The Barriers Social Workers Face During The Discharge Of Hospital Patients, Nykke Flaum

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study investigated the psychosocial barriers hospital patients face that would delay their discharge. A delay in discharge can stop new patient admissions, cause further illness to the patient, and cost the hospital money, amongst other issues. Social workers are there as part of the multidisciplinary team to reduce the barriers and length of stay. One of the ways to do this is to detect the psychosocial issue early on in a patient’s admission so that it does not delay the discharge. Social workers investigate these issues during the discharge planning process and while conducting assessments. This study utilized structured …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are thought to be influenced by environmental, genetic, and maternal factors, including potential links to periconceptional folic acid. This quantitative case-control study, guided by the life course theory, explored the association of maternal risk factors (age, race, education, income, folate status, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, and MTHFR mutation) on the precipitation of ASD in offspring. The sample comprised 96 mothers of children with ASD and 143 mothers of children without ASD. Logistic regression analysis indicated no significant association between maternal folate status and ASD (OR = 1.00, 95% CI [1.000, 0.001], p = .755). Mothers with …

Black women are more likely than women of any other race in the United States to undergo an abdominal hysterectomy instead of a less invasive and less damaging laparoscopic or robotic procedure for benign fibroids. Although Black women are the population most disparately affected by benign fibroids, as evidenced by higher morbidity and mortality rates due to complications, they are often excluded in clinical research. The DMC phenomenon is well documented in the 159 counties in the State of Georgia juvenile justice system. Although numerous researchers have investigated the role of county-level variables in the creation of these racial disparities, these researchers have not discovered any explanations for differences in outcomes from one county to another county within the same state based on the diversity of the county population or police departments in each county. The purpose of this quantitative study was …

Researchers have explored motivation and ambition; however, there is little or no research comparing motivation and ambition between adolescent mothers and child-free women. The purpose of this casual-comparative study was to compare motivation levels and ambition values between adolescent mothers, age 18-24, and women of the same age range who are child-free. Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory as the theoretical lens, and the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and Aspirations Index, were used as data collection instruments. Recruitment …
