Literacy And Behavior In Early Childhood: Exploring The Factors That Impact Achievement, Melissa Farino Todd
Literacy And Behavior In Early Childhood: Exploring The Factors That Impact Achievement, Melissa Farino Todd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Academic achievement has been the focal point in education for decades. In 2001, an Act of Congress was proposed to improve individual outcomes in education through evidenced based research using measurable goals, higher standards, and accountability. This federal legislation, known as the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, mandates that all teachers be highly qualified by 2006 and that all students become proficient by the 2013/14 school year, specifically in the area of literacy. Consequently, kindergarten readiness has become an area of concern, thus placing preschool teachers under pressure to prepare children for school. The purpose of this study …
Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer
Visionary Of Control: The Efficiency, Expertise, And Exclusion Of Alexander James Inglis, Heidi Tilney Kramer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alexander James Inglis was the key contributor to changes enacted in education during the Progressive era. He instituted an administrative and curricular hierarchy in order to create social organization during a chaotic time in American history, thus advancing professionalism in teaching and systematizing a future workforce - teaching previously had no standards, and throngs of immigrants overwhelmed the school system. While necessary at the time, this system of centralization, homogenization, and sorting continues to result in exclusion in secondary education and middle schools. Categorization is Inglis' hallmark in his work in education, following Frederick W. Taylor's managerial practices, and he …
Identifying And Addressing Health Disparities In Black Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Chivon A. Mingo
Identifying And Addressing Health Disparities In Black Older Adults With Osteoarthritis, Chivon A. Mingo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis in older adults, often results in pain, disability and poor psychological well-being. Compared to White adults, Black adults consistently report more pain, more activity limitations, and have different perceptions about OA. Racial disparities also exist in treatments, and prevalence of arthritis. It is imperative to have effective interventions and treatment options for older Blacks. Yet, few arthritis interventions have included Black participants in their samples, and nearly all of those have failed to report separate analyses indicating the effectiveness for Black adults, thus leaving a gap in the literature. The purpose of …
The Positive- And Negative-Right Conceptions Of Freedom Of Speech And The Specter Of Reimposing The Broadcast Fairness Doctrine ... Or Something Like It, Adam Fowler
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A key theoretical debate underlying the now defunct Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation known as the Fairness Doctrine is conflict over what constitutes the right to freedom of speech: a positive or negative conception. Similarly, since repeal of the Doctrine, other FCC measures to uphold the “public-interest” standard in broadcasting have relied on a positive conception of speech. This thesis demonstrates the history of this debate through court cases, news reports, scholarly articles and historical documents. It then is argued that the positive-right nature of these regulations is problematic philosophically, constitutionally and practically. The positive-right conception lends itself to an …
Trials And Verdicts: Narratives Of Recollection In The Good Soldier And Lolita, Constance Elizabeth Holmes
Trials And Verdicts: Narratives Of Recollection In The Good Soldier And Lolita, Constance Elizabeth Holmes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will apply the structure of a legal trial’s procedures to two Modernist novels: Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier (1915) and Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita (1955). These novels position themselves as renderings of legal proceedings, the written memoriam of metaphorical trials conducted by first person narrators who alternatively and simultaneously function as Plaintiff’s counsel, Defense Counsel and finally as witnesses to the events of the story. All of these personae reveal evidence and testimony presented in the forum of a trial of the central characters who recollect legal events and whose narrations develop moral questions. Thus these narrations are …
Upper Elementary Boys’ Participation During Group Singing Activities In Single-Sex And Coeducational Classes, Zadda M. Bazzy
Upper Elementary Boys’ Participation During Group Singing Activities In Single-Sex And Coeducational Classes, Zadda M. Bazzy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As boys in the upper elementary grades become increasingly influenced by peer pressure, many are less likely to participate in singing activities because singing is considered a "feminine" activity. The purpose of this research was to explore if there was an effect on upper elementary boys' level of participation during group singing activities when they attended music classes in a single-sex setting.
