Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo
Relationship Between Cultural Barriers, Adaptation Mechanisms, And Quality Of Life Among Congolese Refugees, Ndasi Zialo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Refugee cultural backgrounds are different from the primary culture in which they live. Cultural barriers have been identified as contributing factors to disparities in mental health services among refugees in the host country. They face racism, discrimination, and marginalization that impede their access to mental health services compared to the host populations. The Western model of mental health services was developed for the unique needs of the European refugees and could not always meet the needs of the non-European refugee populations. The lack of culturally specific mental health services creates disparities in mental health services that affect the quality of …

Co-Occurring Disorders In The Juvenile Justice System: Clinicians’ Attitudes, Skills, And Knowledge, Wendi Watson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders have been found to contribute to delinquent and criminal behavior leading to higher rates of incarceration. Although this problem is increasingly recognized within the juvenile justice system and the social work profession, very little is known about how knowledgeable social workers are with respect to treating co-occurring disorders. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between social workers' clinical experience (i.e., years of experience), level of education, and type of licensure and perceived clinical competence when serving youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders in the juvenile justice …

Association Between High Health Literacy, Doctor's Recommendation, And Prostate Cancer Screening Among Men In The United States, Felicia Njideka Akunna
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
To efficiently identify and prevent the advancement of prostate cancer and decrease mortality rates, it is crucial to examine the impact of health literacy. Despite potential advantages associated with enhanced health literacy and early detection, the United States continues to witness a significant rise in both new prostate cancer cases and mortality rates, emphasizing the severity of the condition. However, it is unclear if those with high health literacy are discouraged from participating in prostate cancer screening due to the risks associated with screening. Based on the stimulus organism response model, 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data were analyzed …

Factors That Influence Elementary School Teachers Who Refer Students To Special, La' Trina Dudley
Factors That Influence Elementary School Teachers Who Refer Students To Special, La' Trina Dudley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is an overrepresentation of African American students in special education classes; placing African Americans disproportionately in special education classes lowers their self-esteem and compromises their academic performance. This study aimed to increase understanding of the meaning-making processes elementary school general education teachers use to refer African American students for special education services. I used critical race theory (CRT) to support the study, which suggests that structural racism in schools harms African American students' self-esteem and academic achievement. Two research questions directed the study: What are the decision-making processes of elementary school teachers who refer African American students for special …

Adhd And Chronic Anhedonia: Antecedents Of Treatment-Resistant Depression And Suicidality In Adults, Tia Sternat
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a chronic and debilitating disorder. Approximately 280 million people live with depression, and more than 700,000 lives are lost due to suicide each year. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a severe form of depression which is highly correlated with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) and associated with increased suicidality. Anhedonia, the reduced ability to experience pleasure, is associated with various psychiatric conditions, including ADHD. The theoretical framework for this study was the biopsychosocial model. Depression may be diagnosed in accordance with a defined cluster of symptoms, and/or how symptoms are experienced vary by individuals …

Staff Education To Enhance Healthcare Providers' Use Of The Phq-9 Assessment Tool, Priscilia Nguh
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a common mental health issue that has a substantial impact on people’s well-being and healthcare results. While there is ample evidence of depression’s harmful impact, the difficulty of accurate diagnosis remains. Inadequate screening of depression in primary health clinics results in treatment delays. The PHQ-9 is a tool to diagnose depression, however many clinicians are unfamiliar with its use. As a result, individuals susceptible to depression may not receive timely appropriate management, leading to poor health outcomes and higher healthcare utilization. This practice focused project aimed to understand if staff education would improve healthcare providers’ knowledge regarding use …

