Indoor Environmental Quality Within An Elementary School Classroom: Measurements Of Felis Domesticus I, Dermatophagoides Pteronyssinus I, Dermatophagoides Farinae I, And Blatella Germanica In Carpeting, Jennifer Fowler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The United States Environmental Protection Agency acknowledges that indoor environments can impact the health of students and can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance (USEPA 2008). In a school year, children are required by the Florida Department of Education to be in school for a total of 180 days, which is 795 hours spent in a classroom (FLDOE 2008). In the elementary school setting, kindergarten classes typically spend a portion of the school day with floor-based activities. The American Lung Association (ALA) states that over 6.8 million children under the age of 18 are affected by asthma (ALA 2008). Allergic …

Assessing The Performance Of Water Bodies In Hillsborough County, Florida Using Data Envelopment Analysis (Dea), Geoffrey George Fouad
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to describe the relationship between surface water quality and land use. Water management recommendations will be divulged based upon the interaction of lake water quality and land use. The methodology developed for this research applied Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), a performance measurement tool, to evaluate lake water quality in relation to surrounding land use. Lake performance ratings were generated by DEA software that assessed multiple variables describing surface water nutrient loads and surrounding land use. Results from this analysis revealed a significant trend between lake water quality and land use within the study area. …
Bite Force In Two Top Predators, The Great Barracuda, Sphyraena Barracuda And Bull Shark Carcharhinus Leucas, During Ontogeny, María Laura Habegger
Bite Force In Two Top Predators, The Great Barracuda, Sphyraena Barracuda And Bull Shark Carcharhinus Leucas, During Ontogeny, María Laura Habegger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Functional morphologists have extensively used measurements of performance to investigate the relationship among form, function and ecology through ontogeny. Among different measurements of performance bite force play a crucial role influencing fitness. Although, bite force has been thoroughly investigated among vertebrates, the majority of the studies on fishes have been concentrated only in small species. Consequently, this is the first study that compares the bite force performance in two large marine predators, the great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) and bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas). Values of posterior bite force in S. barracuda varied from 3 - 258 N …
Theology, Spirituality, And The Academic Study Of Religion In Public Universities, Don Saunders
Theology, Spirituality, And The Academic Study Of Religion In Public Universities, Don Saunders
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines whether the secular institutions of American higher education should address students questions of meaning, purpose, wisdom, and human destiny. That is, it investigates the place of the normative analysis of religious experience and behavior within the public university. I use the work of Ninian Smart, Russell T. McCutcheon and Ivan Strenski to illustrate the case against the inclusion of theology and spirituality in the academic study of religion. In their view, theology is at best an artifact, like ritual or religious art and not an academic discipline. Conversely, I use the work of Paul Tillich, John Dunne, …
Use Of Molecular Tools On Surveys Of Genetic Variation And Population Structure In Three Species Of Sharks, Andrey Leonardo F Castro
Use Of Molecular Tools On Surveys Of Genetic Variation And Population Structure In Three Species Of Sharks, Andrey Leonardo F Castro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Molecular tools, such as sequencing of the mitochondrial DNA Control Region (CR) and genotyping of highly variable nuclear microsatellites were applied to survey the genetic diversity, population structure and phylogeography of three shark species: the whale shark, Rhincodon typus; the bull shark, Carcharhinus leucas; and the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum. The highly migratory and pelagic whale shark exhibited the largest length variation yet reported for an elasmobranch CR (1143–1332 bp), and high haplotype (h = 0.974 ± 0.008) and nucleotide diversities(π = 0.011 ± 0.006). No geographical clustering of lineages was observed and the most common …
Germania-Based Sol-Gel Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coatings For Capillary Microextraction, Li Fang
Germania-Based Sol-Gel Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coatings For Capillary Microextraction, Li Fang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For the first time, germania-based hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel materials were developed for analytical sample preparation and chromatographic separation. Being an isostructural analog of silica (SiO2), germania (GeO2) is compatible with silica network. This structural similarity, which is reflected by the relative positions of germanium and silicon in the periodic table, stimulated our investigation on the development of germania-based sol-gel hybrid organic-inorganic coatings for analytical applications.
