context Of Changing Policies, David G. Harvey Ii
Epidemiology Of Marijuana Use And Mental Health In The Context Of Changing Policies, David G. Harvey Ii
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a growing body of evidence supporting the association between cannabis use and the development of mental health disorders, but few studies have addressed this association following the recent increase in marijuana legalization laws. Therefore, using the social ecological model and the self-medication theory of addiction as theoretical frameworks, the purpose of this retrospective database study was to assess the relationship between marijuana use and major depression and suicidal ideation in both adults and adolescents in 2008 and 2017. Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health were analyzed using logistic regression at the p < .05 threshold for statistical significance. Results demonstrated positive, statistically significant relationships between marijuana use and both major depression and suicidal ideation for both adults and adolescents in both 2008 and 2017. Further, the strengths of these relationships generally increased between 2008 and 2017, coincident with the increase in marijuana legalization laws. These findings provide empirical support to the association between cannabis use and the development of mental health disorders, and that the strength of these associations is increasing following the increase in marijuana legalization laws. This study has important implication for positive social change by identifying significant relationships between cannabis use and the development of mental health disorders and revealing that these relationships are strengthening over time, coincident with the increase in marijuana legalization laws.
Perceptions Of Clinical Adjunct Instructor Preparedness In Nurse Education, Melissa Ann Harvey
Perceptions Of Clinical Adjunct Instructor Preparedness In Nurse Education, Melissa Ann Harvey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This project study addressed the perceptions of novice adjunct clinical instructors as they transition from clinician to novice educator within an associate degree nursing program in Ohio. Lack of formal training in educational preparation has caused the disorientation of effective supervisory practices in the clinical setting and prevents the optimal transfer of knowledge from educators to nursing students. Mezirow’s transformative adult learning theory and Schoening’s nurse educator transition model were the two conceptual frameworks that guided this study. A qualitative exploratory research design was used to study the role transition process and perceptions of supervision, challenges, and strategies or support. …

Prisoner Reentry And Recidivism: Access To Reentry Programs And Reducing Recidivism For African American, Male Ex-Offenders, Tracee Leigh Harvey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has primarily been centered around the reentry process and programs available to those incarcerated in prison; however, those incarcerated in jails and the reentry programs available has been underrepresented in the field of study. The Jails to Jobs initiative is intended to combat the reentry barriers faced by ex-offenders by offering reentry services while incarcerated as well as transitional services upon release to address the barriers to reentry. However, the problem exists due to the effectiveness of the reentry programs and their ability to provide adequate services that address the needs of African American, male ex-offenders, and, in turn, …

Understanding Impostor Phenomena In Hispanic Students From Three Different Learning Environments, Marie Hernandez-Seltz
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Hispanic college student retention and dropout rates are regarded as social and economic crises in the United States. Research studies with minority students suggest Hispanic students may feel out of place. Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a psychological pattern involving feeling like a fraud that may explain their experience. Several studies with minority students suggest IP and learning environment (LE) may be correlated. Other minority student studies indicate an association between ethnic identity (EI) and IP. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between IP, EI, and LE in a Hispanic university student population. The theoretical …

Organizational Climate And Employee Engagement, Romie Mejalli
Organizational Climate And Employee Engagement, Romie Mejalli
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Although research shows that disengaged employees contribute to increased health and hiring costs in for-profit organizations, there is a gap in the literature concerning the relationship between organizational climate (OC) and employee engagement (EE) in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). In this study, it was hypothesized that employee answers to the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale-17 (UWES-17) and OC surveys (for example, of management styles and innovation) would predict EE in a NPO. The study further addressed the question of whether age or the division in which the employees worked influenced the relationship between OC and EE. Kahn’s engagement theory served as the …

Lived Experiences Of Gay Men And Barriers To Reporting Intimate Partner Violence, Nicola A. Seahorn
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gay men encounter barriers when reporting same-sex intimate partner violence (IPV) to officials. This phenomenon is vital to address, given that IPV impacts gay men more than others in the LGBTQ community, with gay men making 31.5% of the IPV reports among that population. The identified gap in the literature showed the lack of research regarding the lived experiences of barriers encountered by gay men in reporting IPV, which was the purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study. Merten’s strain theory served as a framework to answer the study’s two research questions on how barriers in reporting IPV affect gay men’s …
