Midwestern College Student Perceptions Of Police And The Power Of Names, Melessa Renee Henderson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Mymathlab And Nontraditional Students' Attitudes Toward Technology In Mathematics, Lisa Sherry Olsen Jan 2020

Mymathlab And Nontraditional Students' Attitudes Toward Technology In Mathematics, Lisa Sherry Olsen

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Nontraditional students, who often do not have a background in computer usage, are a growing population in higher education. These students are often ill prepared for success in mathematics courses due to attitudes toward mathematics and the use of technology in the learning process. Researchers have looked into the needs of nontraditional students in academic settings but have not focused on nontraditional students' use of adaptive learning components, such as Pearson's MyMathLab (MML), in blended classrooms. The purpose of this sequential explanatory mixed-methods study was to explore the difference in nontraditional students' attitudes toward math and the use of technology …

Predicting Recidivism Following Participation In Treatment/Intervention Programs For Ex-Offenders, Shaunae Colita Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Failure to participate in rehabilitative programs during or after prison has led to increased recidivism, which, in turn, has contributed to overcrowded prisons and lack of rehabilitation services for offenders. The purpose of this descriptive, quantitative, regression study was to explore the relationship between inmates’ program participation (i.e., during prison education program, during prison drug treatment program, during prison alcohol treatment program, and during prison sex offense treatment program) by and subsequent recidivism. Banduras' social learning theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. The study data were drawn from recidivism data of 38,624 prisoners who were released in 1994 …

Grounded in the service-profit chain theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between customer relationship management (CRM), employee retention, and service revenue. Data were analyzed for 80 leaders and managers working in Vietnam’s industrial service field. The results of the multiple regression analysis indicated the full model, containing the 2 predictor variables (CRM and employee retention), was able …

Assessing School-Based Telehealth Utilization In Medically Underserved Communities, Danielle Wesley Jan 2020

Assessing School-Based Telehealth Utilization In Medically Underserved Communities, Danielle Wesley

Medically underserved communities face challenges accessing health care services, and millions of Americans have no access to primary care. In many areas of the United States, the supply of primary care providers cannot keep up with the demand for health services. Newer healthcare delivery models are needed to address the issue. Using telehealth can augment the physician workforce shortages. The purpose of this quantitative dissertation is to examine the associations of telehealth utilization using a pediatric school-based telehealth model in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) in North Texas. Understanding The Experiences Of Young Adults Receiving Community-Based Eating Disorder Care, Hali Sitarz Jan 2020

Understanding The Experiences Of Young Adults Receiving Community-Based Eating Disorder Care, Hali Sitarz

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractIn Ontario, Canada, eating disorder care is predominately delivered through nurse practitioner-led community outreach programs; however, there is a paucity of evidence informing the role of nurses in terms of outpatient treatment, community-based care, and young adult patient experiences. With high rates of morbidity and mortality, it is imperative to establish an evidence-informed approach to eating disorder treatment and ensure that care is patient-centered. This interpretive phenomenological study explored the experiences of young adults receiving community-based treatment in Ontario. Reigel, Stromberg & Jaarsma’s Middle Range Theory of Self-Care in Chronic Illness was used as an orientating framework. Seven young adults, …

Exploring The Use Of Learner-Centered Instruction With English Language Learners In Social Studies Classrooms, Taraneh Sabouri

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractLearner-centered instructional strategies in social studies are currently ineffective in meeting the learning needs of the ELL population in an urban school in the northeastern United States. Despite English language learner (ELL) supplemental instruction on Saturdays and evenings and professional development for teachers, strategies being used to deliver curriculum have had a marginal effect on learning for ELL students, and the local school board supported the importance of exploring this problem. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore the learner-centered instructional practices used at the study site and how teachers are using Weimer’s learner-centered framework to engage …

Relationship Between Pm2.5 Levels And Cancer Incidences In Interior Alaska, Sandra G. Lewis Jan 2020

Relationship Between Pm2.5 Levels And Cancer Incidences In Interior Alaska, Sandra G. Lewis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Exposure to high levels of ambient air particulates < 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5) in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB) and the resulting impact on cancer incidence is the focus of this study. Climate, geography, and culture influence PM2.5 levels, particularly during the long cold season. While this study considers lung cancer incidences from PM2.5 exposure, the primary focus of the study is the incidences of all other types of cancers from exposure to PM2.5, because of the limited research done on this topic. This quantitative, retrospective, cohort study considered the incidences of new cancer diagnoses in the population during a 10-year period (January 1, 2008-December 31, 2017). The 2 FNSB Zip Codes, designated “hot spots,” frequently see spikes in PM2.5 during the long cold season. These areas are densely populated and contain the EPA-regulated air quality monitors. Cancer diagnoses in the hot spot Zip Codes were compared to cancer diagnoses in outlying Zip Codes (non-hot spots) that experience less PM2.5 and are more consistently within the EPA air quality guidelines. EPA monitors are not yet located in the non-hot spots. Cancer patient data were obtained from the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. The results demonstrated that a strong association was found between PM2.5 exposure and non-lung cancers (OR = 1.37; RR = 1.36; p < 0.001); and between PM2.5 exposure and lung cancer (OR = 1.87; RR = 1.88; p < 0.001). These findings may be used to promote an increased awareness among FNSB residents of the potential impact on cancer diagnoses from inhaling high levels of PM2.5, so residents may change their behavior in favor of alternatives to biomass burning to improve air quality.

Evaluating The Relationship Between Financial Inclusion, Social Inclusion And Multidimensional Poverty Reduction, Rotimi Mathew Nihinlola

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problems of high levels of poverty, financial exclusion and social exclusion are well documented in literature; a large population of poor people lack adequate access to financial services and social services including healthcare, electricity, education and water. Globally there are over 700 million people living in extreme poverty and in Ghana, over 6 million face this challenge. Progress is being recorded but there is no research that has examined the relationship between financial inclusion, social inclusion and poverty reduction in a country where multidimensional poverty is high. The purpose of this within-subject quasi-experimental correlational study is to determine the …

Effect Of The Breakthrough Student Assistance Program On Grades, Behavior, And Attendance, Regina Shoppe Jan 2019

Effect Of The Breakthrough Student Assistance Program On Grades, Behavior, And Attendance, Regina Shoppe

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

It is estimated that 9-14% of children from birth to age 5 experience social and emotional problems that may significantly affect their ability to learn later in life and students of any age may experience an array of problems resulting in difficulty learning.