Sol-gel sorbents and stationary phases reported to date are predominantly silica-based. Poor pH stability of silica-based materials is a major drawback. In this work, this problem was addressed through development of …

Nutrient Distribution Effects From Freshwater Discharge At Franklin Lock And Dam (S-79) In 2005 And 2006 On The Caloosahatchee Estuary And San Carlos Bay, Fort Myers, Florida, Kristan M. Uhlenbrock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nutrient distribution correlates with discharge of freshwater from Franklin Lock and Dam structure (S-79) by delivery into the Caloosahatchee Estuary (CE) and out of this area, including the surrounding San Carlos Bay (SCB) and adjacent West Florida Shelf. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution of nutrients along the CE waterway and illustrates the effects high freshwater discharge from S-79 has on the coastal and offshore environments, providing a potential source of nutrient input. This study consisted of a 7-station transect monitored biweekly from April 2005 thru August 2006 for nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, and salinity, along …
Asynchronous Cellular Automata - Special Networks Local Slowdown Produces Global Speedup, Arash Khani Ardestani
Asynchronous Cellular Automata - Special Networks Local Slowdown Produces Global Speedup, Arash Khani Ardestani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Information processing in living tissues is dramatically different from what we see in common man-made computer. The data and processing is distributed into the activity of cells which communicate only with neighboring cells. There is no clock for the global synchronization of cellular activities. There is not even one bit of central memory for globally shared data. The communication network between cells is highly irregular and may change without changing the outcome of the computation. A simple network of automata is introduced and analyzed to represent a mathematical model of special group of cells in an imaginary tissue sample. The …
N-Acyltyramines As Substrates For Tyrosinase: Enzymatic Lag And Dopamine Precursor, Jacob A. Shafer
N-Acyltyramines As Substrates For Tyrosinase: Enzymatic Lag And Dopamine Precursor, Jacob A. Shafer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Tyrosinase is a widespread, highly studied and important enzyme involved in processes ranging from the browning of mushrooms to roles in mammalian cancer. The enzyme suffers from a noticeable lag phase while the enzyme generates all necessary cofactors from available substrates. There have not been significant studies of the effect on lag from moving through a family of substituted substrates. This thesis reports the results of one such study using a family of N-acyltyramines.
The selection of N-acyltyramines was ideal because the substrates in this reaction may be related to synthesis of N-acyldopamines, which serve many important …
Reducing Sediment And Bacterial Contamination In Water Using Mucilage Extracted From The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Cactus, Audrey Lynn Buttice
Reducing Sediment And Bacterial Contamination In Water Using Mucilage Extracted From The Opuntia Ficus-Indica Cactus, Audrey Lynn Buttice
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the past decade an increased amount of attention has been drawn to the water contamination problems that affect the world. As a result, a variety of purification methods targeted at communities in developing countries have surfaced and, although all have contributed to the effort of improving water quality, few have been accepted and sustained for long term usage. Case studies indicate that the most beneficial methods are those which use indigenous resources, as they are both abundant and readily accepted by the communities. In an attempt to make a contribution to the search for water purification methods that can …
Characterization Of Conductive Polycarbonate Films, Selma Hokenek
Characterization Of Conductive Polycarbonate Films, Selma Hokenek
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Transparency and conductivity are highly desirable qualities in materials for modern gas sensors. Polymer gas sensors have been developed in which the polymer acts as a solid electrolyte. However, these types of sensors are opaque, which limits their potential for integration with dichromatic materials. The development of a sensor integrating conductive polymer films and dichromatic materials requires the implementation of a transparent conductive polymer film. The potential of iodine-doped bisphenol-a polycarbonate films containing bis(ethylenedioxy)-tetrathiafulvalene (BEDO-TTF) dye for sensor applications will be tested through characterization of the films at various stages of their fabrication using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Transmission Electron …
Two Methodologies In Pursuit Of The Elucidation Of Copper (Ii)—Centered Bioinorganic Chemistry, William John Wagner
Two Methodologies In Pursuit Of The Elucidation Of Copper (Ii)—Centered Bioinorganic Chemistry, William John Wagner
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Copper is a widely distributed transition metal in the earth's crust and has been adopted in a variety of biological systems. In many ways the biochemical usefulness of copper stems from its positive redox potential. This positive redox potential allows copper to assist in the movement of electrons. Copper ions can be found in natural systems as either CuI, CuII or CuIII in part due to this redox potential. While CuII -centered biochemistry has been studied for years, mechanistic details in certain CuII -centered redox reactions remain unresolved. This study presents two methodologies for …
Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels
Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I evaluate the ways in which newspaper articles constructed the gendered cultural and personal narratives of a woman Presidential and a woman Vice-Presidential candidate during the 2008 Presidential Election season. Drawing upon West and Zimmerman's "Doing Gender" (1987) that explains gender is performed constantly throughout life, I assess the stories told about each candidate and the way she performed gender. There are two different types of stories created. The first is a personal narrative which tells the story of each individual candidate, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. The second is a cultural narrative which tells the story of a dis-embodied …
Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams
Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
During the last deglaciation, Greenland ice core records exhibit multiple, high frequency climate events including the Oldest Dryas, Bølling-Allerød and Younger Dryas, which may be linked to meltwater routing of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Previous studies show episodic meltwater input, via the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) several thousand years before the onset of the Younger Dryas until ~13.0 kcal (thousand calendar) yrs, when meltwater may have switched to an eastern spillway, reducing thermohaline circulation (THC). Data from laminated Orca Basin in the GOM, constrained by 34 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) 14C dates, provide the …
The Quasi-Uniformity Condition And Three-Dimensional Geometry Representation As It Applies To The Reproducing Kernel Element Method, Nathaniel O. Collier
The Quasi-Uniformity Condition And Three-Dimensional Geometry Representation As It Applies To The Reproducing Kernel Element Method, Nathaniel O. Collier
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Reproducing Kernel Element Method (RKEM) is a hybrid between finite elements and meshfree methods that provides shape functions of arbitrary order and continuity yet retains the Kronecker-delta property. To achieve these properties, the underlying mesh must meet certain regularity constraints, unique to RKEM. The aim of this dissertation is to develop a precise definition of these constraints, and a general algorithm for assessing a mesh is developed. This check is a critical step in the use of RKEM in any application.
The general checking algorithm is made more specific to apply to two-dimensional triangular meshes with circular supports and …
Cooper-Hewitt Museum Of Design And Technology (C-Hmd+T): Biomimetic Architecture As Part Of Nature, Isabel Marisa Corsino Carro
Cooper-Hewitt Museum Of Design And Technology (C-Hmd+T): Biomimetic Architecture As Part Of Nature, Isabel Marisa Corsino Carro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
If architects are to create a sustainable world, one in which we are accountable to the needs of all future generations and living creatures, we must recognize that our present form of designing buildings is deeply flawed. Being the number one cause of emission gases, building design needs to be revolutionized to be able to surpass such climatic changes and finally harmonize with nature. To create a sustainable future and solve the global warming crisis, architects need to incorporate nature within design through the process known as biomimicry. Janine Benyus, the author of Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, stressed how …
Moment-Dependent Pseudo-Rigid-Body Models For Beam Deflection And Stiffness Kinematics And Elasticity, Diego Alejandro Espinosa
Moment-Dependent Pseudo-Rigid-Body Models For Beam Deflection And Stiffness Kinematics And Elasticity, Diego Alejandro Espinosa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis introduces a novel parametric beam model for describing the kinematics and elastic properties of ortho-planar compliant Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) with straight beams subject to specific buckling loads. Ortho-planar MEMS have the ability to achieve motion out the plane on which they were fabricated, characteristic that can be used to integrate optical devices such as variable optical attenuators and micro-mirrors. In addition, ortho-planar MEMS with large output forces and long strokes could be used to develop new applications such as tactile displays, active Braille, and actuation of micro-mirrors. In order to analyze the kinematics and elasticity of a curved …
Effects Of Diluent Addition And Metal Support Interactions In Heterogeneous Catalysis: Sic/Vpo Catalysts For Maleic Anhydride Production And Co/Silica Supported Catalysts For Fts, Ala'a Hamed Kababji
Effects Of Diluent Addition And Metal Support Interactions In Heterogeneous Catalysis: Sic/Vpo Catalysts For Maleic Anhydride Production And Co/Silica Supported Catalysts For Fts, Ala'a Hamed Kababji
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work begins with an introduction to catalysis focusing on heterogeneous systems and surface science phenomena. A study on the partial oxidation reaction of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA) is presented in the first part. MA supplies are barely adequate for market requirements due to continued strong demand. Only slight improvement in catalytic performance would be welcome in the industrial community. The vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst was used in this work. The reaction is highly exothermic and the need to properly support the catalyst, not only for good dispersion but adequate heat dissipation is of crucial importance. For this, …

