Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Quality changes of squid ( Loligo vulgaris) during the storage at different temperatures were determined. The squid packed on straphore plates wrapping by strech film were stored at +20 °C and +4 °C . During the storage sensory, pH, moisture, weight loss, Total Volatil Basic Nitrogen ( TVB-N ), Trimethylamine Nitrogen ( TMA-N ) analyses were done. The shelf life of squid stored at different temperatures was found to be 1 day at +20 °C and 4 days +4 °C.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this research, a total of 97 Lactobacillus were isolated from 10 different sausage and sosis samples obtained from different markets. Identification results showed that 39 (41.1%) isolates belong to the species L. plantarum. Amount of lactic acid and H 2 O 2 produced for the strains were 0.61-0.88% and 1.80-3.45 µg/ml respectively. For qualitative determination, Triple Sugar iron (TSi) Agar medium was used for H 2 S production by the strains. Inhibition activity of bacteriocins and/or bacteriocin-like substances of the L. plantarumstrains against some food contaminants and pathogen bacteria ( E. coli, B. subtilis, coag. (+) and coag. Cutaneous Basophil Hypersensitivity Reaction In Immunomodulated Broiler Chicks, Uçkun Sai̇t Uçan, Yahya Kuyucuoğlu, E. Özlem Kuyucuoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A skin test to assess cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH) was evaluated in the interdigital skin of chickens grouped according to age. A total of 45 broiler Shaver hybrid chicks were used. Cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity was determined in the interdigital skin of 10- and 30- day-old chicks by a single intradermal injection of phytohemagglutinin-P (200 µg). In order to induce immunosuppersion, dexamethason dosed 3mg/kg body weight was injected IM for 3 days; to stimulate the immune system of the animals, levamisole was applied at 3 mg/kg body weight in the drinking water for 3 days. The effect of immunomodulation on the …

Comparasion Of Pharmacokinetic Profiles Of Some Antimicrobial Agents In Plasma And Lymphfluids, Muammer Elmas, Bünyami̇n Traş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Some pharmacokinetic parameters and concentrations of four antimicrobial agents in plasma and lymph fluids were compared for determination of penetration into peripheral tissues. Eighteen healthy, adult sheep (Turk Merino x Hampshire cross, 18-24 month, weighing 32-37 kg) were used. For collection of lymph samples, the efferent vessel of NI. cervicalis superficialis sinister was cannulated with a polyethylene catheter. All antimicrobial agents were administered intramuscularly at single recommended doses (Chloramphenicol 30 mg/kg b.wt., Enrofloxacin 2.5 mg/kg b. wt., Sulphadoxine-trimethoprim 16 mg/kg b.wt.). Subsequently, blood and lymph samples were concurrently obtained at 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 24 hr postinjection. Concentrations …

Using The Pseudoperoxidase Staining Method In The Polyacrylamid Gel Isoelectric Focusingtechnique For Determining The Origin Of Meat In Sausages, Özge Özgen Arun, Muammer Uğur

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to determine the origin of the meat used in heat processed sausages. For this purpose, sausages prepared from pure beef and horse meat and sausages prepared with different mixture rates of these meats, were cooked in a smoking oven at 75°C for 15 minutes. Proteins of extracts from these heat-processed sausages were separated by the isoelectric focusing technique. Only myoglobin bands of these gels prepared by this technique, were stained by the pseudoperoxidase staining method. Species differentiation was easily performed with sausages made from pure beef and horsemeat. Similarly determination of these two species in …

Investigation Of Three Different Lactation Models In Milk Yields Of Holstein Cows, Mehmet Nurullah Orman, Okan Ertuğrul

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The purpose of this study was to determine the best lactation curve. Data were collected from the dairy cattle breeding unit at Ceylanpinar State Farm. Three different lactation curve models (Wood, Schaeffer, Glasbey) were applied to all data. The values of the determination coefficients of three lactation curve models were estimated at 70.62-79.47%. Some negative estimated values were obtained during the estimation of parameters. These results were restricted by the hypothesis and were tested. All restrictions were accepted. Total actual and mature equivalent (ME, 2x3057) milk yields were estimated. Differences between the actual values of lactation milk yield, and the …

The Genetic And Phenotypic Correlations Between Milk And Reproductive Traits In Holstein Cows, Mahi̇ye Özçeli̇k, İsmet Doğan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the genetic and phenotypic correlations between milk production traits (milk yield, lactation duration, dry period) and reproductive traits (the number of inseminations per conception, service period, calving interval and gestation period) in Holstein Cows were investigated. The data relating to milk and reproductive traits in the period of 1985-1992 of a Holstein herd at the Bala State Farm was used. The genetic correlations were generally higher than phenotypic correlations between traits investigated in this study. In milk production traits, the phenotypic correlations between the milk yield and the lactation duration (0.41) and the dry period (-0.14) were …

In this study, 80 carp specimens (Cyprinus carpio) (16 fish from each station) of ages between 1-2 were caught at five stations in the upper Sakarya river basin the four seasons between October 1995 and October 1996. The structural changes of gill, liver and spleen tissue of the carp were examined. The gills of fishes which live in aquatic habitat exhibit tissue lesions caused by water pollutants, because they are in direct contact with their environment. In the results of this study, it was found at secondary lamellae fused together, and the gills are the most affected organs. Other histopathological …

The results showed that M. rosenbergii and P. elegans larvae were unable to consume the nematodes. The larvae of these species fed Artemia for 8 days, displayed normal development and high survival (over 90%), but, similar to the starved controls. The larvae grown on the nematodes had all died by the 8th day of the experiments. P. indicus larvae fed nematodes from stage Protozoea 3 …

Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇ Jan 1999

Exact Test For Investigation Of Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Bahar Çitak, Tahsi̇n Kesi̇ci̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The use of exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests to control the hypothesis that a sample represents the population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are explained and compared with each other. These tests were applied for the loci with two, three and four alleles. The reliability of these tests depends on the sample size. The results showed that the exact and \chi^2 goodness-of-fit tests provided almost the same results if the sample size is considerably large. The exact test is, however, more reliable than the \chi^2 goodness-of-fit test when the sample size is small.
