Effects Of Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift, Sarah Casey
Effects Of Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift, Sarah Casey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous literature has demonstrated that supplemental magnesium may have a prophylactic effect on noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). The purpose of this study was to replicate the findings of a previous investigation concerning the beneficial effects of supplemental magnesium on TTS in humans. Forty participants with normal hearing were divided into two groups, experimental and control. The experimental group received a single, 150 mg dose of supplemental magnesium and the control group received a placebo. After an hour in a quiet environment, all participants were exposed to a narrowband noise centered at 2000 Hz and presented at 105 dB SPL. …
Effects Of Supplemental Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift: Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Jenifer Leonard
Effects Of Supplemental Magnesium On Temporary Threshold Shift: Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions, Jenifer Leonard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have shown that supplemental magnesium administered prior to exposure to noise has an alleviating effect on temporary threshold shift (TTS). These studies have only used audiometric thresholds to demonstrate changes in the auditory system. However, to help determine the effects on outer hair cells (OHCs), a more sensitive measure should be used. The purpose of this study was to determine if supplemental magnesium administration prior to noise exposure has a beneficial effect on acoustic overexposure using a double-blind research design. This was determined by measuring distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) to determine any changes in cochlear OHC function. …
Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
Bioterrorism Syndromic Surveillance: A Dual-Use Approach With Direct Application To The Detection Of Infectious Disease Outbreaks, Kristin Broome Uhde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The threat of bioterrorism forces the public health infrastructure to focus attention on overall issues related to challenges posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. There is a crucial need to strengthen existing surveillance systems and to validate real-time approaches to surveillance that can provide timely alerts of epidemics whether they occur naturally or through a bioterrorism attack. The purpose of this study is to implement and evaluate a bioterrorism syndromic surveillance system called BioDefend™, to determine if the system could detect a potential epidemic/bioterrorism attack within 24-36 hours, more rapidly than it would be identified by routine health surveillance. …
On The Indemonstrability Of The Principle Of Contradiction, Elisabeta Sarca
On The Indemonstrability Of The Principle Of Contradiction, Elisabeta Sarca
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I examine three models of justification for the epistemic authority of the principle of contradiction. Aristotle has deemed the principle "that the same attribute cannot at the same time belong and not belong to the same subject and in the same respect" the most certain and most prior of all principles, both in the order of nature and in the order of knowledge, and as such it is indemonstrable. The principle of contradiction is involved in any act of rational discourse, and to deny it would be to reduce ourselves to a vegetative state, being incapable of …
Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George
Flat Chests And Crossed Eyes: Scrutinizing Minor Bodily Stigmas Through The Lens Of Cosmetic Surgery, Joan Ann George
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
If cosmetic surgery has become the cultural lens through which Americans look at issues of beauty and ugliness (Haiken 1997), then minor bodily stigma is the personal lens through which we scrutinize our bodies and self-diagnose our own flaws in the first place (Ellis 1998). In this dissertation, I interrogated the stories of eight women who struggled with two specific minor bodily stigmas--strabismus (crossed eyes) and micromastia (small breasts). Cosmetic surgery presents a potential "cure" for both of these conditions, however, as some of my interviewees could testify, the results are unpredictable. While some women reported being grateful that they …

The Clinical group was comprised of 18 A/H, 87 D/S, and 18 Comorbid children with both problems.
The Clinical group had significantly higher scores …
Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging Of Prostate Histopathology, Daniel Celestino Fernandez
Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopic Imaging Of Prostate Histopathology, Daniel Celestino Fernandez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Vibrational spectroscopic imaging techniques have emerged as powerful methods of obtaining sensitive spatially resolved molecular information from microscopic samples. The data obtained from such techniques reflect the intrinsic molecular chemistry of the sample and in particular yield a wealth of information regarding functional groups which comprise the majority of important molecules found in cells and tissue. These spectroscopic imaging techniques also have the advantage of acquisition of large numbers of spectral measurements which allow statistical analysis of spectral features which are characteristic of the normal histological state as well as different pathologic disease states. Databases of large numbers of samples …
Hearing Evaluation In Infants: An Update For Pediatricians, Janet E. Sullivan
Hearing Evaluation In Infants: An Update For Pediatricians, Janet E. Sullivan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper provides an overview of developmental timetables relevant to hearing and of current pediatric audiological techniques and practices. The first sections summarize structural and functional development of the auditory pathway and the development of primary auditory processing. These developmental sequences appear to follow similar paths in humans and animals. Speech and music perception involve more complex processing and are strongly influenced by experience. Hearing disorders affect the perception of complex sounds in a variety of ways, depending on the site(s) of lesions. Early onset hearing impairment, including conductive loss from chronic otitis media, can seriously impede language development.