Shell Abnormalities In Archaias Angulatus (Foraminifera) From The Florida Keys: An Indication Of Increasing Environmental Stress?, Heidi Lynne Souder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Historically, Archaias angulatus has been a major contributor to foraminiferal assemblages and sediments in coral-reef environments throughout the Caribbean and tropical Atlantic. A variety of anomalous features were observed in the tests of A. angulatus individuals collected live from the Florida reef tract in 2004 and 2005. Six types of anomalies were documented using scanning electron microscopy: microborings, microbial biofilm, pitted surfaces, dissolution, calcification abnormalities, and growth abnormalities. Calcification abnormalities included mineralogical projections, lacy crusts, and repair marks. These abnormalities were found among both juvenile and adult A. angulatus, and similar features were also found among Cyclorbiculina compressa and …
The Participation Of Ngos In Healthcare: The Case Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment In Argentina, Cecilia Vindrola Padros
The Participation Of Ngos In Healthcare: The Case Of Pediatric Cancer Treatment In Argentina, Cecilia Vindrola Padros
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The deterioration of the Argentine public health system has lead to an increase in non-governmental involvement in the provision of health services. The emerging relationship between these sectors is filled with tensions, contradictions, and negotiations, reflecting the historical trajectory of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the transformations of the public health system. These problems are specifically evident in programs that focus on pediatric oncology treatment due to the fact that ideas about childhood, chronic disease, and mortality construct an unusual collaborative framework between governmental and non-governmental healthcare professionals. Pediatric cancer contradicts traditional notions of childhood; it points out the ambivalences associated …

Intradermal Delivery Of Plasmids Encoding Angiogenic Growth Factors By Electroporation Promotes Wound Healing And Neovascularization, Bernadette Ferraro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gene therapy techniques delivering exogenous angiogenic growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2), are currently being investigated as potential treatments for ischemia resulting from a variety of conditions, such as peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic wounds. Despite these intense efforts, a viable clinical option to promote therapeutic neovascularization remains elusive. Electroporation is a simple in vivo method to deliver normally impermeable molecules, such as plasmid DNA, to a variety of tissues including skin and muscle. This study investigated intradermal injection of plasmids encoding angiogenic growth factors with electroporation as a novel …

Photoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Bioconjugated Quantum Dots And Their Application For Early Cancer Detection, Ganna Chornokur
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most of the bio-applications of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) show and utilize their superior optical properties over organic fluorophores. An estimated 3-35% of all cancer deaths could be avoided through early detection, therefore, there is a critical need to develop sensitive probes.
The objectives of this work are:
Research the phenomena of "blue" photoluminescence (PL) spectral shift on the dried bioconjugated QDs and develop the relevant mechanism;
Develop a methodology that will allow successful confirmation of the bioconjugation reaction between biomolecules and QDs;
Propose a modification of an existent method or approach to employ the "blue" spectral shift of bioconjugated …
Child Psychopathology, Parental Problem Perception, And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Jessica Curley Hankinson
Child Psychopathology, Parental Problem Perception, And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Jessica Curley Hankinson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Service underutilization is a major problem facing children with emotional and behavioral problems. In addition, parents are often the ones most responsible for seeking help for their children. However, many children do not receive adequate help because parents do not perceive a problem or do not recognize that a child is in need. The present study examined parental thresholds for problem perception and subsequent help-seeking decisions based on children's behaviors presented in a vignette. It was hypothesized that the type of child behavior, child and parent gender, and other parental characteristics would be associated with different thresholds for problem perception …
Effect Of Permeate Suction On The Performance Of Spiral Wound Nanofiltration Module, Awad Abdel Monem El-Shamy
Effect Of Permeate Suction On The Performance Of Spiral Wound Nanofiltration Module, Awad Abdel Monem El-Shamy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fouling in a nanofitration membrane module is usually a result of concentration polarization. The effect of permeate suction on the slightly negatively charged spiral wound nanofiltration membrane is investigated. According to the film theory, the mass transfer coefficient is inversely proportional to concentration polarization. The effect of permeate suction destabilizes the boundary layer. This will decrease the concentration polarization layer, and consequently will increase mass transfer through the membrane's surface.
