From Airport To Spaceport: Designing For An Aerospace Revolution, Paula Selvidge
From Airport To Spaceport: Designing For An Aerospace Revolution, Paula Selvidge
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
"Airports will shape business location and urban development in the 21st century as much as highways did in the 20th century, railroads in the 19th and seaports in the 18th" - John D. Kasarda, Ph.D. Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina http://www.aerotropolis.com/author.html
I say, spaceports will shape the urban development of the 21st century, more than airports, bringing about an aerospace revolution. Just as new technologies triggered the global revolutions of the past, so the invention of reusable spacecraft will revolutionize transportation.
The invention of such spacecraft suggests the need for a different kind of transportation hub: a spaceport. …
Local Environmental Perceptions And Cognitive And Affective Learning In A Rural, Andean Community In Mollepata, Peru, Luisella Mazzone De Angelis
Local Environmental Perceptions And Cognitive And Affective Learning In A Rural, Andean Community In Mollepata, Peru, Luisella Mazzone De Angelis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the linkages between environmental field trips and cognitive and affective gains in two groups of homogenous elementary-aged students in Mollepata, Peru. One group participated in an environmental field trip to a local, non-profit farm (Aprodes) to explore watershed and agricultural issues. The second group received the same content within the classroom setting. The research also examines the environmental perceptions of local residents via semi-formal open-ended interviews to assess their environmental awareness and their willingness to receive environmental education services from an outside organization.
Data were collected both quantitatively and qualitatively via pre and post tests containing science …
Differential Decomposition Patterns Of Human Remains In Variable Environments Of The Midwest, Melissa A. Pope
Differential Decomposition Patterns Of Human Remains In Variable Environments Of The Midwest, Melissa A. Pope
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Where do people die alone when they remain undiscovered for extended periods of time? Estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) is critical to reconstructing the events surrounding a person's death and this is an area in which forensic anthropologists have played a leading role. This thesis applied an anthropological framework that takes a comprehensive approach to analyzing the demography of unaccompanied deaths, the relationships and timing of decomposition in multiple depositional contexts, and created a model for the prediction of accumulated degree days (ADD) for bodies within enclosures.
While there have been extensive experimental and case study reviews on decomposition …
The Female Colonizer And Othered Woman In Isak Dinesen's Out Of Africa, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, Tayeb Salih's Season Of Migration To The North, And Paule Marshall's The Chosen Place, The Timeless People, Lindsay L. Sloan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The central issue of this thesis is the complicated relationship between the colonized individual and the constitutive as well as emblematic female colonizer in Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa, Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea, Tayeb Salih's Season of Migration to the North, and Paule Marshall's The Chosen Place, The Timeless People. Each of these novels displays colonization by a female (or females) and relates back to historical colonialism, but each characterizes the relationship between the oppressors and oppressed differently. Dinesen's and Rhys's works stem from historical colonization in which European colonizers conquered and ruled other territories; …
Functional Connectivity And Responses To Chemoreceptor Stimulation Of Medullary Ventrolateral Respiratory Column Neurons, Mackenzie M. Ott
Functional Connectivity And Responses To Chemoreceptor Stimulation Of Medullary Ventrolateral Respiratory Column Neurons, Mackenzie M. Ott
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ventrolateral medullary neurons have important roles in cardiorespiratory coordination. A rostral extension of the ventral respiratory column (RVRC), including the retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN), has neurons responsive to local perturbations of CO2 / pH. Respiratory-modulated firing patterns of RVRC neurons are attributed to influences of more caudal (CVRC) neurons. These circuits remain poorly understood. This study addressed the hypothesis that both local interactions and influences from the CVRC shape rostral neuron discharge patterns and responses. Spike trains from 294 rostral and 490 caudal neurons were recorded with multi-electrode arrays along with phrenic nerve activity in 14 decerebrate, vagotomized cats. Overall, 214 …
Unamuno's Concept Of The Tragic, Ernesto O. Hernandez