This study employed a true experimental design and a mixed method. Boys (N = 186) were videotaped during their regular coeducational music classes on two occasions to establish baseline data. Then the students were randomly assigned to …
Influence Of Misperceptions About Gay Affluence On Support For Pro-Gay Legal Reform, Vanessa E. Hettinger
Influence Of Misperceptions About Gay Affluence On Support For Pro-Gay Legal Reform, Vanessa E. Hettinger
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The deleterious impact of negative stereotypes toward gays has been established, but less thoroughly examined are the potentially harmful effects that positive stereotypes may carry. Gay Americans lack multiple legal rights enjoyed by heterosexual citizens, yet many people do not see gays as a genuinely disadvantaged group. One possible reason for this is the popular misconception that gays are wealthier than the average American. Drawing on previous research regarding popular support for underdogs, it was predicted that, to the extent people endorsed the conception of gay affluence, they would be less likely to support legal reform benefiting gays. This hypothesis …
The Relationship Between Life Satisfaction And Substance Use In Adolescence, Leeza Rooks
The Relationship Between Life Satisfaction And Substance Use In Adolescence, Leeza Rooks
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Low life satisfaction and substance use in adolescence are causes for concern as each problem is known to be associated with many concurrent and later negative outcomes. To date, only four studies have examined links between these variables in youth. This study added to the literature by examining adolescents' life satisfaction in relation to their frequency of use of a variety of substance types, using an understudied population (i.e., a predominantly Hispanic sample of 130 high school students). Results included significant, inverse bivariate links between adolescent life satisfaction and use of alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. When examined simultaneously, adolescents' use …
Victimization Among Individuals With Low Self-Control: Effects On Fear Versus Perceived Risk Of Crime, Casey Williams
Victimization Among Individuals With Low Self-Control: Effects On Fear Versus Perceived Risk Of Crime, Casey Williams
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fear of crime is an issue that has long been a part of mainstream society through politics and media. However, research on the specific mechanisms of fear and the effects on behavior is sparse. After considering the victim-offender overlap consistently found within the literature, the present study was based on the theory posed within Schreck, Stewart, and Fisher (2006) in which those who are low in self-control may have altered perceptions of fear or risk of crime that might increase the likelihood that the individual will be in risky locations conducive to victimization. The current study also included a novel …

In addition, the effects of ABC counseling on the school-related variables such as discipline, attendance, and academics, as well as possible outcome differences caused by demographic …
Human Factors Consideration In Developing A New Drive-By-Wire Interface, Sravan Kumar Elineni
Human Factors Consideration In Developing A New Drive-By-Wire Interface, Sravan Kumar Elineni
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The current study examined specific aspects of human factors involved in driving a vehicle with a modified Drive-by-Wire (DBW) control system. A DBW system is an electro-mechanical system which controls the primary operations of a vehicle such as steering, acceleration, and braking using a controller such as a joystick. Designing a human interface system for a DBW system involves three main phases in the human factors design process namely user centric/ergonomic design conception, building a prototype and validating the prototype based on human factor considerations. The main objective and focus of this research is to conceptualize a more ergonomic DBW …
School-Based Mental Health Services: A National Survey Of School Psychologists’ Practices And Perceptions, Allison Friedrich
School-Based Mental Health Services: A National Survey Of School Psychologists’ Practices And Perceptions, Allison Friedrich
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the current role of school psychologists in the provision of school-based mental health services, including factors that relate to their provision of such services, by surveying a national sample of practicing school psychologists. Despite an extensive knowledge base regarding which professional services school psychologists provide in general, few studies have focused exclusively on specific modalities of mental health services. Previous lines of research also have not fully identified why school psychologists do not spend as much of their professional time in the provision of mental health services as they would desire. Therefore, a central purpose of this …