To validate the hypothesis, experiments were carried out on a NF membrane that can be described by the solution-diffusion model. This model has coefficients that can be measured experimentally. Using …
Terror Management And Self-Enhancement: The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem And Need For Closure, Nathan A. Heflick
Terror Management And Self-Enhancement: The Moderating Role Of Self-Esteem And Need For Closure, Nathan A. Heflick
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Terror management theory posits that self-esteem ultimately protects people from death anxiety. Much research has demonstrated that individuals reminded of death tend to self-enhance. However, more recent research suggests that need for closure and self-esteem might moderate these findings, but no research has directly tested this. It was hypothesized that for people high in self-esteem, mortality salience will not affect self-enhancement. However, for individuals low in self-esteem, it will either increase enhancement (if low in closure) or increase verification (if high in closure). These hypotheses were fully supported using Christian's perceptions of God's love as the dependent variable. Implications for …
Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino
Transformational Processes And Learner Outcomes For Online Learning: An Activity Theory Case Study Of Spanish Students, Joseph M. Terantino
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the actions of online language learners from an activity theoretical perspective. It also attempted to explain how the students' learning outcomes evolved from their online learning experiences. This explanation placed an emphasis on the learners' previous experiences, defining their activity systems, the use of mediational tools, and the resolution of contradictions. Within this activity theoretical case study a background survey, four interviews, and three field observations were conducted with seven foreign language students of an online Spanish course. The students' on-screen actions were recorded and subsequently documented in a video episode …
The Impact Of Situational Context On Children's Social Information Processing: The Proximal Influence Of Friends, Heather L. Smith-Schrant
The Impact Of Situational Context On Children's Social Information Processing: The Proximal Influence Of Friends, Heather L. Smith-Schrant
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is increasing recognition that contextual aspects of social situations are important determinants of children's social information processing. While it is generally accepted that friends influence children's social behavior, the immediate influence of a friend in specific conflict situations is less understood. Contextualized vignettes depicting hypothetical peer conflict situations were developed to examine the impact of situational context, namely a friend's suggested attribution and an antagonist action cue, on students' social information processing. A repeated measures design examined the proximal influence of situational context on 4th and 5th grade students' (N=367) own intent attributions, emotional reactions, and response …
Influence Of Temporary Inactivation Of The Prefrontal Cortex Or Hippocampus During Stress On The Subsequent Expression Of Anxiety And Memory, Joshua D. Halonen
Influence Of Temporary Inactivation Of The Prefrontal Cortex Or Hippocampus During Stress On The Subsequent Expression Of Anxiety And Memory, Joshua D. Halonen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The neural pathways underlying the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have not been fully elucidated. Intrusive memories, persistent anxiety and other cognitive deficits have been attributed to maladaptive or otherwise aberrant processing in specific brain regions, including the hippocampus, amygdala and prefrontal cortex. Our laboratory has developed an animal model of PTSD which results in the enhancement of memory for a place associated with exposure to a predator, anxiety-like behavior, increased startle and impaired memory in a non-aversive memory task. To better understand how the interaction of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex contribute to the different symptoms of …
Gender Trouble In Northern Ireland: An Examination Of Gender And Bodies Within The 1970s And 1980s Provisional Irish Republican Army In Northern Ireland, Jennifer Earles
Gender Trouble In Northern Ireland: An Examination Of Gender And Bodies Within The 1970s And 1980s Provisional Irish Republican Army In Northern Ireland, Jennifer Earles
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
With this thesis, I will utilize both feminist and queer theory to highlight the gendered and bodily tactics used by the women of the 1970s/1980s Provisional Irish Republican Army. I will explore how women can both manipulate gender and use their bodies as a response to gender, ethnic, class, and colonial power relations and conflict discourses, the limitations of these approaches, and how these actions can work to reconfigure political movements, local cultures, and create a space for social change and a future beyond conflict which includes women. My methods will include a feminist content analysis of interviews, written records, …
The Role Of Neuroinflammation In Regulating The Age-Related Decline In Neurogenesis, Adam D. Bachstetter
The Role Of Neuroinflammation In Regulating The Age-Related Decline In Neurogenesis, Adam D. Bachstetter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adult neurogenesis, is a lifelong process by which relatively few cells are added into two restricted regions of the brain. Integration of the cells into the existing neuronal circulatory, with the unique properties involved in the maturation of these cells, is possibly critical to the acquisition and retrieval of new memories. With the chronological aging of the organism a process of cellular senescence occurs throughout the body; a portion of which is independent of primary alterations to the stem cells; instead, it appears to be dependent on the environment where the cells reside, and is in part regulated by inflammation. …