Unamuno's Concept Of The Tragic, Ernesto O. Hernandez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses in presenting Miguel de Unamuno’s concept of the tragic. Historically this concept has suffered various changes of meaning and application. If successful the project shall provide the distinct connotation, features, and characteristics that Unamuno attributes to the tragic. His special treatment of the tragic harnesses a way for the will to become aware of its existential condition. This awakening of consciousness evokes an arousal of dichotomies that the will must confront. Faith against reason, religion against science, heart against intellect, are amongst these conflicting predicaments. The will’s constant struggle between these opposing forces constitutes for Unamuno the …
Comparing The Effectiveness Of Behavioral Contracts That Use Function Based Reinforcers Versus Highly Preferred Items For Attention Maintained Behaviors, Dánica M. Diáz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Behavioral contracts were used to reduce the socially inappropriate and stigmatizing behaviors of adult men diagnosed with an intellectual disability. All three participants were residing in an intensive residential habilitation facility and receiving 24 hour supports due to the intensity of their problem behaviors. A multiple baseline across subjects with a series of reversals within the intervention phase was used to compare and evaluate the effectiveness of two types of behavioral contracts: one based on the function of the behavior and the other based on highly preferred items. Brief functional analyses were conducted to determine the function of the participants' …
Life In The Florida Everglades: Bioarchaeology Of The Miami One Site, Cristina Echazabal
Life In The Florida Everglades: Bioarchaeology Of The Miami One Site, Cristina Echazabal
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The bioarchaeology of prehistoric south Florida has been an area of archaeological interest for the last century because of the interplay between ancient populations and the unique environment of the Everglades. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pathology, demography and mortuary practice of the ancient Southeast Florida aboriginal population at Miami One to assess the similarity of Miami One to other south Florida populations during the prehistoric period. The Miami One site (8DA11) is one of many related sites located along the shore of the Miami River. It was continuously occupied from the Late Archaic (ca.1000 B.C.) …
Empty Streets In The Capital Of Modernity: Formation Of Lieux De Mémoire In Parisian Street Photography From Daguerre To Atget, Sabrina Lynn Hughes
Empty Streets In The Capital Of Modernity: Formation Of Lieux De Mémoire In Parisian Street Photography From Daguerre To Atget, Sabrina Lynn Hughes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study proposes the existence of lieux de mémoire in the photographs of Eugene Atget (1857-1927). My framework is based on historian Pierre Nora's definition: a lieu de mémoire is an object or idea which has become a symbolic stand-in for a community's memorial heritage. I suggest that Atget's photographs of the streets of old Paris, in concert with an empty-street aesthetic function as lieux de mémoire for their primary audience, antiquarians and professional archivists who specialized in old Paris.
According to Nora's structure, identification of a lieu de mémoire requires first the establishment of a historical tradition. In the …
Effects Of Ozone On Blood Components, Daniela Sloan
Effects Of Ozone On Blood Components, Daniela Sloan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies on the medical use of ozone therapies show a very diverse array of results, from ozone reducing the amount of HIV virus in the blood, to no effect, to causing the death of several patients due to pulmonary embolism and infections. However, ozone therapies are widely used in Europe and considered medically safe. In the U.S., doctors in 28 states use ozone therapies.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of medical grade ozone at varying concentrations used in ozone therapies. These were achieved by evaluating the C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, total reduced and …
Descartes' Bête Machine, The Leibnizian Correction And Religious Influence, John Voelpel
Descartes' Bête Machine, The Leibnizian Correction And Religious Influence, John Voelpel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
René Descartes’ 1637 “bête machine” characterization of nonhuman animals has assisted in the strengthening of the Genesis 1:26 and 1: 28 disparate categorization of nonhuman animals and human animals. That characterization appeared in Descartes’ first important published writing, the Discourse on the Method, and can be summarized as including the ideas that nonhuman animals are like machines; do not have thoughts, reason or souls like human animals; and thus, cannot be categorized with humans; and, as a result, do not experience pain or certain other feelings. This characterization has impeded the primary objective of environmental ethics - the extension of …