The Novel Use Of Recombinant Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor (Gm-Csf) To Reverse Cerebral Amyloidosis And Cognitive Impairment In Alzheimer’S Disease Mouse Models: Insights From The Investigation Of Rheumatoid Arthritis As A Negative Risk Factor For Alzheimer’S Disease, Timothy David Boyd
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For many years, it has been known that Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a negative risk factor for the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It has been commonly assumed that RA patients’ usage of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have helped prevent the onset and progression of AD pathogenesis. Furthermore, experiments in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease have looked to inhibit inflammation, and have demonstrated some efficacy against AD-like pathology in these models. Thus many NSAID clinical trials have been performed over the years, but all have proven unsuccessful in AD patients. This suggests that intrinsic factors within RA pathogenesis itself may …

Microexpression Spotting In Video Using Optical Strain, Sridhar Godavarthy
Microexpression Spotting In Video Using Optical Strain, Sridhar Godavarthy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Microexpression detection plays a vital role in applications such as lie detection and psychological consultations. Current research is progressing in the direction of automating microexpression recognition by aiming at classifying the microexpressions in terms of FACS Action Units. Although high detection rates are being achieved, the datasets used for evaluation of these systems are highly restricted. They are limited in size - usually still pictures or extremely short videos; motion constrained; containing only a single microexpression and do not contain negative cases where microexpressions are absent. Only a few of these systems run in real time and even fewer have …

Teaching Social Skills To Children With Asperger’S And High Functioning Autism: An Evaluation Of Video Self-Modeling And Behavior Skills Training, Krystal M. Mcfee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of video self-modeling and behavior skills training to teach social skills to children with Asperger’s and high functioning autism. The targeted social skills were social initiations and social responses. The video self-modeling alone condition was implemented first using a video feedforward approach. A behavior skills training (BST) procedure was implemented following the video self-modeling alone condition for each participant. BST consisted of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. The frequency of each target behavior was scored from videotapes using 10-second frequency within interval recording. After the video self-modeling was introduced, a …

The purpose of this study is to add to the knowledge of reading development by investigating reading processes from a neurocognitive and educational perspective. This study seeks to provide some insight about reading development for the neuroscience field. The goals of this study are to attain a clearer picture of reading development by using both behavioral assessments and event-related potentials (ERPs), and to begin to bridge the gap between both fields of study. Children between the ages of 7 and 13 were placed in one of two groups depending on their reading comprehension levels for the first analyses, and reading …
Malaria In Prehistoric Sardinia (Italy): An Examination Of Skeletal Remains From The Middle Bronze Age, Teddi J. Setzer
Malaria In Prehistoric Sardinia (Italy): An Examination Of Skeletal Remains From The Middle Bronze Age, Teddi J. Setzer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sardinia was an island with a history of a malarious environment until eradication efforts were conducted from 1946 to 1950. While historic documents suggest the disease was introduced from North Africa around 500 BC, no study has been conducted to test for the presence of malaria in prehistoric native populations, such as the Nuragic people of the Bronze Age. However, it has been suggested that aspects of the Nuragic culture, for example the stone structures found throughout the island, are adaptations to a malarious environment. The purpose of this dissertation is to test the hypothesis that malaria was present in …
Female Agency In Restoration And Nineteenth-Century Drama, Haley D. Anderson
Female Agency In Restoration And Nineteenth-Century Drama, Haley D. Anderson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines issues of female agency in the plays The Rover and The Widow Ranter by Aphra Behn, Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw, and Votes for Women! by Elizabeth Robins. The heroines of each of these plays work toward gaining agency for themselves, and in order to achieve this goal, they often stray from cultural norms of femininity and encroach on the masculine world. This thesis postulates that agency for women becomes a fluid notion, not statically defined. These plays show a fluctuating and evolving sense of feminine agency.
