Race As A Predictor Of Co-Rumination In Friendship Among Adolescents, Jendayi A. Stafford
Race As A Predictor Of Co-Rumination In Friendship Among Adolescents, Jendayi A. Stafford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Co-rumination refers to the excessive and extensive discussion and revisiting of problems and negative feelings within dyadic relationships. Differences in friendships concerning co-rumination have found that girls co-ruminate more than boys, however, researchers have not examined the relations between the racial composition of friend dyads and co-rumination in the friendships of adolescents. Theoretical frameworks included response styles theory and fictive kin theory. The study involved secondary analyses of an archival data set in which adolescents responded to surveys about co-rumination and their same-sex friendships. The population used for the study consisted of 265 adolescent friend dyads from a town in …

Comparison Of Cultural Self-Efficacy Between Urban And Rural Nurse Educators, Denise Rene Morris
Comparison Of Cultural Self-Efficacy Between Urban And Rural Nurse Educators, Denise Rene Morris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Integration of an inclusive educational environment requires nursing faculty to embrace a transformational change in academics. The cultural interactions of an educator teaching in an urban district may differ from the relations experienced by a rural nurse educator. The purpose of this quantitative study, guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, was to determine whether there is a difference between the cultural self-efficacy scores of nurse faculty teaching in a rural location compared to those in an urban location as well as whether the demographics of age, ethnic background, and years in the nursing profession predict cultural self-efficacy scores. Nursing faculty …

This basic qualitative study with semistructured interviews examined MIECHV staffs’ perspectives on the reasons for high withdrawals. The purpose of this study was to examine MIECHV program staff members’ perspectives on the reasons for the high withdrawal. The study was guided by Mowder’s parent development theory (PDT) and examined parenting as a continual process whereby parents constantly adjusted their parenting …
Implicit Motivations In Personality Systems Interactions Predictive Of Burnout In Mental Health Professionals, Yi-Chien Hung
Implicit Motivations In Personality Systems Interactions Predictive Of Burnout In Mental Health Professionals, Yi-Chien Hung
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Burnout among mental health professionals (MHPs) has been of interest to scholars and practitioners since the 1970s. For MHPs, burnout leads to less effective client treatment outcomes, increased turnover rate, and decreased overall wellbeing. Despite a significant body of literature on MHP burnout, there is little literature on how MHPs’ implicit motivations (IMs) may influence and contribute to their burnout. Understanding how IMs correlate with burnout may help with self-awareness and specific therapeutic treatments, both of which are important in preventing and alleviating burnout. Grounded in motive disposition theory, personality systems interaction theory, and theory on dimensions of burnout, this …

Hbcu Students’ Experience With Remote And Blended Learning Amid Covid-19, Andrew Sivan Mclear
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractLittle peer-reviewed literature existed on how the transition from face-to-face instruction to emergency remote teaching (ERT), online learning, and blended learning impacted the education of historically Black college and university (HBCU) students amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The gap in the literature was significant given the longstanding challenges HBCUs faced, which threatened their existence, and the disproportionate effect Covid-19 had on minority populations. This interpretive descriptive qualitative study explored the experiences of 10 HBCU students from six HBCUs across the United States using Garrison et al.'s community of inquiry framework to understand the participants' perceptions of the teaching, social, and cognitive …
Leadership Strategies For Sustaining Membership In Southern Baptist Churches, George L. Blount Jr.
Leadership Strategies For Sustaining Membership In Southern Baptist Churches, George L. Blount Jr.
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Church membership is declining, and the number of Americans identifying as having no religious affiliation is increasing. Church members can provide for a community’s spiritual and financial needs and promote the growth of evangelical believers and biblical stewardship. However, some pastors, ministerial staff, and ministry leaders lack effective leadership strategies to sustain membership. Grounded in transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore leadership strategies Southern Baptist church leaders from three churches in Pennsylvania use to sustain membership. Participants were three church leaders who sustained church membership for 3 years or longer. Data were …