Immune Redistribution To Skin In Wild And Domesticated Songbirds, Joshua Ryan Kuhlman
Immune Redistribution To Skin In Wild And Domesticated Songbirds, Joshua Ryan Kuhlman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Implantation of dental sponges under the skin of lab rodents has been used to evaluate whether acute stress enhances leukocyte infiltration to a surgical site. First, I replicated this technique in house sparrows to test whether transient stressors cause similar immunoredistribution (i.e., movement of immune cells out of circulation and to the periphery) in a wild animal. As placement into captivity alone may serve as a stressor to wild animals, I compared sponge infiltration over different periods of captivity. Second, I compared how domestication affects immunoredistribution by comparing results of wild sparrows to domesticated zebra finches. Zebra finches were chosen …

Use Of Model Compounds To Study Potential Removal Of Pharmaceuticals Using Octolig®, Wen-Shan Chang
Use Of Model Compounds To Study Potential Removal Of Pharmaceuticals Using Octolig®, Wen-Shan Chang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The existence of pharmaceuticals in the environment has some adverse effects, and may pose threat to the organisms in the environment. The possibility of removing certain pharmaceuticals from wastewater was tested using Octolig®, a commercially available material with polyethyldiamine moieties covalently attached to high-surface area silica gel. Selected drug models were subjected to column chromatography in efforts to effect removal by means of ion encapsulation, the effectiveness of which would depend upon having appropriate anionic functional groups. The experimental results suggested that the model compounds, Rose Bengal, Eosin Y, Erythrosine , ZPS, and Lissamine Green B were successfully encapsulated by …
Anuran And Tree Community Structure Of Cypress Domes In Tampa, Florida, Relative To Time Since Incorporation Within The Urban Landscape, Christopher Haggerty
Anuran And Tree Community Structure Of Cypress Domes In Tampa, Florida, Relative To Time Since Incorporation Within The Urban Landscape, Christopher Haggerty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wetlands in densely urbanized landscapes display altered physical, chemical, and biological features; however, long term trends in these are poorly known. The purpose of this study was to determine if biological, physical, and chemical changes in isolated cypress domes are related to time since incorporation within an urban landscape. Sixteen cypress domes in Tampa, Florida were placed into four decadal age groups based on construction date of residential homes within 200 m of wetland edge, with multiples in each age group: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and rural sites as regional controls. Each site was visited monthly from July 2008 until …
Do You Have A Permit For That? Exposing The Pseudo-Public Space And Exploring Alternative Means Of Urban Occupation, Adam Barbosa
Do You Have A Permit For That? Exposing The Pseudo-Public Space And Exploring Alternative Means Of Urban Occupation, Adam Barbosa
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In his 1964 work "One Dimensional Man" Herbert Marcuse describes what he believes to be the de-evolution of industrialized society into the single minded pursuit of commerce. Decades later his hypothesis seems even closer to the truth, as much of our social interaction is now based in spaces that are designed to promote consumption. These spaces are in fact privately owned lots masquerading as public space so as to satiate the populace's desire for "public" interaction without sacrificing their effectiveness as places of commerce. The migration of social interaction into these pseudo-public spaces has also further marginalized the city's remaining …

Lithic Technology And Obsidian Exchange Networks In Bronze Age Sardinia, Italy (Ca. 1600-850 B.C.), Kyle P. Freund
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Sardinian Bronze Age (Nuragic period) and the factors which created and maintained an island-wide identity as seen through the presence of its distinctive nuraghi have received considerable attention; however the amount of research directly related to the stone tools of the era has been relatively limited despite the wealth of knowledge it is capable of yielding. This thesis hopes to contribute to Sardinian archaeology through the study of ancient technology, specifically obsidian lithic technology, by combining typological information with source data gleaned from the use of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). These data are integrated with statistical analyses breaking down …

A Wheelchair-Mounted Robotic Arm (WMRA) was designed to aid people with limited or no upper-limb usage to accomplish activities of daily living (ADLs). The primary objective of this research was to enhance the performance of the WMRA by improving the communication protocols and functions between the hardware and software used for its control.