An Ecology Of Performance: Gregory Bateson's Cybernetic Performance, Daniel Matthew Blaeuer
An Ecology Of Performance: Gregory Bateson's Cybernetic Performance, Daniel Matthew Blaeuer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a case study of the public performances of Gregory Bateson at The Esalen Institute. The case study is a reconsideration of the work of Gregory Bateson from the perspective of performance studies. The author brings together performativity, cybernetics, and the sacred to argue that Gregory Bateson, in his public performances, was striving for grace in encounters with others. The author has conducted archival research into Bateson’s presentations and has spoken with several close to Bateson to get a sense of how his process of public presentation paralleled his ideas—a process of continually working through ideas in conversation …
Bastards, Brains, Boobs And Performance: A Retrospective Account, Joanna Bartell
Bastards, Brains, Boobs And Performance: A Retrospective Account, Joanna Bartell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The two essays that comprise this thesis use personal narrative to discuss various aspects of illness, resistance and the body. The first essay uses performance theory to explore the social structures, mandates and restrictions concerning illness. I use the cancer experience to explore the co-creation of self, identity, and modes of being between "performer" and "audience." "Performer," in this case, is the "breast cancer patient," and the "audience" is comprised of the "social others.” The second essay explores cyborgization of the body, its painful effects, and associated social and moral values. It also discusses how we create theory and understanding …
The Aggregated Influences Of Poverty Impacting Dental Care Access And Oral Health Among Migrant Farmworkers In Tampa, Florida, Nolan Kline
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Oral health is an important aspect of overall health, but many vulnerable populations such as migrant farmworkers are without access to oral healthcare. Although some non-government organizations such as faith-based organizations have attempted to fill gaps left by government and private sectors, a lack of a dental safety net creates limited access to oral health services for migrant farmworkers. Access to care is further constrained by structural factors including low wages, migration route, and high costs of care. Building off a critical medical anthropology approach in understanding oral healthcare access, I argue that limited oral health access for migrant workers …
An Integrated Building Water Management Model For Green Building, Caryssa Joustra
An Integrated Building Water Management Model For Green Building, Caryssa Joustra
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the developer of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) green building scoring system. On first inspection of LEED points, few address water efficiency. However, water management encompasses other points beyond the Water Efficiency (WE) category. In general, the industry is apt to take a somewhat compartmentalized approach to water management. The use of alternative water sources or the reuse of wastewater significantly complicates the water budget picture. A total water management systems approach, taking into consideration water from various sources, both inside and outside the building, should be implemented in order …
Tracking Chemistry Self-Efficacy And Achievement In A Preparatory Chemistry Course, Carmen Alicia Garcia
Tracking Chemistry Self-Efficacy And Achievement In A Preparatory Chemistry Course, Carmen Alicia Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Self-efficacy is a person's own perception about performing a task with a certain level of proficiency (Bandura, 1986). An important affective aspect of learning chemistry is chemistry self-efficacy (CSE). Several researchers have found chemistry self-efficacy to be a fair predictor of achievement in chemistry. This study was done in a college preparatory chemistry class for science majors exploring chemistry self-efficacy and its change as it relates to achievement. A subscale of CAEQ, Chemistry Attitudes and Experiences Questionnaire (developed by Dalgety et al, 2003) as well as student interviews were used to determine student chemistry self-efficacy as it changed during the …
Moderating The Effectiveness Of Messages To Promote Physical Activity In Type 2 Diabetes, Rachel E. Myers
Moderating The Effectiveness Of Messages To Promote Physical Activity In Type 2 Diabetes, Rachel E. Myers
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The world is experiencing a rapid rise in chronic health problems, which places an enormous burden on health care services. Modifiable health behaviors such as physical inactivity are largely responsible for this high prevalence and incidence of chronic diseases. Message tailoring is a well-established approach for constructing health communication and has been shown to increase the persuasiveness of messages in the promotion of healthy behaviors. Message framing is an effective strategy that has been well-studied in psychology over the past 20-plus years across a breadth of health-related behaviors but has received little attention in the nursing research literature. Based on …