Population Structure Of The Gopher Tortise (Gopherus Polyphemus) In Florida, Using Microsatellites, Tonia S. Schwartz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) population sizes have drastically declined in the past 100 years. Much of this decline has been attributed to past human predation, to habitat loss from human development, and potentially to the recently discovered upper respiratory tract disease. An understanding of the genetic structure among populations is critical for the long-term success of relocation and other management strategies. This research focuses on the development of a suite of genetic markers and the answers they provided to questions concerning present day population genetics and its use in management. In addition, this study provides inference on historical …

Count Or Pointcount: Is Percent Octocoral Cover An Adequate Proxy For Octocoral Abundance?, Matthew J. Lybolt
Count Or Pointcount: Is Percent Octocoral Cover An Adequate Proxy For Octocoral Abundance?, Matthew J. Lybolt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Florida Keys Coral Reef Monitoring Project (CRMP) began video transect sampling in 1996 and has continuously monitored 107 Florida Keys stations through 2002. The video was downward pointing and produced images from which planar projection data were calculated to determine percent cover of living benthic organisms. An absence of data assessing correlation between octocoral percent cover and octocoral abundance motivated a study to compare octocoral percent cover with abundance data acquired from the same video transects. The methods employed to extract octocoral abundance data from videotape were validated. Temporal changes in octocoral abundance, size and taxonomic group were determined …

Dwellness: A Radical Notion Of Wilderness, Martin J. Wortman
Dwellness: A Radical Notion Of Wilderness, Martin J. Wortman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The contemporary concept of wilderness, which is central to environmental theory and activism, is both a help and a hindrance to government policy and to popular environmental beliefs. The Judeo-Christian religious tradition and Locke's property theory provides much of the western cultural and historical basis of humans' environmental attitudes that basically engender exploitation. I argue that a more precise interpretation of Genesis and of Locke reveals that both sources actually promote environmental stewardship while decrying ecological abuse. Next I analyze the history and shortcomings of various wilderness concepts. These shortcomings are all forms of an exclusionist mentality and result in …

In the present study, detailed language background, language proficiency information, and individual language samples were collected and the speech stimuli were presented in a variety of quiet, noisy, and reverberant listening environments.
The effects of noise and reverberation on the perception of American English monosyllabic words was examined for two …
Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick
Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the connections between Arne Naess's Deep Ecology and Martin Heidegger's Phenomenology. The latter provides a philosophical basis for the former. Martin Heidegger's critique of traditional metaphysics and his call for an "event" ontology that is deeper than the traditional substance ontology opens a philosophical space in which a different conception of what it is to be emerges. Heidegger's view of humans also provides a basis for the wider and deeper conception of self Arne Naess seeks: one that gets rid of the presupposition that human beings are isolated subjects embedded in a framework of objects distinct from …
Informed Consent: Its Origin, Purpose, Problems, And Limits, Nancy M. Kettle
Informed Consent: Its Origin, Purpose, Problems, And Limits, Nancy M. Kettle
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The doctrine of informed consent, defined as respect for autonomy, is the tool used to govern the relationship between physicians and patients. Its framework relies on rights and duties that mark these relationships. The main purpose of informed consent is to promote human rights and dignity. Some researchers claim that informed consent has successfully replaced patients' historical predispositions to accept physicians' advice without much explicit resistance.
Although the doctrine of informed consent promotes ideals worth pursuing, a successful implementation of these ideals in practice has yet to occur. What has happened in practice is that attorneys, physicians, and hospital administrators …
The Effects Of Animated Textual Instruction On Learners' Written Production Of German Modal Verb Sentences, Elizabeth A. Caplan
The Effects Of Animated Textual Instruction On Learners' Written Production Of German Modal Verb Sentences, Elizabeth A. Caplan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the effects of animation for a technology-assisted German grammar presentation on modal verbs. The premise was that many intangible concepts of dynamic grammar involve syntactic components that possess visuo–spatial characteristics. It was further speculated that these characteristics could be more effectively represented by animated versus static instructional presentations.
The supposition that animation would lend pedagogical advantage was supported by dual coding theory (Paivio, 1971, 1990), which posits two functionally separate representational systems, the verbal and the nonverbal, with dynamic mental imagery residing solely in the nonverbal system. The strength of dually coded information is that it is …