Programs That Impact Juvenile Recidivism Beyond Mandatory Sanctions, John M. Marras
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recidivism, especially juvenile recidivism, has been a major concern for the United States. In fact, 10.6% of the total U.S. population was composed of juveniles between the ages of 10 and 17 in the year 2009. The statistics have shown that juvenile recidivism is one of the key issues in the country that needs to be addressed. The purpose of this study was to isolate the youth programs that affect juvenile recidivism beyond their successful completion. The theoretical foundation of the study derived from Agnew’s general strain theory, which suggests focusing on factors that lead to delinquency and the commission …

Oncology Nurses’ Experiences Dealing With And Managing Compassion Fatigue While Caring For Terminally Ill Patients, Stacey-Ann Mary Whyte
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compassion fatigue (CF) is a significant cause of nurse burnout (BO). Oncology nurses are particularly susceptible to CF because of the continual contact with terminally ill patients and recurrent experiences with patients’ death. A search of existing literature found no published studies that explicitly focused on interviewing oncology nurses to gain their expression of their lived experiences with CF while caring for terminally ill patients. This phenomenological qualitative study explored oncology nurses’ experiences dealing with and managing CF when caring for terminally ill patients. Figley’s compassion fatigue theory grounded this study. The research questions focused on the lived experiences of …

Closing The Knowledge Gap For Advanced Practice Nurses On Medical Cannabis, Regina Bernice Askew-Gibbs
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractSince cannabis, also called marijuana, has been decriminalized or legalized as a prescription for medical purposes, more patients are using cannabis recreationally for medical purposes or as a holistic therapeutic approach in contrast to Western medicine. With increased use among patients, it has become important for the advanced practice nurse (APN) to have a basic knowledge of the therapeutic benefits of marijuana. The goal of this DNP project was to supply APNs with education on marijuana and cannabis to prevent poor patient assessment and education. Pre-and posttest data from 6 participants who work at a medical, ambulatory clinical site, were …

Implementation Of Response To Intervention In An Urban Elementary School, Carla P. Graham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn an urban Midwestern elementary school, the teachers and administrators were perplexed by the rise in special education referrals even with the implementation of response to intervention (RTI). The problem addressed in this study is the general education teachers’ implementation of RTI to identify if there were any gaps in practice and, if so, to create a plan that could correct those gaps and potentially decrease the number of special education referrals and students identified for special education services. The conceptual framework for this study was the multitiered system of support, of which RTI is one component. Four research questions …

Effect Of A Stress Management Module On First-Year Osteopathic Medical Students’ Stress Levels, Yasmine Mignon Hill
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medical students have consistently identified medical school as a stressful experience. Although studies show stress management to be beneficial for helping students alleviate stress, few studies have been conducted with osteopathic medicine (DO) students as participants. The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to assess the effect of participation in a 4-week stress management module on first-year DO students’ stress levels. This study was grounded in Quick and Quick’s preventive stress management theory and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, which together suggest that early recognition of stress and consistent stress management coping mechanisms are beneficial for altering and sustaining stress levels. For …

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the employee wellness policy, as implemented in the state of Oregon in 2018, in reducing stress and improving the health of correctional officers. This study was guided by the perceived organizational support theory, which holds that employees develop existential views about how much their employer values their contributions and …
Adolescent Bereavement After Sudden Loss Of A Close Friend, Alora Elizabeth Zulliger
Adolescent Bereavement After Sudden Loss Of A Close Friend, Alora Elizabeth Zulliger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the prevalence of sudden death in adolescence, there is a deficiency of resources and support for adolescents who have lost a close friend to premature death. These resources are vital, as the sudden and unexpected death of a close friend is often traumatizing and can contribute to a sense of instability in young people. Although a great deal of academic research has been conducted on sibling or parental grief during adolescence, there existed a need for further research on peer loss during adolescence. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to describe the essence and meaning of the lived …