You Can’T Always Get What You Want, But Does It Matter? The Relationship Between Prechild Preferences And Post-Child Actual Labor Division Fit And Well-Being, Kristen M. Shockley
You Can’T Always Get What You Want, But Does It Matter? The Relationship Between Prechild Preferences And Post-Child Actual Labor Division Fit And Well-Being, Kristen M. Shockley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Significant shifts in social ideology and legislation have brought about considerable changes in work and family dynamics in the Western world, and the male as breadwinner-wife as homemaker model is no longer the norm. However, despite increasingly gender egalitarian ideals, the division of labor among dual-earner couples tends to adopt a "neo traditional" once children are born, where women devote more time to family labor and men spend more time in paid employment
Although asymmetrical divisions of labor have clear workplace and societal consequences in terms of women's earnings, organizational advancement, and inequality, the effects on individual well-being are not …
Beyond Survival: An Exploration Of Narrative Healing And Forgiveness In Healing From Rape, Heather Curry
Beyond Survival: An Exploration Of Narrative Healing And Forgiveness In Healing From Rape, Heather Curry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work explores: liberatory possibilities and limitations of narrative in healing from rape; the work and meanings of forgiveness, specifically seeking a complex definition of forgiveness drawing on spiritual, feminist, complexity, and phenomenological philosophies; and the relationships between narrative processes and forgiveness. I use an autoethnographic approach, offering my story of rape and healing in the aftermath. I attend to the physicality of the narrative, and to the way in which memory resides in the body, thus creating an embodied text. I examine current models of rape recovery, and the terms used by organizations, practitioners, and authors of rape narratives …
A Comparative Study Of Knowledge Of Pain Management In Certified And Non-Certified Oncology Nurses, Sherrie A. Lalande
A Comparative Study Of Knowledge Of Pain Management In Certified And Non-Certified Oncology Nurses, Sherrie A. Lalande
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over 1.4 million people are diagnosed with cancer annually. Of those people, 70-90% experience some form of pain. Numerous efforts have been made to educate nurses in the management of pain, yet 30-50% of cancer patients report that their pain is poorly managed. It is not clear whether nurses who obtain certification in Oncology are better equipped to manage this patient population regarding their pain issues. This study compared the knowledge of Oncology Certified Nurses (OCN) and Non-Certified Oncology Nurses (NCON) regarding pain management.
The sample of 41 oncology nurses included 19 who were certified in oncology and 22 who …
Ecological, Behavioral, And Curricular Interventions To Prevent Student Problem Behavior: An Approach To Implementing Effective Practices, Lindsey M. Merritt
Ecological, Behavioral, And Curricular Interventions To Prevent Student Problem Behavior: An Approach To Implementing Effective Practices, Lindsey M. Merritt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While classroom management has been a highly researched topic in Applied Behavior Analysis, there are few empirically validated methods to effectively disseminate classroom techniques into school settings. There are three main classroom management areas that exist in the literature. These are: a) ecological factors, b) behavior principles, and c) curricular modifications. These three areas have been researched independently and in combination to find best classroom management practices. Although these areas are highly researched, dissemination of these materials into public and private classrooms has fallen far behind. However, researchers are finding specific variables that positively influence the success of programs in …
Foraging Decisions Of Nocturnal Mice Under Direct And Indirect Cues Of Predation Risk, Robbin G. Capers
Foraging Decisions Of Nocturnal Mice Under Direct And Indirect Cues Of Predation Risk, Robbin G. Capers
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The perception of increased predation risk by nocturnal mice and other small mammals has been shown to reduce activity levels, particularly in foraging effort. Various cues of predation risk have been used in previous studies, but few have assessed the potential interactions between different types of cues. I conducted field, laboratory, and enclosure experiments using predator scents, artificial light, and microhabitat variables to determine the effects of direct and indirect cues of predation risk on foraging behavior in wild nocturnal mice. Experimental foraging trays served as artificial resource patches, and giving-up densities were measured in order to test for foraging …