Previously, the control algorithm of the robotic arm was tested in simulation and in the physical arm. These implementations required a combination of Matlab and C++ language and introduced some software instability under Windows operating system. To improve the performance of the WMRA, the programs for hardware …
Alien Encounters And The Alien/Human Dichotomy In Stanley Kubrick‘S 2001: A Space Odyssey And Andrei Tarkovsky‘S Solaris, Keith Cavedo
Alien Encounters And The Alien/Human Dichotomy In Stanley Kubrick‘S 2001: A Space Odyssey And Andrei Tarkovsky‘S Solaris, Keith Cavedo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The alien encounter has long been a defining and popular subject of science fiction cinema. However, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris (1972) are interrogative, complex, and distinct artistic accomplishments that stand apart from and above the conventional science fiction film. 2001 and Solaris not only represent but complicate the alien/human dichotomy; in the end, they destabilize the dichotomy and even suggest a radical synthesis of the dichotomous elements. 2001 and Solaris further emphasize epistemological and specifically anthropocentric limitations when it comes to understanding the alien or attempting to make sense of the alien encounter. …
Implicit Affect And Alcohol Outcome Expectancies, John M. Ray
Implicit Affect And Alcohol Outcome Expectancies, John M. Ray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Expectancy theory provides a useful framework within which to examine the link between cognitive representations of anticipated alcohol related outcomes and affective processes that ought to shape behavior at the level of implicit, or automatic, processing. The role of affect in alcohol expectancies is an important one as it reflects the approach-avoid contingency associated with reward learning presumed to underlie addictive processes. This study examined the relationship between affect and expectancy operation by using suboptimally presented alcohol related cues to prime affectively congruent evaluations of otherwise unrelated targets. Hypotheses predicted that drinkers who reported higher positive and arousing expectancies for …
Bird Communities Of Isolated Cypress Wetlands Along An Urban Gradient In Hillsborough County, Florida, Nathaniel L. Goddard
Bird Communities Of Isolated Cypress Wetlands Along An Urban Gradient In Hillsborough County, Florida, Nathaniel L. Goddard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Migratory bird communities are sensitive to landscape alteration. Urban development significantly impacts bird communities on breeding grounds, as well as en-route during migration. One current theory is that Neotropical migratory birds are not limited by breeding or wintering habitat constraints but by food and habitat availability along major migration routes. The eastern flyway is the route taken by neotropical land-birds through eastern North America that follows coastal areas denoted by intense urban development. Coastal areas funnel birds to major departure points along the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the western coast of Florida.
Birds were monitored for …
Characterization Of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 Transcript Expression In B Cells, Tracy Sherwood
Characterization Of Cannabinoid Receptor 2 Transcript Expression In B Cells, Tracy Sherwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors have been shown to play important roles in immune regulation particularly as modulators of anti-inflammatory cytokines and antibody production. The predominant cannabinoid receptor involved in this immune regulation is cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), which is robustly expressed in B cells. Utilizing a combination of bioinformatics, 5' RACE, real time RT-qPCR, and reporter assays, we showed that human B cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) expressed one CB2 transcript while mouse B cells from spleen express three CB2 transcripts. Alignment of the sequenced B cell RACE products to either the mouse or human …
Manifestations Of Hidden Curriculum In A Community College Online Opticianry Program: An Ecological Approach, Barry Hubbard
Manifestations Of Hidden Curriculum In A Community College Online Opticianry Program: An Ecological Approach, Barry Hubbard
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Understanding the influential factors at work within an online learning environment is a growing area of interest. Hidden or implicit expectations, skill sets, knowledge, and social process can help or hinder student achievement, belief systems, and persistence. This qualitative study investigated how hidden curricular issues transpired in an online learning environment's institutional and organization systems using an ecological paradigm. A phenomenological approach rooted in a case study context was used to explore the experiences and perceptions of a group of students, faculty, and administrators involved with an online academic program (opticianry) at a community college. Interviews, non-participant observation, and a …
Phenomenology Of Home, Lidiya Angelova
Phenomenology Of Home, Lidiya Angelova
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this Master's Thesis project is to investigate the meaning of home through the bodily experience and psychological perception of space.
An inherent ambiguity to the word, as it fails to translate in languages other than those of the Germanic group, causes confusion in defining what home is. In English the word home suggests a deeper understanding and attachment to the surrounding environment, a sort of fusing of the spatial, time and material elements into a single intense experience of being.
