Culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) is an approach to teaching that emphasizes students’ cultural backgrounds in classroom learning to improve student success, cultural competence, and critical consciousness in culturally diverse learners. Research highlights that using CRP in multicultural classrooms supports the engagement, learning, and achievement of culturally diverse students around the world, but less is known about how K-12 teachers’ perceptions of CRP impact the usage of this practice in their classrooms. This basic qualitative study examined K-12 teachers’ perceptions of CRP in Ontario, Canada, to address this gap in practice and determine why educators are not widely using CRP in …
Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Parents’ Perspectives On School Readiness In Preschool-Age Children In Idaho, Courtney Painton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over half of Idaho’s incoming kindergarteners lack the necessary school readiness skills. The environment in which the child lives and grows, which includes the child’s parents, determines the child’s readiness for school. This study addressed Idaho parents’ roles in preparing their preschool-aged child for kindergarten, and their current ability to access resources and information on school readiness. The study was grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which provided a framework for the influence of parents on a child’s school readiness outcomes based on the idea that a person’s behavior evolves based on the relationship between the person and their environment. …

Perspectives Of Middle School Science Teachers And College Instructors Regarding Preservice Writing Pedagogy Preparation, Amanda Stewart
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The local problem explored in this study was the barriers and challenges facing middle school teachers in integrating and assessing writing in a science classroom. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the perspectives of college instructors and middle school science teachers regarding how teacher education programs provide the pedagogical skills necessary to integrate and assess writing within the classroom. Grounded in the Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge framework, research questions were designed to ask college instructors to describe how they prepare their students to integrate and assess writing as well as how the teachers described how their …
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Evaluating Nurse Medication Education, Nina Marie Carter
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inefficient communication between nurses and patients increases the risk of medication errors and jeopardizes patient safety, ultimately resulting in lower patient satisfaction as indicated by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. The purpose of this quality improvement initiative was to assess the impact of educating nurses on patient medication education using the teach-back method. Data were collected using HCAHPS survey responses from adult patients with medical conditions who had been discharged from a medical-surgical unit. The 32-item HCAHPS survey was used to capture their perceptions and experiences during their hospital stay. Data analysis entailed comparing HCAHPS …

Jamaican Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Impact Of The Tablets In School Project On Their Literacy-Teaching Practices, Valri Leonie Morgan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There have been many innovations targeting literacy teaching and learning in small countries such as Jamaica, but changes to literacy teaching practices are rarely sustained beyond the life of the initial projects. The purpose of this study was to understand teachers’ rationale for changes to literacy teaching practices that were and were not sustained beyond the life of the initial Tablets in Schools (TIS) project of 2014 in Jamaica. Grounded in Lewin’s and Rogers’s change theories, the study’s conceptual framework communicated that impactful innovation leads to sustainable change. The two research questions sought to establish how primary school teachers explained …

Vocabulary Retention And Color Effect Differences Among Developmental Community College Students, Eric Scott Coleman
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The completion of developmental community college (DCC) courses is a crucial step in community college education to reach the national goal of increasing college success. DCC students are a unique population who require specific strategies such as vocabulary retention (VR) to achieve academic success. Prior research on vocabulary has been limited to VR and color effects. However, there is a lack of research on the intersection of these two variables (VR and color effects). This quantitative research study used the theoretical lens feature integration theory (FIT) to examine the effects that text color has on VR among DCC students. Additionally, …

Exploring Social Work Leadership Skills At The Veterans Health Administration: A Transformational Leadership Perspective, Jose Arturo Camacho
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
One of the problems in the field of social work leadership is the lack of a theoretical framework to guide its practice. Bass' transformational leadership theory (TFL) offers a framework for the field of social work leadership. However, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), the largest employer of social workers in the United States, has not examined TFL skills with its social work leaders nor its effect on employee job satisfaction. This quantitative, cross-sectional, web-based study was designed to bridge the gap between social work leadership practice and leadership theory. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) survey was administered to 26 VHA …
