Coping Strategies Linked To African Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Gabrielle Lawrence
Coping Strategies Linked To African Americans With Chronic Kidney Disease, Gabrielle Lawrence
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a health problem that affects African Americans more often than Whites and other ethnic groups. Individuals with CKD need to develop strategies to help with the disease and life challenges. Social support, self-management, and self-efficacy are factors that may influence how individuals with CKD cope with the disease. This quantitative correlational study examined the relationships among self-management, self-efficacy, and coping behaviors in African Americans with CKD in Stages 3 or 4. In addition, the moderating effect of social support on the extent to which self-management and self-efficacy account for the variance of coping behaviors in …
Bullying Experienced By Newly Graduated Registered Nurses In Long Term Care, Valeria Linetski
Bullying Experienced By Newly Graduated Registered Nurses In Long Term Care, Valeria Linetski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Bullying toward newly graduated registered nurses (NGRNs) is a global concern that impacts various health care settings. Long term care (LTC) setting received minimal attention related to bullying experienced by registered nurses. NGRN’s face difficulty integrating into practice due to bullying experiences which causes them to quit, change jobs and even leave the profession, which further contributes to the nursing shortage and high turnover rates. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to address the knowledge gap in the literature by exploring NGRNs lived experiences of bullying as they transition into practice in LTC. Exploring bullying experienced by NGRN’s …
Predicting Patient Satisfaction Using Hospital Performance Characteristics, Vanna Lombardi-Gillies
Predicting Patient Satisfaction Using Hospital Performance Characteristics, Vanna Lombardi-Gillies
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Performance related to patient satisfaction is becoming a significant factor in determining reimbursement for hospital-based services. Furthermore, consumers are increasingly accessing publicly available quality and patient experience information to make decisions about where to receive care. Understanding which hospital characteristics influence patient satisfaction is critical to the healthcare administrator to ensure the financial viability of the organization and to meet the needs and expectations of the community. Many studies have examined the relationship between a single performance characteristic and patient satisfaction. This secondary data quantitative study used regression analysis to analyze the relationship between three hospital performance characteristics (i.e., the …

Effectiveness Of Responsible Beverage Service Policies In Reducing Drunk-Driving In Maryland, Rhoda Makinde
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the State of Maryland and across the United States, driving under the influence (DUI) has led to a massive loss of lives and disability cases. Hence, responsible beverage service (RBS) policies and programs have been developed to prevent and control DUI incidence. This study sought to identify the effectiveness of these policies in addressing the DUI-related fatalities and injuries among young adults (18–30 years old) in the State of Maryland. Using program theory to evaluate the effectiveness of RBS policies and programs in reducing DUI, this qualitative research sampled bar patrons, club patrons, and alcohol servers/service staff in Baltimore. …

Executive Job Motivation: A Non-Profit Perspective, Jacques Kalume Mambo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractNonprofit organization (NPO) executives, who serve others while accepting substantial salary and benefit packages, may be motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic elements of their job satisfaction. Yet little is known about the extent to which executives are motivated by altruism alone or by financial compensation and other extrinsic rewards. The purpose of this quantitative study was to test the extent to which intrinsic and extrinsic motivation was correlated with the job satisfaction of NPO executives. The theoretical framework was Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory, which suggest NPO executives may be solely satisfied through intrinsic motivation. A stratified random sample of …

There is a need for evidence-based nonpharmacological nursing management skills fordementia that are low-cost and effective in managing common symptoms such as agitation. Music-based therapy is a nonpharmacological intervention shown by evidencebased studies to be effective in the management of dementia. The gap in practice is that there was no evidence-based group music therapy programs in this family-based long- term care setting for dementia patients. This project employed a multidisciplinary effort to formulate an evidence-based clinical practice guideline for implementing group music therapy program. The clinical practice question was whether a multidisciplinary team can agree on the guideline for implementing …

The practice problem this doctoral project addressed was the misuse of opiates and the alarming number of intentional and unintentional overdose deaths that occur yearly as a result. The practice-focused question was the following: Providing education on the use of the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocol to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in this practice setting will increase both knowledge and confidence in using the MAT protocol? The health belief model and The Johns Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model were used as the framework for this project. Exploring The Lived Experiences Of Human Resources Managers Hiring Applicants With Past Criminal Convictions, Semone Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Felony convictions leave ex-offenders searching for employment but are regularly denied jobs due to their status as past felons. Inability to obtain employment has been shown to increase recidivism. The research problem was that the hiring managers' perception of the applicants with past criminal convictions could distort their hiring decisions. This qualitative descriptive phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of seven human resources managers within New York City through random sampling. This study's conceptual framework was grounded in Durkheim's labeling and Goffman's social stigma theories. The research question asked what the lived experiences of hiring managers were when …

Nurses are key health professionals in long-term care facilities who have an essential role in providing compassionate care at the end-of-life. The customary education that nurses receive in end-of-life care is inadequate to meet the complex care of dying patients. The purpose of this scholarly project was to implement an evidence-based end-of-life educational program to improve the nursing staff knowledge, attitudes towards care of the dying, and standards in long-term care. The theoretical framework to guide this project is Bandura’s self-efficacy to support the confidence and attitude of nurses caring for the dying. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure the effects of the nontraditional predictors, age, gender, and ethnicity on completing a 2-year associate degree within 6 years for FMCSs. The research questions determined whether nontraditional predictors for success were the same for FMCSs. Knowles’s theory of andragogy provided the framework …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the United States experience a significant financial burden in managing their condition due to prescription medication, higher out-of-pocket (OOP) costs, number of prescribed medications, and health insurance status to stay compliant with their medications. This study examined the association between the alternative medication cost-saving strategies, including obtaining free samples from doctors or patient assistance programs, splitting pills or changing dosage frequency, purchasing from other countries, purchasing over the internet, and the three independent variables among adults diagnosed with T2D. Reasoned action approach theory helped guide how external factors may influence an alternative medication …

Links Between Screen Tim, Montessori Preschool Exposure, And Working Memory, Paula Lyn Larsen Mamani
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A high-quality, foundational education offers lifelong benefits for young children. The problem is that working memory in pre-school-aged children is declining and could be impaired by the extraneous cognitive load imposed during engagement with screen media apps and/or preschool programs. Although the pedagogical practices associated with Montessori preschool programs have been found supportive of cognitive load germane to learning and improved working memory, they have not been fully considered in relation to preschoolers' screen media use. The cognitive load created by screen media apps could affect their usefulness as learning tools. The purpose of this quantitative study was to discover …