Relationship Between Student Physical Therapist Pain Knowledge, Beliefs, And Self-Efficacy Assessing And Treating Pain, Ryan Morgan Reed
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that affects a large percentage of the population. According to recent studies, chronic pain management is best treated using a biopsychosocial (BPS) non-pharmacological approach rather than a biomedical (BM) approach. Student Physical Therapists (SPTs) trained in a BPS approach have different beliefs about pain than those trained in the BM approach. Beliefs about pain are related to pain knowledge and self-efficacy for treating pain patients. To date, no study has examined these three variables together or explored differences in BM versus BPS beliefs in relationship to the other two variables. Guided by social cognitive …
Socioeconomic Determinants And Maternal Mortality In Liberia, Monee Sherman
Socioeconomic Determinants And Maternal Mortality In Liberia, Monee Sherman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
High rates of pregnancies and childbirth contribute to a heightened risk of maternal mortality among women between 15 and 49 in Liberia. Most women are uninformed about their maternal risk behaviors, symptom severity, and delayed care-seeking. The mortality rate for women between 25 and 34 during pregnancy and childbirth is unacceptably high. The highest increase in maternal mortality rates is seen among women between 40 and 44 who choose to delay motherhood. In Liberia, the deaths of 4.5 women a day are caused by complications during pregnancy and childbirth. We examined the influence of participant background characteristics, socioeconomic factors, and …
Predictors Of Antisocial Behavior Among Hispanic Adults, Mara Page
Predictors Of Antisocial Behavior Among Hispanic Adults, Mara Page
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Antisocial behavior can lead to serious social and legal consequences such as long-term involvement in criminal activities. Although there has been much research on predictors of antisocial behavior, such as perceived economic status, parental communication, impulsivity, substances, parenting styles, and parental involvement, little has been researched on how these apply to the Hispanic population. Grounded in Gottfredson and Hirschi’s general crime theory, the purpose of this nonexperimental correlational survey design study was to assess whether sensation-seeking behavior, self-control, parental monitoring, religious coping, perceived social support, and rugged resilience predicted antisocial behavior among Hispanic adults. A sample of 167 Hispanic adult …

Teachers’ Perspectives Of Readiness, Academic, And Social Skills Of First Graders Who Did Not Attend Kindergarten, Kathryn Mary Hogan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research suggests that kindergarten attenders benefit from the time spent learning basic academic and social skills. Skills students learn in kindergarten lead to skills taught in first grade and school readiness; however, many children do not attend kindergarten. The problem under study was that records indicate that many students do not attend kindergarten, and so may not be ready for first grade. The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of first grade teachers in a southeastern U.S. state regarding the readiness for first grade of students whose entry records indicate they did not attend kindergarten. Pianta’s theory …

Exploring Leadership Characteristics And Their Effects On Sustaining Federally Qualified Health Centers, Eleace E. Sawyers
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
An argument can be made for the continued existence of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) because of the level of importance of the service they provide to society. The problem addressed in this research is that despite the millions of people in need of affordable health care, the leaders of many FQHCs are fighting to keep facilities open amidst financial struggles. The purpose of this research was to identify leadership characteristics that promote FQHCs’ success by assessing effective leadership styles. This study applied a quantitative, descriptive non-experimental approach. Probability sampling was used to select the sample size and the Multifactor …

Anticipatory Grief Narratives Of Caregivers Of Children With Cockayne Syndrome, Emily T. Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Knowledge of the impending death of a loved one has been connected with experiences of anticipatory grief. Specific grief experiences such as caring for a parent with dementia and caring for a child with cancer have been explored. Other rarely occurring anticipatory grief experiences have yet to be explored. The occurrence of Cockayne syndrome (CS) is 2.7 births in 1,000,000 worldwide. CS caregivers begin grieving the moment they learn of their child’s diagnosis, and counseling professionals are ill prepared to counsel the bereaved in even the more typical post death situations. Therefore, this qualitative, narrative study asked the question: what …

The Lived Experiences Of Cisheteronormativity By Nonbinary Sexual Assault Survivors, Emma Jackson Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gender minorities experience higher rates of sexual assault (SA) victimization and psychological distress, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than their cisgender counterparts. Nonbinary individuals, in particular, face elevated levels of victimization, post assault distress, and unique barriers to receiving competent care both in general and specific to their assault experiences. Current research highlights the need for culturally competent care for nonbinary and transgender individuals, as well as for SA survivors. Although the experiences of SA survivors have been previously explored, specific information regarding the experiences of nonbinary survivors remains scarce. The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study, grounded in Heideggerian …

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) impacted the world at an alarming rate, including the United States, near the end of 2019. Uncertainty, fear, anxiety, and unanswered questions spread rapidly with COVID-19. The media shared the most devastating outcomes of the virus while the harsh reality of fear and unknowns seemed to stop life as people knew it and began what seemed to be a new normal with social isolation and home confinement. This quantitative correlational study examined whether fear of contracting COVID-19 was associated with coping and self-regulation of eating behaviors. Lazarus’s transactional theory of stress and coping provided the framework …