In languages that do not contain the word the notion of home is expressed in poetry through …
Architecture As Canvas, Monika Blazenovic
Architecture As Canvas, Monika Blazenovic
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cities are increasingly becoming vessels of consumption, while various opportunities for production of space and public expression are taken away from the city's inhabitants. New architectural interventions often disregard a site's previously developed character and further aid in wiping away memories closely related to a city's cultural past. Banja Luka, the second largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has been an important cultural center, even through years of unrest. Within the city's main plaza stands an unfinished concrete structure (Fig. 3), built with pre-war conceptions of a hotel. The structure's location within the city of Banja Luka has provided for …
Women And Architecture: Re-Making Shelter Through Woven Tectonics, Kirsten Lee Dahlquist
Women And Architecture: Re-Making Shelter Through Woven Tectonics, Kirsten Lee Dahlquist
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Weaving and architecture, conceived simultaneously with cave paintings, are two ancient forms of craft used to enclose space and provide shelter harmoniously with nature. In its basic composition, a useable textile is the interlacing of two members, warp and weft, at right angles to create structure and surface respectively. Textile artist Anni Albers of the Bauhaus attributes the organization of weaving to the skills of an ancient goddess. Her understanding of prehistoric cultures further links women closer to the overall creation of structure, though perceived as a masculine endeavor. Consequently, early advancements in architecture, the structural organization of shelter, are …
A Comparative Study Of The Plants Used For Medicinal Purposes By The Creek And Seminoles Tribes, Kimberly Hutton
A Comparative Study Of The Plants Used For Medicinal Purposes By The Creek And Seminoles Tribes, Kimberly Hutton
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies in Native American ethnobotany on the shared use of medicinal and cultural plants between communities fail to clearly reveal if these shared uses are part of changing culture or remain a stabilizing connection between old and new tribes. During the late 1700's to early 1800's, various factions of the Creek tribes of Georgia migrated into Florida, forming a new tribe called the Seminoles. This event provides the unique opportunity to study the changing cultural and medicinal uses of plants by a new tribe in a new geographic location, revealing if cultural purposes were passed from one group to …
Differentiation Of Labor-Related Activity By Means Of Musculoskeletal Markers, Annette Doying
Differentiation Of Labor-Related Activity By Means Of Musculoskeletal Markers, Annette Doying
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study tests whether musculoskeletal markers are attributable to occupational categories. It is hypothesized that individuals over the age of 30 years with a lifetime occupation as a laborer will demonstrate a significantly different pattern of activity markers from individuals in the white collar classifications. A sample of n=69 from the Maxwell Museum's Documented Skeletal Collection are investigated.
Upper and lower extremities were scored for MSM type (robusticity, stress lesions, and ossification exostoses) and severity (grades 0 - 3) following Hawkey and Merbs (1995) visual reference system. Enclosure, Transformation, Emergence: Space And The Construction Of Gender Roles In The Novels Of Charlotte Brontë, Michelle Dawn Lattanzio
Enclosure, Transformation, Emergence: Space And The Construction Of Gender Roles In The Novels Of Charlotte Brontë, Michelle Dawn Lattanzio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
I am interested in the construction and meaning of space in Charlotte Brontë 's novels, and more specifically the idea of enclosure, in abstract and concrete terms. In a concrete sense, I wish to investigate the physical spaces the women in Charlotte Brontë 's novels inhabit: their homes, gardens, workplaces, clothing, and their bodies. In an abstract sense, I wish to investigate the cultural, psychic, gender, and linguistic spaces they inhabit: the cultural images and conventions women are enclosed within, the psychic space of the mind, and the narrative spaces they inhabit (and create).

Feral Cats And The People Who Care For Them, Loretta Sue Humphrey
Feral Cats And The People Who Care For Them, Loretta Sue Humphrey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Sociologists have described the characteristics of individuals who become involved in social movements, their motivations for becoming involved, and the methods used to recruit participants. One group that has been underrepresented in the existing literature is feral cat caretakers. The purpose of this study is to examine the traits of this group, information which would be valuable to groups dedicated to educating the public about the plight of feral cats, groups which offer information and resources to caretakers, individuals wishing to network with other feral cat caretakers, and policy makers in need of knowing what options exist to deal with …
