Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the effect of ellagic acid on the performance, egg quality, digestibility, cecal microflora, serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, and biochemical parameters in quails reared under normal conditions and at high environmental temperatures was investigated. The animals (n = 240; 5-weeks old) reared at 2 environmental temperatures [thermoneutral (TN) and heat stress (HS)] and in 4 diet groups containing different ellagic acid doses (0, 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) were randomly assigned to 8 groups according to the 2 × 4 factorial design. Feed intake, egg weight, and egg production were higher (P < 0.001) and feed conversion (P < 0.01) was better in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. Egg (P < 0.01) and shell weights (P < 0.001) were higher in the TN groups compared to the HS groups. The effect of ellagic acid supplementation on shell weight was statistically significant in the TN and HS groups (P < 0.05). The effects of environmental temperature and the supplementation of ellagic acid on digestibility of dry matter (P < 0.05), ether extract (P < 0.01), and crude protein (P < 0.01) were statistically significant in the TN and HS groups. Supplementation of ellagic acid reduced the total coliform bacteria count (P < 0.01) and increased the total lactic acid bacteria count (P < 0.001) in the cecum. Serum MDA levels increased with heat stress (P < 0.001) and decreased with the supplementation of ellagic acid (P < 0.001). The effect of environmental temperature on serum glucose (P < 0.001), cholesterol (P < 0.05), total protein (P < 0.05), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (P < 0.001), sodium (P < 0.05), and magnesium was significant. In conclusion, the supplementation of ellagic acid decreased oxidative stress and total coliform bacteria count and improved the feed conversion and egg quality in quails under heat stress. Moreover, ellagic acid increased the digestibility of nutrients and had a positive effect on lactic acid bacteria. It was observed in this study that these beneficial effects of ellagic acid increased with an increasing dose, and 400 mg/kg was the most effective dose.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Vanadium is one of the essential trace elements for mammals, which has important functions in the metabolism of carbohydrates. There is limited data about the effects of vanadium (IV) chloride supplementation on appetite-related hormones in literature. Our target was to analyse the impacts of vanadium supplementation on appetite-related hormone (leptin, nesfatin-1 and apelin) levels in rats with experimentally induced diabetes. Twenty eight male Sprague-Dawley albino rats were used in this study. After formation of diabetes, 0.3 mg/mL of vanadium was added to drinking water of rats for four weeks. A substantial increment was found in serum glucose (p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), HOMA-IR (p < 0.01), and leptin (p < 0.001) levels and a significant decrease in insulin, apelin and nesfatin-1 concentrations in diabetic rats. Moreover, blood glucose, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and leptin levels decreased in diabetic + vanadium group, but nesfatin-1 (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), apelin (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), and insulin concentrations were found higher compared with the diabetic group. As a result of this study, vanadium has increased the levels of circulating nesfatin-1 and apelin levels in diabetic rats while decreasing blood glucose and leptin concentrations. But further studies are required to determine the blood glucose lowering effects of vanadium and its relationship with appetite related hormones in diabet.

High Level Of Fluctuating Asymmetry In The Byzantine Dogs From The Theodosius Harbor,Istanbul, Turkey, Abu B. Siddiq, Pere M Pares Casanova, Öğül Emre Öncü, Hakan Kar, Vedat Onar
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Asymmetry, the abnormality of an organism or a part of it from its perfect symmetry, is represented by three different categories: fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry attributes to random developmental variation of a morphological character, whereas directional asymmetry attributes one of the body sides to be more prominent than the other. Antisymmetry appears whenever one body side of a biological body shows greater morphological appearance than the other. Since more environmental stress often produces greater effect of fluctuating asymmetry, it can be a good indicator of physiological stress in the morphological characteristic of a biological being. Applying, …

The aim of this study was to analyse semen quality parameters of fresh-extended porcine semen imported from Denmark through prolonged importing regulations and transport and to analyse fertility performance in sows inseminated four days post semen collection. Semen was analysed immediately upon the arrival (4 days post collection) using computer-assisted sperm analyses (CASA), cytomorphology and flow cytometry, and sows were inseminated later the same day. The mean sperm concentration was 1718.09 ± 100.11 × 106 , with average of 1193.40 ± 90.58 × 106 motile cells (69%) and 756.04 ± 70.57 × 106 progressive motile spermatozoa (43.58%) in a dose, …

The hypothesis was that the level of sexual experience and reproductive status of ewes affect the time that rams dedicate to courtship. Ewes (n = 40) were separated into four groups according to their reproductive status: maiden, empty, under continuous and restricted suckling ewes. Rams (n = 8) were separated into four groups according to their sexual experience: experienced-I and -II and inexperienced-I and -II. Each group of ewes was exposed at the same time to a different group of rams at 10-12 h intervals for 22 days, an injection of prostaglandin was given to ewes at the end of …

The accurate estrus detection is essential for successful reproduction. Many scientists reported the importance of pheromones for accurate detection of estrus. In addition, the choice of the appropriate device and the appropriate extraction solvent is important for obtaining quickly and more estrus-specific pheromones. In this study, sweat samples were collected in heat cows and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gas chromatography mass spectrometry were evaluated using three different solvents (diethyl ether, dichloromethane, and hexane) for extraction. VOCs with different numbers and different ratios were identified in all three extraction solvents. As the solvent, 9 compounds were detected in diethyl …
